McNair would be a great signing. Young, British, can play CB or base of midfield i.e. genuine Whelan replacement.

In the 24 hour news industry enough shit gets talked about to fill a very large thing and they've got the whole world of political and economic affairs to cover. 24 hour football news is just the worst. People in football collectively say about 3 things a year worth listening to. Awful.

So he's said we could work on defending in training, and we could do with strengthening CB, which EVERYONE has said for MONTHS, and suddenly he's a heretic. This isn't because of what he said, this is because it's Marc Wilson that has said it. Huth wouldn't have gotten this grief for being open. The problem isn't the veracity (or not) of what he said, it's that he said it publicly. If you have a criticism of your manager you take that up in private, you don't make it on Twitter. I think Marc is probably upset that he has recovered from injury, he's been training hard ("training stats don't lie") and yet the weekend before the season starts he finds himself in Rhyl rather than with the 1st team squad. He probably feels unloved, and by making that known publicly he puts potential employers on alert that a transfer away from the club may be a possibility. Doing so in this way - rather than a formal transfer request - he keeps his loyalty bonus but it also challenges Hughes to either sell him or mollify him by giving him more first team football and changing his training methods. Hughes seems to have the same opinion of Wilson that the average Stoke fan does, so with that in mind it would appear that his time with Stoke is close to an end. Probably the best outcome for all parties.

He's never been right since he smashed his teeth.
I think he'll see out his contract here and retire. He's got nothing left to achieve. If he really wants to carry on he should be looking at Australia or the States, somewhere nice and easy.

I have no idea what MH was thinking with this guy... He has problems with CB's. He did buy Vincent Kompany.

If we had the attitude of signing players for 30million paying 130k a week, we wouldn't be rolling in it. I'm not saying we should, I'm saying we could. There is a direct correlation between success and money spent (bar the odd exception now and again) How do you think we got promoted in the first place? Why stop there then, Pugs? Let's get Cristiano and Messi in.

Strange link if true. Only seems to be on the Mirror's transfer blog, rather than the paper as such. Seems to have been an elite prospect at Schalke 3-4 years ago, attracting £15m+ bids when that still meant something! But his last 4 seasons have been positively Jack Wilshere-esque. Moved to Leverkusen last summer for a cut-price £5m and ran into more injury problems. It'd be a surprise if Leverkusen would let him go 1 yr into a 5-yr deal if he was fit. Their owners are massively rich. Although they do seem to have a couple of other good centre-backs - in a German international ,Tah , who was at the Euros, another Turkish centre-back Toprak who seems to be valued at 20m euros - and are in negotiations for another centre-half, Dragovic of Kiev - for 15m euros+ - which does kind of make you think something would be possible? Hell of an injury record though - and also seems to be reputed to be as mad as a box of frogs. Good post. If Stoke want to pay massive amounts of money to someone for sitting in a hydrotherapy pool all day, I'll hand my notice in tomorrow. Avoid.

We can play with Allen and Imbula in midfield. Whelan is only a midfield enforcer by virtue of his tactically-given role within the team, it's not as if he's exceptionally strong, quick or good at tackling. Allen got more interceptions than any other midfielder at the Euros and though less stocky than Glenn it's not as if he's made of paper.

My magnum opus:
Ain't it just like the red and white to play tricks when you're tryin' to start a riot ? Is it just against us, or do you always sit there so quiet? And Louise has her hands on the reins, tempting you to defy it We snicker "Is that all you've got?" Right now we can just hear you cough We heard your lot plays soft But there's nothing really nothing to turn off Just Louise and the Potters so entwined And these visions of Joe Allen that conquer my mind.
In the empty lot where the ladies play blindman's bluff with the key chain And the all-night girls they whisper of escapades out on the D-train We can hear the night watchman click his flashlight Ask himself if it's him or them that's really insane Louise she's all right he's gettin' near She's delicate and seems like the mirror But she just makes it all too concise and too clear That Joe Allen's not yet here The ghost of electricity howls in the bones of her face Where these visions of Joe Allen have now taken Marko's place.
Now, little Welsh boy, he takes his game so seriously He came to us from Liverpool, he likes to live dangerously And when bringing the name up He said it jsut smelled like piss to me He's sure got a lotta gall to be so calm on the ball Pinging long balls to them all while Peter's still tall Oh, how can I explain ? It's so hard to get on When these visions of Joe Allen they keep me up past the dawn.
Inside the museums, Infinity goes up on trial Voices echo this is what football must be like after a while But Jurgen Klopp musta had the nicotine blues You can tell by the way he smiles See the over-the-hill Frenchman freeze And the jelly-faced Italians all sneeze Hear the one with the bald head say, "Jeeze I can't find my knees." Oh, jewels and headphones hang from the head of Yaya too But these visions of Joe Allen, they make it all seem so cruel.
The pundit now speaks to the gambler who's pretending to care for him Saying, "Name me someone that's not a diver and I'll go out and say a prayer for him." But like Louise always says "Ya can't pay too much, can ya man?" As she, herself prepares for him And to her Dad what an honour we bestow We see Pulis' cage now corrode And the goals from the midfield now flow Our wingers, they now step to the road Everything's been returned which was owed And the back of the net now billows While my red and white heart explodes The Potters sing their sweet song Delilah to the rain And these visions of Joe Allen are now all that remain.

I think some of Martinez's more outlandish hyperbole has rubbed off on some of thrm 'For me Gareth Barry, is one of the best English players ever' Or how about 'I think there is not a better English player' - refering to Tom fucking Cleveley! Gone but left a trail of delusion behind him. To be fair, we've seen absolutely no evidence to prove otherwise.

Future England captain. Superb footballer who needs the right defensive coaching. For £50 million I'd want the finished article, not someone who needs the right coaching.

No better than what we have. We have enough thrust in the front 6 now. We need defenders that can shut down a front line.

£15m seems really cheap for Chadli. I know the prices across the board are insane but I reckon in a year or two Allen at £13m, Saido at £22m and Chadli at £15m, these will look like absolute bargains. They've all got years ahead of them, too.

A really weird link this. It's so left-field it has to have come from somewhere. But as others have stated - how could he possibly get a work permit? Perhaps we'd pick him up and loan him somewhere? Or perhaps we're betting that post-Brexit we won't need work permits.

Can someone who went explain to me in detail what system we played (first half in particular)? Hughes said afterwards that he'd experimented with a formation to use if we didn't have wingers. What were they trying?
