Ok I was at the game and thought it was shite. We looked toothless and not much effort went into that at all. It is embarrassing that we've lost in such a way but this is what a pre season is for, to find out what needs addressing, get the lads back up to pace etc etc. I sympathise with Leslie as he went with a completely different formation and got stick for it. This game meant nothing. Credit to all the Stoke fans, a cracking day out and I can't wait for Preston. Once we sign Sobhi and a few others everything will take shape. I personally hope that Burton do stay up as its a cracking day out. Go on Stoke

I'm not sure we need friendlies to highlight the areas we need to improve. It was shown up last season that we need a whole new spine of the team and a winger. Getting thrashed at mighty Burton hasn't changed anything. We still need it.

Putting it into perspective. Burton Albion. Think about it! Would you see manure getting beaten by them, anytime? Frigging no!

I gave up worrying about pre season results after beating liverpool 1-0 in 2000 came away the day thinking we were world beaters November that year we played them again in the league cup. result stoke 0 - liverpool 8 lesson learnt since that day freindles are nothing more than a work out . That's why I don't bother going frendlies anymore ..

I seem to recall a Manchester Utd team losing to a Championship team in a friendly in the fairly recent past. Lad named Goodfellow bagged a couple against a World Cup winning goalkeeper...

There are lots more questions than answers at the moment but personally I think that result is a good thing and shows we need quality in certain positions.
Haugard is not, and will never be, good enough.
Wooly can play alongside a dominant, proper defender but we can't base a defence on him. If Ryan is in trouble we desperately need a genuine replacement.
We're lacking a dominant presence in midfield and Imbula doesn't seem to be that type. Like Wooly I'd be happy with him alongside a more aggressive and strong centre midfielder.
We need a goal scorer. If that's Diouf, great, but if either the management don't fancy him or he's not up to it , we have to get someone in.
So......
1. Centre Back - first team ready 2. Centre Mid - first team ready or at least close 4. Striker - ideally first team ready but I'd take a youngster who can play a bit part this season and hopefully step up next season. 5. Reserve GK - young up and comer or aging top level material. But he has to be capable of playing 90 minutes without gifting a goal.
Easy.

My concern is that the game yesterday was pretty much the same as the end of last season, in that not much effort went in to the game, approach, tactics and the managers ability to do anything about it.
I have no inside knowledge but I think the owners financial commitment for 2016 was Imbula and perhaps the odd younger player with very little financial outgoing this pre season or a loan perhaps.
What does bug me though is that Scholes is about appealing as a wet fart to me so heavens knows what agents and players think of him.

I had the mis fortune of going to Crewe v Wolves on Friday, I have said it before and on Fridays showing I would take Ben Garratt from Crewe and loan him back for a couple of seasons! Still very young, A brilliant shot stopper and a bit of time with Andy Quy to work on his arial dominance etc and he will be a brilliant keeper!

I don't think results matter so much in friendlies but you do look for some indication about how things might go .
A few points from me
Formation , Don't know if this is a plan but if it is we will need to replace Pieters who is a better defender than wing back , also it did not seem to enable us to increase our attacking threat . We still wasted far too much time passing the ball only to end up back in the same place
Good Things Jack returning and looking commanding Johnson back and looks fit Young lad in midfield looked steady
Worries for me Hoped Bojan might shine at least a little against Burton but it didn't happen , similarly Imbula was pretty poor and once again kicked the ball away when he didn't get a decision . Joselu !!!! Our back up young players looked well out of their depth against Burton squad players so not a lot of quality to be seen yesterday there . Hopefully we will improve each game but surely we need three or four major signings with some pace and someone who can score and a strong centre half essential

No but we did and went on to win the league that season in fact I think we lost all pre season friendlies that pre season. Although I agree it's not great to lose at Burton but in the scheme of things it means absolutely nothing.

I'm not worried about losing a friendly, it's not like it's not happened before. I'm more concerned that the areas in the team that need addressing from last season seem to be still present, and precious little recruitment has been made so far to improve them. And we still have Frank Spencer in goal.

Results are not important in pre season, however we were very very poor players like Imbula etc. should be standing out even if they are not fully committed, yesterday they didn't that is worrying, the keeper situation is pathetic the lad is not good enough and looks like he never will be, Joselu how much did we pay for him and Wolfy is well I don't have to say more.

We need at least four new players IMHO. There are several I would get shut of. Ireland being the first one, but the broken leg has put paid to that. If Shawcross doesn't get back to his best, I dread to think about us defensively. Not knicker wetting, realistic in my view. Get some money spent Stoke, and get them in before the season starts! As our kid says, we are shitting money!

Think peoples worry is , every year under MH we seem to have had a crap start to the season, the friendlies don't mean anything, but they do indicate that the players are either taking the games easy or don't know what Mark wants from them. A slow start may well catch up with us one of these seasons.

Not sure about Hughes' attitude to friendlies, he didn't seem too chuffed doing the post match i/v. Does seem to be the coaching philosophy to play football as opposed to pure fitness work though. Interesting short interview on the SCFC official site with Damian Roden '..our intention in pre season is to introduce the ball as soon as possible- fitness then follows naturally from this.' Some good stuff about analysing the cause of injuries and learning from them, treating all injuries as avoidable. It does seem they've changed things this preseason, hopefully in an attempt to avoid a sluggish start. There was some indication that last years Singapore trip was a bit of a drain. America should be more convenient and clement. I wonder whether there was some running up mountains in Austria?

It's definitely a pretty unique way of doing it in this country it seems.

Bit of a head scratcher though, doesn't seem to be the product you'd expect from such an emphasis on the training ground. Shape, movement, routines, shooting. etc.

I thought the behaviour of some of our fans yesterday was frankly ridiculous. Leaving in their droves and some even booing the team of kids, who had looked far more positive attacking-wise than the strong first half lineup, at full time. Mama Sidibe got more support sat in the stands than most of our team.
A bloke walked past me around the 60 minute mark and announced that it was a waste of a tenner. Frankly, anyone expecting a pre-season friendly to be an entertaining and exciting game of football is a fucking idiot.
A lot of our first team players got some good game time and no one got injured. That's a good result in a friendly.

Shawcross, Arnie, shaqiri, Whelan, Walters, diouf, crouch, given, Ireland and affelay all missing and unavailable for our first pre season friendly of the summer with those available having returned from Austria the night before.
Some of you lot seriously need to have a look at yourselves.
The only concern relating to yesterdays game was that shawcross was unavailable for selection due to another back injury, however minor.
