Macc has suddenly turned in to one of my favourite towns to visit.
Given that I'd rather inject parasitic worms into my eyelids than visit Hanley (day or night), the mrs and I will now have an 'awayday' and jump on a train somewhere. And Macc's a great little pub crawl with a nice town centre. 15 minutes on the train and £6 return.
Even Derby (which you'd say is a comparable city with here) has a city centre that puts Hanley to shame.
Hanley needs a major overhaul and more effort made to control the street drinking/drug problem, because now you're met with pissheads holding cans of Special Brew yelling at each other and all the trash have made the new bus station their home.
There's a broken window above the bus station entrance that's not been fixed in months.

To me it seems like the whole city has just been left to die for the past few decades, a bit like Chernobyl

Can get a single to Manchester for 3 quid, and back for the same price.
Not just for chain stores, but plenty of independent shops and cafes, and proper pubs - the things that Hanley lacks the most.

That bus station is a disgrace; having to catch buses every day for work is a depressing experience when all the louts are factored in
The only consolation is a lot of the riffraff wont see there 40th birthdays
I have tremendous sympathy for the homeless but the element that choose to pursue violence & intimidation should just be euthanized.
Hanley is kind of like Blackpool
Then you've got Stoke town centre - which is the equivalent of Rhyl!

I'd rather go for a beer in Stoke than Rhyl any day of the week.

I think with Liverpool it's definitely a case of knowing the places to go. Went to some right shit holes and some decent boozers/bars. Will do my research next time.

I feel it's a shame I need to venture elsewhere but have been waiting 20 odd years for Hanley to get to a basic level.
It ain't going to happen and life is short.

If I want to get a bus to Newcastle from outside the Tesco, Trent Vale, it costs me £2
But I can go to Manc & back for only £6.

Nottingham is always worth a visit whether during the day, or for its night life. Even Newcastle is declining. There's a much bigger reason for this than just cosmetic or lack of variety.

I don't think Hanley is the only place that's fallen apart. Newcastle-Under-Lyme is looking decidedly sad these days. I remember dozens of good clothes shops and a decent town centre that I would regularly visit on my lunch breaks. Nowadays, there's not much really worth visiting down there. Derelict shops and a few run-down kebab houses. Unfortunately, this is one of the reasons why London and the North are so detached. The UK government have invested millions in London, but only a few metropolitan areas in the north have experienced any kind of funding and no surprise, they're a lot nicer than they used to be. Liverpool, Manchester, Newcastle and even Birmingham are preferable to Stoke-on-Trent. Sad times

If you don't live in Manchester or London you should probably move to Manchester or London. Everywhere else is untenable in post industrial Britain. Managed decline, they call it.

Sheffield is a lovely place to visit. A direct train into the city centre, a tram to take you to the huge Meadowhall shopping centre on the outside of the city, and plenty of small independent eateries, cafe and bars. Hanley is little Mecca at times and is fucking filthy.

Until we get rid of this 6 towns bollocks this city will go nowhere ....also ignored by labour as its a given and ignored by the Tories as they've no chance of being elected
Plough 90% of the money into Hanley and the results will follow
But in all honesty is there another set of natives who run their city down like the folk who slaughter Stoke On Trent ?
The people also have an awful lot to answer too in respect of how this great city gets perceived ....hang your heads

Bears linking this thread to an earlier one: oatcakefanzine.proboards.com/thread/251750/hive-potteries-centreI got roundly criticised for my opinion but it seems I'm not the only one. The comments on Newcastle are spot on too. It can no longer afford to be up its own arse, once their new civic centre is built they need to act swiftly and transform the old civic/Sainsbury's site otherwise it's just another North Staffs bomb site. That side the redevelopment of the old Zanzibar looks impressive externally (given its lengthy decline), if it's as good internally they'll need to make an awful lot of money back.

Birmingham, Sheffield and even Manchester are all easy to get to via train, not expensive and infinatly better experiences than Hanley. I have not and will not go there unless I really have to.

The biggest difference with our city centre and others is ours doesn't have a train station. No train station = no tourism = no money. Might sound controversial but scrap Hanley as the city centre, make Stoke the city centre, invest and advertise, all outsiders think Stoke is the city centre as it is. All these other cities everyone has mentioned have also mentioned going on train.

It will never be Manchester or Liverpool or even Nottingham or Derby, it is 6 small towns. You need to somehow find pleasure in the diversity of the 6 different towns or accept it will never quite be for you if you need that big city vibe. I no longer live in Stoke but it warms my heart whenever I go back.

The shit thing is, Hanley did have a station until it fell foul of the Beeching report. It should never have gone. It used to be where the Kwikfit garage is next to The Quality Hotel. yes I understand that the loop line wasn't viable at the time, but hindsight is a wonderful thing. They should have at least kept the line running from Stoke into Hanley, and then possibly terminate at Cobridge, where they could have converted the rest of the loopline into a tramway. Instead our dear council decided to spunk it away on projects such as Unity House, the desecration of our beloved industries, and feathering their own filthy rich nests (Yes you Mr Van de Laarschot) This city will ALWAYS fail.

The station is still there, it's under the quality hotel car park, there for the time team to dig up in 100 years time. A disgrace by Beeching and the council. In fact all the rail closures were very short sighted given the money spent on reintroducing most of the lost lines.

If they had spent more money and effort in saving 'The knotty' they would'nt have had to quickly scratch around for money to complete the A500, which resulted in a poor thought-out project which after completion proved to be a disaster, in turn 30 years later resulted in the massively expensive 'Pathfinder' project. I'd love to find the twat who coined that name. Fucking Pathfinder! Really? No doubt some cunt in London, who has never visited Stoke

I haven't been into Hanley for years, its an horrid shit hole of a place both in the day and at night. It's lifeless, dirty, dull and full of really fat ugly people, mainly with a can of beer in their hand.
I went into Wilmslow this morning with the family, nice breakfast, few drinks and stopped for a meal on the way back.
Once a month we go to either Birmingham or Manchester but this Saturday we're going to London £37 return with Virgin, its a no brainier.
Under no circumstances will I visit Hanley.

Last time I tried going up Hanley duck was about 5 years back and I thought it was so shit I've never wanted to go back.
Decent band at the Sugarmill, but no prosecco or prawn sarnies, which was quite frankly disgusting.
