Thankfully the mandatory minimum two-division gap between us has been restored, but just think how fuckin close we were to the indignity of being on the same league table as that lot next year. A chastening thought.

Another meh player. As was harwood-bellis for us. Both average championship players. I think THB is going to get their POTS, he’s been a real standout apparently

I’m not quite sure about “congratulations” to the club but there’s absolutely nothing wrong with celebrating our survival.
Long run, not a lot has changed, the direction of the club is still highly questionable and I don’t particularly expect next season to be a whole lot better (although I do have slightly more hope than I did a few weeks ago).
But in context, an away win to fully secure our status in the division is absolutely a source of relief, happiness, and yes, celebration. These things are not contradictory.

I saw a bit of an old game the other day with some eye-watering tackles going in, and I realised I’d completely forgotten that the done thing back then was to *not* show that you were hurt, under any circumstances. Blokes were getting absolutely scythed and smashed all over the place, and immediately springing to their feet and jogging straight off, often clearly trying to disguise a limp.
Just struck me how that bit of unspoken protocol among players has completely reversed. Once - not actually very long ago - it was a sign of weakness to show you’d been hurt after a “reducer”. Now you have to squeal and writhe like a stuck pig at the slightest brush.

Presumably it's going to be Burger, comfortably. With Bae Junho a very strong second. No idea who else would be remotely in the mix. Third place will be a very interesting call. Define “very interesting”

Remembered this thread and thought people might like to know the Guardian have started a "quick cryptic" series, where they give special instructions at the top to help figure out the clues. Good for beginners but still good fun if you're a more experienced solver www.theguardian.com/crosswords/quick-cryptic/1

I reckon we'll put Saints to the sword anyway. They'll get mullered 5-0 by Lester tonight which won't be much use to them, give up on the autos and will wilt under the white heat of a rejuvenated Stoke onslaught on Sat. Another 0-3 to the Potters. I knew it

That's an ambitious one! Not particularly likely to happen any time soon.. Stoke have played in Buenos Aires. Against Boca in 1964. Could happen in the utterly ludicrous 2030 World Cup. I mean the choice of venues is the height of stupidity even for FIFA Oh yeah that's true. For some reason I was thinking that had already happened only six years premature..

This light being shone on who refs support is interesting. Fascinating that Madley was moved from a Birmingham game a couple of weeks ago due to his Huddersfield links - but then allowed to ref other relegation 6-pointers. Surely when the league has splintered into mini-leagues, refs have got to moved, if only for appearances, from matches directly impacting them. www.birminghammail.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/key-birmingham-city-v-cardiff-28969709The referee who will take charge of Birmingham City's crucial fixture with Cardiff City on Wednesday night has changed, it has been confirmed by the EFL. The experienced Bobby Madley had initially been appointed as the man who'd oversee proceedings at St Andrew's tonight, but now the man in the middle will be Sam Allison. Madley, who has plentiful Premier League and European experience, is known to be a Huddersfield Town supporter Having originally been appointed by the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) who distribute referees across all games in the Premier League and EFL, Madley has since been moved off Blues. Now you've got a big Notts County fan reffing crucial Luton games. Seems odd Where do you stop with that though? Any fixture could potentially affect a team a ref supposedly supports. Also, are we meant to assume that just because someone supports Notts County that they HATE Forest so much that they'll bring their own profession into disrepute by being biased towards another team in a game that may or may not affect them? It could just as well be the other way round and they'd want them to do well (good for the city ). Or - by far most likely - they won't allow it to influence them. If refs have a strong allegiance to one particular team, fair enough, I guess declare it and they don't ref them. Other than that we should accept referees are professionals and are not going to allow some possible connected permutation affect their real-time reffing of a match.

Got to remember there are 4 teams below us before you even talk about the other two going past us. We’re safe as houses Basically all 5 teams below us (forget Huddersfield) have to outperform us, to varying degrees, over two games. It's not going to happen. That said there's a decent chance it could still go down to the last game which I'd really rather avoid

In absolutely no way. It's eye watering for a relegated championship GK. This board has a permanent erection for overpaying though, so I'm not too surprised I'm in a minority on this one. A million quid hasn't been eye-watering for anyone since about 1994

Ffs can you be sensible.. it’s a moving, low-angle shot of the action where you can’t even see the players in question at the point the ball is played - look at the proper wide shot of the pitch with the lines on the grass, he’s clearly not “miles onside”. All that clip shows is how deceptive a particular camera angle can be. It’s sad and it’s cruel for Cov, and there’s a debate to be had about whether this is what the rule was meant for and how VAR should be applied, but unfortunately the bloke was offside. Take your first paragraph. Reverse it and your absolutely right. They use dodgy angles, never precisely when the ball is kicked. The lines are like my 3 year old has drew them with a marker pen. It's a fucking shambles and I guarantee we are in the midst of widespread corruption. Its fucking baffling people have one ounce of defense for it. That Scotland goal above is a prime example of screwing a lower team to the benefit of a larger one. On no planet would Spain have had that goal disallowed. Until its done by an independent body with over 100s of cameras proving factually its off. They can fuck right off None of this has any actual basis in evidence though, they're just flimsy accusations. It *is* done by an independent body and they *do* use multiple cameras and angles - the semi-automated version coming in next year monitors every player at something like 27 points on their body and the ball has a sensor which sends a signal 500 times a second to monitor its movement. And for every decision favouring a big team there's one that goes against them - there was even one in the same bloody game the other day - VAR could easily have overturned the Coventry penalty but that's being glossed over in favour of the conspiracy, which apparently you can "guarantee" is afoot... I'm not a huge fan of it and there are serious questions about the way it's applied, but this isn't one of them

Absolutely miles onside. Both staggering and sickening. Also shows how dysfunctional and inaccurate those lines are that they draw from random angles and use to make decisions. How many other VAR offside goals have been legitimate? This has to be a nail in the coffin for the way it is currently operated. The whole thing has not been thought out at all. For VAR, they should be allowed to view footage once - if its not immediately clear there's been a balls up, the on field decision stands. So we're back to what someone decides over the actually lines that show if you're offside of not . He was just a bit offside so will let it ride or not. Good idea in principle but not every decision will be interpreted the same Is the rule that needs looking at No one has really come up with a reasonable solution over the offside or not rule we currently have Exactly, the only way VAR would be changed for offsides is if the authorities around the world suddenly said “oh sorry it’s not as accurate as we thought actually”. Which ain’t gonna happen. If the tech is there to make the right decision, it’s basically impossible to argue for disregarding it to introduce more subjectivity. On changing the offside law as a response to VAR, that’s also a non-starter because 99% of matches played don’t use it.

Spot on - it's a great fucking con to keep the big six up there or thereabouts - never mind the crayon thick lines on a poxy TV screen - what about the point of release from the forward pass - no-one ever challenges at exactly what point this was deemed to be effective - you'd need a 1000 FPS facility to get that perfectly right - anyhow its a load of bollcocks and as others have said it's ruining the game for a lot of us - offside was all about preventing "goal hanging" as we used to call it and being "level" was always onside and it was always meant to favour the attacking side when it was close......now it's just looking to deny for the sake of it - and it's still fucking subjective if they have to have half a dozen folk and 6 camera angles to pour over a decision for 4 minutes or whatever - just mental. Coventry (and more widely we - the great unwashed - were robbed yesterday and the so-called magic of the cup well and truly asphyxiated - they just had to keep the shit in it at any cost ......... Absolutely spot fucking on …….!!!!! I have very mixed feelings about VAR and I can see both sides… however one thing nobody has ever explained is how it supposedly benefits the big clubs, or even just attacking teams, as someone suggested earlier on. They’re just as likely to be on the wrong end of a marginal decision as benefit from one, I don’t understand what the argument is supposed to be
