Watched the game yesterday on ifollow as overseas with the Sohail Sahi and Mike Pejic as commentators.
Thank god I had the pictures to see what was going on because Sohail is talking completely irrelevant nonsense when the game is going on, start of second half for example as we surged down the right he’s banging on about a cake or something! How anyone listening on Radio Stoke has a clue or any impression of how the game is going I’m not sure. The difference in quality between him and Nigel Johnson is huge. Nigel might have made mistakes but you got the essence of the game and could live the ups and downs of the action.
With Sohail we get descriptions about anything and anything, that’s whenever he isn’t blowing smoke up Pej’s arse. The only thing we don’t get much of is a description of what is actually happening on the pitch!
Also how come he can’t even pronounce Boothen correctly? You’d have thought something as basic as that would be one thing he could get right.

I'm really warming to Sohail and after having been parachuted in from nowhere I think the feeling is becoming mutual.
Mild mannered, likeable and inquisitive as he is I think he is an excellent 'bounce' for our more opinionated experts and former players like Pejic and Whelan.
I think he does a job similar to that of Jonathan 'Aggers' Agnew on Test Match Special, like a soft spoken wind up man for everyone from Fred Trueman to Geoff Boycott to Glenn McGrath.
No point in trying to be 'Nige the 2nd', anyone attempting that would just crash and burn!

I’m not criticising his personality Gods, just that he’s meant to be describing the action to the people who can’t see it, and half the time he’s not doing that! If he was a TV commentator it would be ok. BM

Couldn't you just have added this to the existing gazillion page thread that disects and critiques every single utterance made by Radio Stoke personnel?

If I am not at the game I tune in to BBC Radio Stoke on the home WiFi and catch the 1 hour build up to the match and I get Praise and Grumble afterwards. But at exactly 3pm when the commentary would start the link to Radio Stoke cuts out and I get some generic match commentary, whatever is on national radio I think!

Some seem to think that a poxy local radio show should have the finest commentary in the world.
Just listen to sky commentary, they literally just say the name of the player and not what’s happening, granted it’s on tv so easier to follow.
Personally think he’s alright and comes across as a genuine decent guy wanting to improve, he also doesn’t seem to be a kiss arse!

I listened to an away match the other week and he described a Mr Kipling French fancy perfectly. He does know his cakes. Hopefully next season he will perfect his football. He has got better though and I’m positive on one of his first commentary's he said “ good pass from Burger to Mr Kipling”. He does get a bit too excited when the opposition have a good chance, I would prefer it if he shouted close the bugger down Stoke.
He is getting better though.

After Sohail stated ‘this famous old ground’, I could take no more and put the Plymouth commentary on, calm, professional, knowledgeable, impartial and described what was going on. Every thing Sohail is incapable of. He’s bloody awful.

I like him, all my knowledge of local towns and cities come from him describing things when there is a lul in play.
I’d rather his personality than some boring bar steward.

He’s improved a lot and is starting to come across as genuinely enthusiastic about Stoke City.
However, I do hope all the complainers about Nigel from last season are starting to realize what a brilliant commentator he was. So many wanted to get rid of him. Be careful what you wish for!

He’s crap. Goes on about the infrastructure of his favourite grounds; for most of the away commentary, chuck in a bit about cake or chocolate, a brief outline of his co commentator every 10 mins and then a bit about the game.

Good enough I suppose, but why then during the games I'm always thinking there has to be better out there. Not sure why they continue to bring Cranson in...might as well be mumbling in Greek.

Whether you like the commentary or not I guess next season when Sky take over IFollow and Sky bring their non descript merry men and women of commentators with them we’ll all be reminiscing of the radio commentary on the streams of recent years.
Give me Sohail over some no-body on a fast track Sky apprentice scheme who’s main interest is basketball.

I've just commented in the 'Vale' thread about this, but did anybody hear McGarry refer to Crewe fans leaving the ground early on Saturday as 'clearly not proper fans'? Imagine the outrage if Sohail came out with that one in one of his LCD induced diatribes

Sohail wouldn’t pretend to be the same for us. BM

I'm ambivalent on this Sohail chap - I can see he's trying (too hard perhaps?) to hone his craft for which I believe he has studied and been trained at Uni, and that's creditable but drives me mad when he tries to flower stuff out with excess verbiage and rhetoric when it's just not appropriate - obsessed with state of shorts (clean, muddied, grass stained??) and other odd observations - sometimes less is more fellah! From a parochial perspective it would be nice to have a local commentator (for local people ;-) who can genuinely embrace the "mental" as a supporter but that is probably an anachronism in this day and age where a degree of neutrality is deemed more professional (and more likely to see you plucked for national duties as some previous incumbents have I think, although names escape me....
The "Buthen end" drives me fucking nuts though - we need more "Centre Cirtles"....!!

I find him ok, but stop referring to the Bet 365 as ‘this famous old stadium’, Pej was better this week as he didn’t have too much to moan about (although he tried in the 1st half)……

He’s definitely improved over the season and really enjoyed his contribution to the podcast that has been knocking around.
I don’t know if he is a Stoke fan or not, but if he isn’t then he’s doing an excellent job of trying to be,if you get my drift. he’s bright and articulate and seems like a really nice bloke

I can't see the issue with him personally. Try listening to his commentary at the same time as watching the game and then think of the people at home in their back kitchen in Fegg Hayes, radio on, who are relying on him for their window on the world 3pm every Saturday. BM
