I've been reading Sir Stan's autobiography & he wrote about this issue.
Back in the 30's, 40's & possibly the 50's, players had to be playing consistently well for 2 seasons before even I mention of 'good' player was mentioned. Following on from that then maybe an England call up was due.
Stan said one wonder goal from a 19 year old nowadays & that's it! You've made it & you're in the England squad.
Players were also picked on current ability. I can't remember who it was, but a player was sold to a team in the 2nd division (Championship in today's football pyramid) and he still made the England squad.
I agree with Sir Stan 100%

"I'm just fed up of talking about the same old problems. The biggest problem is the Premier League. They have a product which they sell around the world which is entertaining but it's doing our players no good whatsoever.
This is a Premier league side which played in what is supposed to be the best league in the world. You're not telling me that all of those Uruguayan players will get in many teams in the world apart from Suarez.
We go on banging a drum about we've got this and we've got that. Do you know what makes the Premier League exciting? It's players like Luis Suarez, the foreign players. We hype all our players massively, as we always do."

I am afraid that I ceased having expectations of England years ago. Absolutely. I always expect the worst but hope for the best. I support England the way I supported Stoke in the first Premier League season.

I personally, living outside of stoke, have the benefit (if such a word can be used) of living amongst other fans than stokies/vale/manure fans. This means I've looked for sympathisers to the cause of Shawcross amongst a more neutral backing. Whilst a lot of my mates who I would consider 'real' football fans who actually know a thing or two about nogger all agree that Ryan should have had a seat on that plane over Smalling any day of the week, I find it alarming the number of people who don't. 'Shawcross? naah he's fuckin wank!' 'Shawcross? naah he's a leg breaking twat' 'Shawcross? who?' and it continues in the same vein. Some interesting comments at the bottom of this page www1.skysports.com/football/news/11701/9339869/ryan-shawcross-determined-to-force-his-way-back-into-the-england-squad

How do you know that top clubs haven't been in for Ryan? Alex Ferguson rated him highly. Maybe Ryan has been happy at Stoke and didn't see the need to move? So why did Ferguson sell him then Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has admitted some regret selling Stoke City captain Ryan Shawcross. Shawcross moved to the Potteries in January 2008 after failing to break into the United first team. Sir Alex said of the 23-year-old: "I keep saying to myself 'why did I sell him?' He’s a great lad and it’s unfortunate that he was here at a time when Craig Cathcart, Jonny Evans and Gerard Pique were showing great promise, and it was difficult to guarantee him a place in the first team. "But then, of course, Pique left, Cathcart got a few injuries and we decided to sell him to Blackpool, and only Jonny remained. So Ryan would probably have figured now had he stayed."

The father-in-law clocked Steino walking through the Wembley concourse so I took a photo of him next to mar lady. He was her favourite player.
I was also shedding a few tears when I saw the Stoke players lined up before kick-off. I bet Shawcross was proud as punch leading the lads out with the captains armband on.

Odemwingie jumping on the advertising boards has to be up there. How weird is it though that players do special celebrations - "I just scored a goal, excuse me while I do a backflip" i quite liked Wingie's as well and Charlie seems to have decided to copy him after his goal at the weekend. to be fair to acrobatic celebrations....i did always like KJ's liked Ethers at the semi final as well...he looked properly pumped up after he scored that, great bit of passion Who knew Danny Pugh could do the same as KJ? www.theguardian.com/football/2008/nov/12/carlingcup-stokecity
