A splendid film. It encapsulates the earthy unglamorous working mans club essence of 1970?s football clubs perfectly. Like many dramatisations, if you remember that it’s not the entire absolute truth a pleasant time is had. I was however struck by the dragging out of the tiresome cliche at the end that ‘Brian Clough is the best manager England never had’. That gets stated almost as fact yet nobody can know for sure whether he’d have been successful or not. My own view is that he wouldn’t have proved any more or less successful than Ron Greenwood who was appointed instead. It also stands out that while Bobby Robson became a national treasure, the man who actually did it… Sir Alf Ramsey, is so often overlooked. We know that he was the manager on July 30th 1966 but he is rarely discussed with affection. It’s a sad fact that the most successful England manager there’s ever been and ever will be..... seems to be way down the order when the England team is discussed. The notion of the best manager England never had gets more attention than the best manager England ever had… and Alf’s achievements deserves better than that.

Alf's achievement was very much "pre" the modern game though, you could also argue that Alf's techniques ushered in the modern era. However, one thing remains an undisputed fact - the game is a very different beastie these days.

I think Sheen's performance is brilliant, as is Tim Spall's. Spall even manages that most difficult of accents - a Nottingham one. Colm Meaney is a dead ringer for Revie as well.
The biggest let down is the players: they don't look anything like footballers. Surely the guy playing Bremner wasn't the only talented ginger actor? Did he have to have a paunch?

Charlie Drake had long since passed away, unfortunately. Maybe Mick Hucknall would have sufficed?

Bremner was lots of things, but podgy he wasn't.

Stephen Graham who played Bremner isn't even ginger, he is however easily in the top 5 english actors around at the moment.

The Street his performance in that episode of The Street is one of the best performances I've seen from anybody either on stage, tv or film....simply breathtaking! He was also brilliant in the episode of The Accused where he embarks on a relationship with cross dressing Sean Bean...who also puts in a stellar performance! The Street & The Accused are two of the finest dramas the BBC have produced in recent memory & yet it looks like neither will be revisited....yet they continue to churn out durge like Miranda!!
