Nobody has or will unless he has a poor run of form. I am a big fan but he really needs to improve on his assists. Last season just one assist and from a key midfield player that's not good enough. He has to match the much derided Joe Allen's last season's contribution as a bare minimum.

Jones ticks so many of Coates's boxes that it's unlikely Jones will go. He was cheap, British, favours British player above foreign, willing to work with fuck all budget....Jones is a Coates wet dream.Unless we are bottom 3 in December he is here for a good number of years, get used to mid table championship football for some time to come. It's probably a good thing Coates won't pull the trigger...his record of successful manager appointment is marginally better than Jones's win record.

Well posters on here have continuously suggested that; we are going to hammer someone sometime soon. we are just a couple of tweaks away from being a top 6 team Rome wasn't built in a day Jones needs 3/4/5/6/7/8 years to sort this mess out...patience You can clearly see signs of improvement We just need a bit of luck and the results will come Norwich lost the first 4/5/6/7? games last season and look what happened to them Nathan turned a failing Luton Town into Barcelona he will do it again here. Gregory and Hogan will score shitloads and terrorise defences
So how can I not believe?

Isn't it the manager's responsibility to get players to do 'the basics' right? Many of his team and his players are experienced pros not raw teenagers who presumably have been doing 'the basics' pretty well to have had a career at a high level. So the only conclusion to draw is the coaching isn't getting through and the tactics and formation doesn't suit these players. Buck stops with the gaffer Nathan.

'Other players take note' Please concede possession 33 times. Not much point in all that effort if you just end up giving the ball away. As for his crosses, if he actually could learn to look up at some point to see exactly where his forwards are that might work. His crossing method is head down and hit. People get carried away with his effort and passion but the bottom line is even at this level he is a poor footballer....christ how much longer is his contract?

Squad rotation is a bit old fashioned theses days even the top clubs rarely rotate players choosing to play their best xi as often as possible. Players are assessed for their endurance if games come quickly. As for us why go with a weaker team away to PNE? This team needs some consistency particularly in defence not changing every game. Players are surely not knackered 4 games into a season? There is an international break coming up soon and we now have very few players at that level so most can put their feet up.

I don't watch much premier league but I am in San D and my fav sports bar is run by a glory hunting Manu fan who does a free round if they win. Might be fun to watch a very good Wolves turn them over bollox to the free JD

it's about time football dragged itself into the 21st Century just like most other sports. Hopefully next to come will be respect for referees and no cheating. But whats not to like about VAR? You get to celebrate twice?

His work rate is certainly incredible, and he'd run through a brick wall for you, but he's simply not a very good footballer. It's the absolute basics like passing/crossing etc. that really let him down. He's not good enough. Yes just about sums him up. But we knew all this anyway. I guess it's a better option than Ward. I just hope if we have anyone currently doing the recruiting and scouting they can find a better option in January.

Good post. Another question is, what is Allen being asked to do? Surely if Jones had asked him to "sit" a la Whelan and he seems unwilling or incapable of doing it he would be dropped? What are his instructions? Same goes for previous managers. It’s a good question and one I’ve always wondered. If he could just go back to being the metronomic version that Brendan Rodgers got so misty eyed about he’d be much less of a problem for us. If my memory serves me right that's how he was at Euro 2016 and played well enough to be chosen in the team of the tournament partnering Kroos in a CDM 2 in a 4-2-3-1 formation. Hughes seemed to give him a more forward free roving role in midfield rather than play him how Rodgers did.

Villa went up and he needed a new home. Challenging again in the championship after doing it successfully the previous year seems a bit pointless, probably wanted a new challenge. I'm quite sure he could have joined any team in the league and been a good addition, bar the top few. He wanted a new challenge? Doesn't really sound like it given he only signed a 1 year deal does it? I'd say any player moving to Scottish football (which is harldy the most "challenging" of leagues for any professional footballer) for just 1 year signifies it will be the last year of his playing days. I just find it odd when we're trying to re-build/start from scratch with a squad, that anyone would think that someone who's nearly 36 and only willing to sign for a year would be in any way some kind of solution to our problems. Apart from Nathan Jones with Stephen Ward who he thinks slots in nicely in arguably one of our most important positions. But he could be here another year if he plays a few more games and gets his contract automatically extended.

From the way Rory read the team out, if it is a diamond, it'll be Woods sitting. Federici Edwards Collins CCV Lindsay McClean Woods Cousins Clucas Duffy Vokes Wow if Cousins is one of the midfield creators he has a chance to improve on his 1 assist in 100 games

Listening to his press conference raised him up a few notches in my eyes. As others have said it's refreshing to hear when a manager admits he got it wrong. The worry is that it's not the first time a sub decision has lost us points. I am nowhere near a tactical genius like Bayern but it was clear to me at the time it was the wrong substitution, not Duffy coming on but Woods going off and Allen dropping back into CDM. You don't have had to watch Allen many times to know he isn't disciplined enough and no surprise we lost our shape. It's great to admit a mistake as long as you don't repeat it. Keeping Allen on smacks a little of favouritism which I know many managers have but can be a weakness. Use you head Nathan not your heart on these calls.

The assist stats from last season for the main creators in midfield and wider men like McClean and Ince were absolutely awful and it's no surprise we drew so many blanks. I think Ince was the main provider with 7 and Etebo a simply dreadful 1 assist!! Hopefully we will see more than double figures from the tip of the diamond and Allen and Etebo simply have to do better. I am hoping if he continues with Woods at the base he has the passing ability to create. If Cousins is back in that position there is no chance. The last time he had an assist was......over 100 games ago. Ok OK I know he is a CDM but 100 games since an assist, holy shit!

I am hoping he doesn't make dumb ass substitutions that ultimately lost us the game. An inexperienced manager just has to learn from his mistakes and quickly.

I have to admit that I am feeling very deflated after yesterday's result but then again I would fully expect the players are also feeling low. That is the time when everyone concerned has to pull together. All my experience tells me that we have a competitive squad capable of beating any team in the Championship. Contrary to many on this site I do believe we are improving. My major concern is that we have conceded five goals in our first two games against not the best two teams in the league. As we struggle to score three goals it seems we are destined for trouble. I still have faith in Nathan Jones but I want him to get to grips with the defending first and foremost. The spectacular goal scored by Ince yesterday can win games but only if we keep clean sheets! You have got to be mentally strong to be a Stoke supporter nowadays! When are some going to realise that you cannot just keep sacking your manager. Why can’t you keep sacking your manager? If you appoint a succession of poor managers you have no choice. The trick is to appoint someone who is going to have an immediate and positive impact. It hasn't adversely affected Watford who have had 12 managers in 10 years and they have sacked some very decent ones. The current guy will go I am sure if they hit a bad patch

Massive improvement on QPR, obviously. And we would have won it 19 times out of 20. But I don't think you can dismiss the fact we were playing against a team that were in L1 last season, and are one of the most underfunded Championship teams of all-time that have been allowed to wither on the vine by their chairman - and who'll be in the bottom 5 or 6 in May. As one of the best funded teams in the league, we would have been expected to win the game and look to be a level above. That a 3-1 loss against a club in crisis, with the funds of Kidsgrove Athletic, was probably in the top 5 or 6 performances of the calendar year almost certainly says more about our year than yesterday's performance. I thought the Radio Stoke commentary went miles over the top about how good we were. I was more enthused by, for example, Villa under Rowett, Blackburn in April - or the home games against Sheff Utd and Norwich at the end of last season Very eruditely put grapey, I am unsure what posters actually mean by we are improving, is it improving from last week? If so it really couldn't have been much worse against QPR although some still found reasons to be optimistic. But the important question is it improvement on performances against Norwich and Sheff U last season because that really should be the measure. People are conveniently saying last season is irrelevant but it's not. People said give him a full pre-season to work his tactical magic and bring in his players. Well he's done that and yesterday against hugely weaker opposition than Norwich or Sheff U the performance was significantly worse than the back end of last season. He is still unsure of his best xi and he continues to make incredibly naive substitutions. Super tough 3 games coming up which I think we tell us whether this season, even at this early stage, we can compete with the best in this league.

I suggested only Butland as a change but I forgot about Etebo, he definitely needs to start. Maybe that would be an excuse to give Joe Allen a rest.

Under Rowett in the first half of the season he scored twice, watching Ward today, Jones's choice of replacement for Pieters, pathetic attempts at even getting near the target suggests without question that Dyche knows what he is doing when he evaluates a player and decided that Pieters was the better option. I am not putting Erik up there as a perfect solution for LB, merely pointing out how Jones fucked up with his LWB/LB option and made a very naive call....one of many The fact we are currently relying on an ageing pro and a converted winger just proves my point.

You’re Nathan Jones and you’re thinking about the Wigan game and the team you’re going to start, do you: A) start the side you’re going to play against Derby Or B) play the players that haven’t had much of a look in It’s a genuinely tough call. With where we are though he has to play what he thinks is his best side surely? I would start the same side as today tbh. The team performed well bar the last 15 mins but I think with that team we take the game to Wigan get a result and use that as momentum against Derby. I mean I would understand if he wanted to give starts to players like Verlinden and Campbell but I think we need some level of consistency. Same team for both games barring no injuries. Powell on the bench with Ince in behind Gregory and Hogan again. I agree it's early in the season and his chosen first xi clearly need as many games together as possible. Only change for me would be Butland. However I have a feeling he will go with the norm for cup games and rest players....wrong call in my opinion

6 much improved from last week and he picked the right two up front. But once again his inexperience and naivety showed in his dumb ass substitutions. I sincerely hope he is being critical of himself and learning from his mistakes otherwise he will never progress as a manager.

Perfect summary of him and what we saw today. There is a reason why he has never scored more than 10 goals at this level and we saw it today. Expect around 10 again this season. The concern for me is that a) For whatever reason last week Jones started with Afobe and Vokes...wtf! why wasn't Gregory started? and b) He looks by some distance our best striker. Maybe Hogan will come good and hit his Brentford form or Vokes turn into the player he was 6 years ago. Hate to piss on your chips but he scored twelve last season in the league and fourteen in total for Millwall. Agree with everything else though. OK I was relying on Wiki...not always a good idea which lists him as 10 in the league. I like him tidy player but not a composed goal scorer but looking at what we have he should be no 1 pick up front. Interesting that the Charlton lad scored from a similar range albeit an easier chance. For me hitting the post isn't unlucky it's poor finishing
