Hate the thought he recked our club and still manages to land another decent job. Gutted we are where we are now and his record goes un touched

With hindsight I think Hughes would have found the extra 4 points we needed to stay in the Premier League last season.
It would only have needed 2 of the draws in a very gentle run in to become victories.
But equally I can see why our board ultimately, and I'm sure against their initial intentions, caved in to the pressure.
The upshot is we're languishing in the Championship and Hughes is jerking himself off on the south coast.
Life is about choices and some will haunt you forever.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing. On reflection I think he would have got us the points having seen what happened. At the time was it the right thing to get rid.....absolutely. Unfortunately the board made a woefully poor choice in Lambert and compounded it by being too tight to sign a striker.

I actually like Hughes and overall respect the job he did for us.
But I don’t think for one second he’d have kept us up. The bloke had lost any semblance of a plot he had remaining.

I get that though but Hughes takes no responsibility now on what has happened. Lambert was a shocking appointment.. i agree but i hate him living it up in the prem.. i will always remeber the game before he got sacked and he said who else would have the job.. He really has taken the piss and now his record still says no relegation

Sacking Hughes was fine, sacking Hughes for Lambert was a joke
Like every other club in the world you have your new manager signed up before you sack the current one. You don’t then go scraping around looking for anyone to take it
I said it at the time and I firmly believe it, Hughes would have kept us up

If we'd have fucked him off in November like we should have, we'd have stayed up, even if the replacement would have been pigeon-brained Lambo.

The change from Hughes to Lambert was utterly bizarre, a moment of unadulterated insanity. Men in white coats time for those behind the 'decision'.

If Hughes continued, chances of Stoke to stay up was about 50% With Lambert chances were 0% With a decent manager it was going to be 70-80% especially other relegating teams were losing too many points too.
Sacking Hughes was good decision, a bit late but good, giving the job for Lambert was a shit decision.

Exactly the same cirqs compared to his QPR stint.. That's a concern to me coz they never recovered from his meddling.. Thats 2x relegations he's presided over but in his head & according to the records he has NO link to or responsibility for either.

Have you considered that LMH (OBE) might have wanted to move onwards and upwards?
Have you considered that SCFC might have said to him "Well now hold on a bit here Les, we are quite comfortable sitting mid table in the best League in the world".
Les replies that he wants more.....
So Les gets slapped down and plods on. Arnie spots what has happened here - and out comes the famous quote "Lack of ambition".
We have all seen what happened next.
LMH (OBE) is a very good manager. I'm sorry but people like PFL and GR are not even in his class.

I think it for one second. I do think, for one second, that he could have done a slightly better job than what Lambert did in those 12 or so piss easy games. If there was one speciality that Hughes had in the last two years it was labouring the odd 3 points out of terrible opposition, whereas Lambert tended to make draws of those games. In the final analysis I'm not sure it would have been preferable though because he'd still be our manager now.

The team had stopped playing. Whether stopped playing for Hughes or just stopped playing (which may be the point as they have never really started again), we were in absolute freefall.
It was too late by that point, I honestly don't think anyone would have kept us up. Lambert isn't responsible for Adam's Penalty miss (then slow follow-up) against Brighton, Jack's blunder against Leicester, poor late defence against West Ham and a couple of woeful misses from six yards against Watford, Bournemouth and Palace. A lot of points there are the responsibility of the players, but the group had lost any resemblance of team spirit and desire. Lambert actually did claw a little of that back.
There seems to be a concensus Hughes should have went at the end of 16/17, I was worried at the end of 15/16, even though we finished 9th...... In terms of quality that was the worst season of Premiership Football andin the second half of that season we started leaking easy goals.

You were worried when we finished 9th ridiculous Hughes should not have been sacked after Coventry. The only way he should have gone is they had a top quality ready replacement At the end of the season yes. Pulis kept us up by the skin of his teeth and then they got rid the right way to do things

I've seen a few say the (then) League Cup Semi-Final tie against Liverpool was a watershed date as well. That was 26 January 2016. You're entitled to say it's ridiculous, but I don't think it is.

History will judge Hughes’ tenure less harshly.
It was worrying what we became under him in the end, but when it came to pushing on from those 9th place finishes he should be judged by the players that the recruitment team failed to get him and not just the ones that they did.
Would we have got the 4 points extra we needed under Hughes? Didn't feel like it at the time but in hindsight probably. Ones things for sure I don’t see Southampton being anywhere near the bottom this season.
We have more important things to worry about anyway......

It was his replacement that baffles me still.

Results and playing aside
1.how did we become so full of poison and idleness in the dressing room? In hindsight Arnie was the first to call it so it must have started 18 months ago at least.
2. How have we ended up with the most mismatched squad imaginable, with significant and expensive personnel consistently put out to grass on loan.
1. For me is lack of discipline and line management caused by not being close enough or strong enough to deal with it or both.
2. Lack of due diligence in transfers. Manager, CEO and recruitment.
Only one of these has been replaced and we are still reaping the inheritance of the others. GR has a pretty shit and long rebuilding job on his hands. With hands tied, personnel with attitude, an unbalanced set of dead wood and a CEO/recruitment team still as incompetent as ever.
If he does it in one season it will be a miracle.

They aren't by the default of the money he has spent, but they are because of the huge mess he's inherited, and the amount of squad churn required IMO. There's no doubt that in some quarters, the size of the job has been hugely underestimated - some of that in the stands too. His hands are tied to some degree with the players he needs rid of before replacing also, those players we stand little to no chance of moving on and clearing the decks with.

The Stoke City Board sacked Mark Hughes and we are now in the Championship.
The Southampton Board appointed Mark Hughes and they are still in the PL.
Which club got it right?

His hands being tied suggests to me that there’s nothing he can do himself about the situation. I don’t agree with that. I agree he’s got a job on his hands, both with some of the dreck he needs to shift, and working with the nincompoops in the transfer team. But he should have the raw materials to work with even now to be able to get a reasonable tune out of this team. This isn’t a Sunderland level squad.
