That guy has hit the nail on the head with the primary failing Hughes had, in five years we *never* arrived at the starting blocks ready for a new season, I've no idea what he does but it clearly followed him to S'ton. As a "professional" manager it's criminal behaviour.

As a "professional" manager it's criminal behaviour. He always put it down to the way they work on fitness or something along those lines, building it throughout the season so they're stronger near the end of the season.

The season starts in October if Hughes is your manager. August and September is an extended pre-season, any points gained in this period are a bonus.
You’d think after the last couple of seasons with ourselves he would have approached things differently at Southampton but it looks like he’s still backing his slow start, strong finish philosophy.
It’s a very risky strategy, most managers would prefer to get as many points on the board as early as possibly, Hughes seems to like playing catch up.

"If you throw enough shit, eventually some will stick" I imagine Hughes has this motto engraved on a piece of nice mahogony, hung above every desk he sits at.

"Gabbi, Yoshi (our best defender) cannot make the bench (that has 4 midfielders on it" Classic Hughes overloading with midfielders

"I still don't understand why we paid a **** load of money for a reserve goal keeper when we already had two on the books and one on huge wages was unlikely to be going anywhere." More classic Hughes

It’s an absolutely idiotic strategy. A complete logic fail. Starting slowly makes sense if you’re running a marathon but not if you’re playing 38 different football matches over 9 months all of equal importance in terms of points. I’m not even convinced it was a strategy at all. I think they just neglected fitness work and the team got fit naturally as the season progressed.

Well it’s classic. Got his contract, and now time to get another red and white club in the shite! He probably still thinks he’s at stoke.
Clearly it’s not his fault. Clearly we are not seeing the games out.... they should have enough to remain in the Prem but it won’t be down to him or Bowen or his other clowns.

How do you explain a consistent run of best ever top flight finishes for Stoke City? Last season was a disaster but it's pretty obvious other forces were at work as well as him having a nightmare. Lots of rewriting history about Hughes.

The slow start thing is the one managerial tip he picked up from Alex Ferguson, whose sides were usually famously slow out of the blocks but finished the season strongly. That's it though for Hughes inheriting Fergie's abilities, he certainly doesn't know how to coach a side or develop a squad. Quite the opposite, he seems to smother sides and let them drift tactically over time.
