to be in the England squad - we can all exhale and relax! www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/19820612 - with Caulker in the U21's, Neville all but confirming earlier this week that Rio is finished & with Jones/Smalling injured, Ryan 'sneaks' in as 4th CB behind Cahill/Lescott/Jagielka. The remaining question is simply whether he gets a chance in the 2 games...

Don't think it'll be that simple, is that Dawson from WBA available? He played in the circus football in the Olympics and he was a Woy signing. Then there's this ludicrous link to Michael Mancienne. I'm sure Woy will have someone up his sleeve to avoid picking Ryan

Man Utd are short on defenders- watch them come in for him in January- and then he'd walk into the England team!

I'm sure Woy will have someone up his sleeve to avoid picking Ryan Dawson also in the U21's, and tbh the Mancienne thing is complete b0llocks that only came from his manager. I'm with you on the lack of trust in Roy, but both Dawson & Caulker in U21's does mean Ryan 'last man standing' for the 4th spot...

I believe it when the squad is announced tomorrow. I will be buzzing of he's in it, just got to pray he gets a chance to play then.

Steven Taylor? Shawcross seems obvious - but who knows what's going on in Woy's odd mind.

I know it's abit off topic but Jonjo Shelvey is the oldest looking 20 year old I've ever seen! ;D

I actually rate Dawson and think he's been a little unlucky at Spurs - but as you say, 1 minute of league action rather should preclude him! Taylor isn't impossible I suppose... it does all very much point to Ryan making the cut though this time around, now down to Ryan to impress in training!

I suspect there's a nod and a wink understanding over at England. Ryan was involved in an incident that injured a Welshman and infuriated a Frnchman who both have more sway over what happens in English football than any non Englishman should.
Before the incident with Ramsay he had been picked for his first squad. Since then...

Taylor was injured in the last Newcastle match and has only just come back from a season out injured, so you'd think he'd be a risky pick.

Both Shawcross and Crouch should be on the English team.
I've only been following the team for a year or so but it seems that when it comes to selecting all-star teams or national teams with Stoke players there is a real bias against us. The fact that there is any debate on Shawcross and Crouch is a slap in the face in my opinion. If these guys played for Man City/Chelsea/Man U/Everton they'd be on the squad no question.

Alan Hansen wrote a piece in one of the papers at the weekend about the pitiful centre back options available to England following the retirement of the great John Terry. He singled out what he considered to be each alternative and compared them all unfavourably to Terry. Not once did he mention Ryan Shawcross. So, if Roy Hodgson is on the same page as Alan Hansen the Ryan and England ain't gonna happen

I was reading up a bit on Shawcross and his past. I see he started his career with Manchester United and Stoke gave Man U $1M to keep him with the Potters. Do ya'll think Man U regrets that decision given that Shawcross is so young and still has a lot of time to improve? I guess their general thought is we can get whoever we want so who cares....so unfair.

He was well down the pecking order at Man Utd when we bought him -but he was only 19 at the time. The Man Utd manager has admitted that selling him was a mistake. Interestingly Utd are said to have a "buy back" clause on him. This doesn't mean we have to sell him. What it does mean is that if we accepted a bid of, say, £15 million from another club then Man Utd would be entitled to buy him for £15 million if they wished - and of course, if he wanted to rejoin them.

I think we're likely to see Fergie come calling in January, with their defensive problems and the fact he probably has first refusal on him

Beloved Monkfish,
That's what I was thinking as well. As poor as Manchester United has been on the back end I'd think Shawcross has to be at the top of that list. I'd hate to see him go as he is easily my favorite player.
Are we sure about the buyback clause?

Would I be right in saying Shawcross signed a new deal not so long ago, weather that clause would still be in the contract I don't know. I would imagine there would be a minimum release clause if anything..

I would imagine there would be a minimum release clause if anything.. if there is a clause then, once Man Utd put the clause in their contract with us, it stays there for as long as we have him. It isn't a contract with Ryan it is a contract between us and Man Utd.

I'm always surprised that so many think they will be in for Ryan, with Evans, Jones and Smalling all at the club. I can't see them spending £15M on another CB, especially with the need they have for a CM.

Got a good feeling about England squad. I think Crouch and Shawcross will both be named in tomorrows squad. On 5 live Matt Holland(ex Ipswich) really putting a good word in for Ryan.Says hes good enough for England and has been very impressed with him this season.
