I’m not overly convinced either will turn our fortunes dramatically but some stability is handy and presumably it’s not taken a massive chunk out of available salary spend.

Hearts were my local club for many a year but I never went. Never took to either Edinburgh team. There’s an edge to a lot of the locals that can be quite unwelcoming. Beautiful place mind.

This thread has the makings of one that will be revisited many times in years to come when Joe has the chance to develop his career further !

This falls into the Collins category for me - have we become the sort of club who sells medium / long term potential quality to buy short term ‘do a job in the championship’ quantity? We probably have and it’s a bit depressing.

I feel the way we play engenders apathy especially at home - it certainly doesn’t get people on their feet (other than the away fans). As someone pointed out yesterday the best way to describe the style of football is ‘passive’. Fumbling around waiting for something to happen. Everything depends on a more aggressive and proactive set of players being gathered and tactics being changed accordingly. Much as I am in favour of MON having another season to prove the building blocks that have been put in place on and off the park can be made to work I do feel he is going to have to eat a bit of humble pie and shelve some of the principles he seems to hold about the way the game is played at this level. Basically the public needs something to get excited about.

That's so true. I hadn't thought about it like that, but it is. Under TP and MH we had 10 years of not normal service. Just as we did under Tony Waddington. We'll be back, one fine day. I don’t think I’ll still be around in 23 years time. There you hit on the major flaw in my relaxed approach to all this - Im pretty sure I won’t be either 😕

Got to give him and the whole set up another season. I’m sure that all concerned will realise that anything worse than play-offs and it will be curtains. I may be over the top, but sorry, has to be automatic promotion and nothing else. If by some miracle he manages it, happy days. However he won’t and being content with the play offs gives him yet more wriggle room and that dangerous carrot of giving him yet another year to under achieve. I don’t think it shows the players the right sort of mentality needed if the play offs are considered good enough. There will be at least 2 fairly battle hardened Championship teams rejoining us from the Prem next season - 3 if Burnley drop too. It’s going to be tough (again).

Because we might be losing out on a good management team and setting things back another 3 years. The definitive answer will be available after next season. 😂😂😂you are kidding right No I honestly believe that.

We’ve got enough decent players to build something but I would agree there’s a rethink needed tactically. We’ve got a reasonable spine but we also need half a team just to stand still and the recruitment record of this manager and his team is patchy. I’d like to see some players brought in with a clear purpose - its all seemed a bit scatter gun for the last couple of years. Like you say time for the recruitment side of things to step up to the mark. Most of all though I think we’ve got to stop faffing around every game and just drive on and get the job done. Its in MON’s hands now. If he doesn’t change some basics he will have no one to blame but himself.

Nothing new really - the TP and MH (initial) years were the exception rather than the rule. I’m amazed people haven’t learnt to roll with the punches a bit more Things can and will turn ....eventually. . Things don’t just happen though. There has to be a reason to believe. There isn’t one currently. We’ve got enough decent players to build something but I would agree there’s a rethink needed tactically.

The players we are looking for will obviously be influenced by the type of football we are looking to play next season and I wouldn’t be surprised if MON has some drastic rethinks after trying to pass his way to promotion - pragmatism may well be the order of the day and players like Carroll (fitness risk as he is) could well be playing a more prominent roll in his thoughts.

I know it’s only highlights I’ve seen but there seems a genuine flow to the way that the youngsters play that just doesn’t translate to the first 11. If I lived locally I would certainly get myself over to watch the various age groups. Rooster and his team have done a heck of a job in the last few years.

Interestingly those clubs that seem have reaped some immediate returns following a management change this season (Boro and Forest) have appointed managers with a track record in this division .....which is exactly what the board tried to do when Rowett was appointed. We , as per normal, didn’t fall lucky when others did.

Next season is so important for the lad - he needs to hit the ground running and produce a prolonged period showing the form he has briefly displayed he is capable of.

Recency bias is massive amongst you lot haha. He's been crap for about 75% of his time at Stoke, this new deal would almost certainly put him at the top echelon's of the "pot covid alignment" of contracts. He's 32, his best days are behind him (of which many he was still shite for). This is the time now to finally part ways, shake hands and say goodbye. Get someone younger and more consistent. Is it just a coincidence that he's seen an upturn in form for the last 2 months of a 6 year 60k deal? Absolutely not the case as far as I’m concerned. In my opinion he has been consistently good in his time at this club - even in periods when some of those around him have let the side down noticeably.

His vocal presentation doesn’t really work well on radio but if you can get past that he really does make a lot of very valid points and you certainly cannot accuse him of sitting on the fence - he tells it exactly as he sees it , warts and all.

It isn’t just goals though. It’s what he brings to the team. Because, weirdly, football is a team game. He’s fucking brilliant. And I love him. He’s far from brilliant and goals are the only thing he brings , but good on him for that as they’re most important thing in a game I think opposition defences might tell you he’s a bit of a handful .

It’s a funny thing but half a dozen or so vociferous critics is interpreted as the fan base being ‘split’ over the contribution of Brown - in fact many many thousands of more sensible but a lot quieter supporters recognise his immense contribution to the team this season and are appreciative of his talents.

He’s never looked comfortable in the role. Hopefully his batting will flourish for years to come. Stokes seems to be the only realistic candidate but I’m not sure it’s going to be a great fit either.

It’s a question of how many ‘bit part’ players you can afford to keep on the books. Vrancic has undoubted quality and pops up now and then with a telling contribution (I see Sawyers in the same light) but we will need some more consistent contributions in the middle especially if Joe leaves. One of our biggest failings this season is that you never know what version of certain players are going to show up - the Championship is a grind and we need some regular 7 or 8 out of 10 performers in the engine room to help Baker.

Having seen the stats for Sky coverage of the Championship this season it’s clear that they don’t think we pull any sort of viewing figures. Teams with worse records than ours have been shown far more often. The games they have shown have , from my memory , not been been bad entertainment for the neutral at all.

This idea of getting people into the ground 1,2 or 3 hours before a game to be entertained ( and spend money of course) to make it a whole day match experience Does anyone know of any ground where this actually works (in a good way) outside of executive boxes (which I personally dislike)? Most grounds in the States probably where they love all that shit Can’t see many turning up at the Bet365 at 12 o’clock in December to spend 3hours in the freezing cold eating overpriced sausage rolls and watching a few dancing cheerleaders I much prefer an hour in the Glebe and turn up in my seat just as they’re kicking off Imagine standing around the car park in Green Bay , Minnesota, or Buffalo! A bit parky to say the least.

Simple fact is Bonham came into the side for whatever reason and has subsequently played well enough not to be dropped - it is right and proper that he hasn’t been.
