Just spent the weekend at Callow Top. Great sport, Crucian carp up to 3lb, tench up to 5lb, perch to 1 and half lb plus some nice roach and rudd. They are some of the weights of fish i caught. I imagine that there are bigger in there.

We went to fish on the breakwater in Holyhead. 7 hours fishing and one of us (not me I hasten to add) caught a tiddler. God knows what it was but we had a good laugh, a good bbq and a few of them got nicely pissed. All in all a grat day out.

HOLYHEAD breakwater has always been a difficult venue to fish as it has a very rocky sea bed.As I have mentioned before you are always probably fishing at night time. Both Bangor Pier and Beaumaris pier are both good places to try with all species possible. As for myself...well I have also had a bit of a disaster at a new venue Lakemore Fisheries. The weather didn't help but I still managed to lose a 40lb catfish which was the only one hooked on the lake by anyone. I would have to advise anyone that in my estimation it is rather over hyped, and is not cheap at £25 or £30 a go, and is more designed to catch the angler than the fish perhaps.

On a recent trip to a local pool, I had an 18lb common on free lined floating pellet.

Some numpty was using unprepared peanuts as bait apparently, which the fish are unable to digest or pass through them and should they eat enough, the nuts eventually poison their system, this being the reson nuts are banned from most day ticket and club waters. Its been a bad year for Bluebell losing The Creature and Benson.

My mate and I fished Tatton Park in a strong headwind today. It was thick with Canadian Pondweed but none-the -less we manfully soldiered on and both fished the feeder.I had some quality roach and bream and my mate caught Tench to 4lb. It's £6 a day payable to the rangers on the bank.

I had big twenties taking bread out of my hand !

I went to Trentfield Farm on the Trent at Church Laneham. It was absolutely excellent for big bream and coarse stuff. I had 50 lb in 4 hours without trying.I also went to Dunham Bridge just down the road on a day ticket but it was sweltering hot and our eastern europeans brothers ruined it with swimming ,poaching , throwing litter etc. Highly recommended chaps...google Trentfield Farm and Dunham bridge...both great.

Was it free fishing at Trentfield Mumf, or did you go in a Caravan / Camping ? I've been on the Trent recently near Great Haywood, it had been reported all the fish were killed after last year's pollution but there were a few big chub to be had. There is quite a deep gravel run that screams Barbel but I fished it with a small feeder ( I had 2 x 3lb chub out of that swim ) and either there were no Barbel, I spooked them or I was fishing wrong. The water was clear, relatively slow and 15-18 yards wide.................. any thoughts ? www.fisheries.co.uk/hamstall/index.htmHas anybody fished the above water ? Fancy trying a big tench water, been to look at Wesport but it is covered in weed.

They have a few pegs and even though the campsite was packed there was only a couple of guys fishing with a feeder and maggots. On the entrance to the site there is also day tickets on the bank...but in all honesty there are loads of day ticket stretches in the area. Have a look at Dunham Bridge on Google...Hotspot for the Barbel...One guy had 8 big ones.

I sea fish from my kayak and the best place near here is on the Yealm Estuary either between Cellars Beach and Misery Point or about half a mile out of the estuary between the sand bar and Mewstone, both on a falling tide. Sea bass, Pollock, mackerel in abundance.

I think it's because, in an estuary, a falling tide will allow food in way of small shrimps and the like to be heading seaward therefore bringing predators in from the sea to feed. Therefore fishing at an estuary entrance during this time will bring better results. .... The Yealm Estuary showing Misery Point and Cellars Bay on the left and Mewstone in the distance.

Also what kind of kayak do you use etc.? I'm frequently going down to the south coast and was considering giving it a go if you can give me some tips.

Have to wear wet suit from about now until Spring. Mine is a sea kayak which is 13ft in length which gives comfortable sea riding and easy to control. Anything less than about 11ft will be more difficult to control in the sea. Although a shorter kayak is easier on surf but I don't do that owing to artificial hip not liking being thrown off the kayak. For fishing I would not recommend a rod more than five feet in length because it will become more difficult to handle when trying to land a fish on the kayak. You can buy kayaks all fitted out with fishing rod brackets and holders but mine has a bracket that straps on the back of my seat which holds rods. This is my kayak the Orange one is basic the yellow one fitted out for fishing. I can get two of these on the top of my Octavia with ease. They weigh around 23kgs so fairly easy to handle. It's a fairly cheap way of getting on the water tbh. New Perception Triumph like mine kayak with seat and oar is around 350-400 quid. They do hold their price so ebay etc will not be that much cheaper.

I'm off down to West Bay in Dorset in three weeks time so I'll let you know what the fishing is like. There's a nice pier to fish from which looks rather good. The Cod are already starting to show in the Mersey with plenty of bass being caught along the North Wales coast although I haven't personally had a dangle yet.

I know West Bay as my in laws come from Burton Bradstock and I fished from West Bay Pier many years ago with my nephew. The new pier which I think you refer to is much better positioned. I now find West Bay very commercialised compared to when I first encountered it courting the Mrs in 1970s. Let us know how you get on fishing there.
