I have mentioned ive just had 10 days in Italy for my brothers wedding. Cortona was beautiful. Ive spent the last 4 days seeing Rome. Im not the greatest of travelled people. However it has gone to the Top of my list. It was just magnificent. From the Trevyi Fountain to the Collaseum and Sistine Chapel. Michaelangelo spending for years painting that ceiling almost on his back just marvelous. To think you go to another country aswell with a population of 800. (Vatican) Then Wed morning seeing the Pope as he gives his mid week message was special. The food fantastic traffic a bit crazy. Stunning buildings round every Corner. Grazie Italy So ive started a thread to talk about the places you visit good or bad.

Good stuff, pleased you enjoyed it.
Me and the missus love Italy as well. We've been to Milan, Turin, Bologna, Pisa, Lucca, Siena, Florence, Verona, Venice, Naples, Sorrento, Capri, Mt. Etna, Pompeii, Herculaneum, Amalfi Coast, Lake Garda, Tuscany, and loads more I can't remember. Next year we're going to Lake Maggiore and surrounding area.
Lots to see in all of those places nut Rome was absolutely superb with all the history, and places to see. The one big let down was Venice as it was absolutely packed with tourists - there were 5 cruise ships as well as the thousands of other tourists on the day we visited, you literally couldn't move.
Food and climate are great, and the majority of the people are friendly and helpful. Tad expensive though.

Some of our Europa League cities were fantastic. The only one I didn't particularly get on with was Tel Aviv and Valencia I could do with going back to to see more.
Split is an amazing coastal city with loads of ancient history and a quirky/dramatic centre. Everything is easily walk-able and the small bays/beaches were spot on.
Bern, near Thun, has a lot going for it in terms of being in Switzerland so really clean and well-maintained but also had masses of really old and interesting buildings. Also went to Zurich on that trip which was fantastic as well. Beautiful country. Thun centre itself was other-worldly.
Kiev is fascinating to visit because of the historical and ongoing political situation and sense of pride in the nation. The statue of the Motherland and the area around there was superb.
Istanbul was pretty stunning, especially the Grand Bazaar and Blue Mosque. It's global location, effectively straddling two continents does a lot for it and like Kiev can be done for very little money. Insane amount of history, a lot like Rome which I'd also put near the top of my list.
I went to New York for the first time this March and can't wait to go back. You could spend a month there and still not see everything.

The new quarter down at the sea end of the dry riverbed is seriously impressive as is the rest of the riverbed parkway.

I've been there on for the festival and I've never come across anything like it before or since. 220 plus effigies on every major intersection in the city set on fire at midnight apart from the winner, lit at 12.30 and then the municipal one in the main square set on fire at 1:00 all to the backdrop of caps being set off all around and the smell of gunpowder. The Offerta, the procession of traditionally dressed girls and boys with flowers and the marching bands to the cathedral is stunning. Then on top of this is the afternoon daily fireworks which is deafening.

When we played over there I met up with an old mate, a Wolves fan, and was treated to a paella made on the open oven overlooking the pool The main square looked fabulous decked out in red and white.

Stayed in a cottage which seems to be the thing to do. So got a pool. Managed to relax before doing so much walking seeing in Rome. The happy couple had a great wedding aswell. For me there was Beauty everywhere in Rome. The food was fantastic. final night meal. The only downside for me was a senegalise man that caught up with us. Asked where we were from. " I love england he said. Sadio Mane we all love Sadio Mane" next minute puts a braclet on our wrists gives us a little wooden elephant as a gift he says from Mane. Then follows us shouting you help my family you help my family. When he realised he was getting no where he got angry and demanded the stuff back which we gave him no problem. Cheap tat anyway. To many of those people around. Rather than have a proper stand doing it right aswell. People just clearly going to local shops buying bags of water then walking round. Shouting Water Water you want it 1 euro. Went Budapest 2 years ago. Stunning loads to do brilliant. Rome just tops it i think though. Out of the ones ive been id go. Rome Budapest Berlin Valencia (really went for Stoke game). Like to do Riga Vienna Luxembourg over time aswell just Europe that is.

I love both Lisbon and Porto. I have also heard very good reports of Budapest. I was there in 1964 when it was still under communist rule and bullet scars were still on the walls of buildings from an earlier uprising. Vienna has been voted number 1 city in the world to live. Outside Europe, I loved Rio de Janeiro (but not a safe place at night) and also Buenos Aires. I also liked San Francisco. Krakow is also a good destination for a short break and not expensive.

Did a quick trip around a few this time last year - flew to Budapest then got trains/coaches to Bratislava, Vienna, Krakow and finally Prague where we flew back from. Had a brilliant time, not really expensive (public transport over there is brilliant and cheap - makes ours look like what it is - shit and expensive, by and large) and much more enjoyable than lying on a sun lounger for 2 weeks, for me anyway

Just got back from eight days in New York. Had never been to the East Coast before, but I thought New York was amazing. One of the few places that I have ever been that actually looked exactly like I thought it would - Manhattan has a monstrous, mythic quality that you will either love or hate. Did some of the popular places, but also got out and about a bit to Brooklyn, Harlem and Jersey City. Chilled out on the Sheep Meadow in Central Park for a few afternoons, and was genuinely moved to tears by my teenage daughter's knowledge and appreciation of Van Gogh when stood in front of 'A Starry Night' with her at MOMA. Like any big American city, high levels of poverty and homelessness, but perhaps not quite as prominent as, say, Los Angeles - that said, I'd go back to either at the drop of a hat.

Love Antwerp, Glasgow and Barcelona among others. Basically anywhere with a bit of history, good transport and that's good for boozing. Paris was great but expensive (and fucking freezing when we were there)
Disappointed with Kuala Lumpur tbh, just motorways/dual carriageways everywhere and very, very westernized. Was expecting a big culture shock but was brought down to earth when shopping in H&M over there, listening to Olly Murs on the shop radio, buying a shirt that they didn't have the size of in my home town. That's globalization for you I suppose. Frankfurt was a bit of a shit hole as well.

Didn't go between the two mate so I don't know much about that journey, go here and you should be able to sort it - www.seat61.com/index-mobile.htmWe went to Vienna for the day from Bratislava by train, takes about an hour, we just did the main stuff in the centre and used the underground to get around, interesting place but seemed quite expensive (which is why we got digs in Bratislava!) and we didn't regret just doing the day. To learn about the history of the place this was superb - www.timetravel-vienna.at/en/ - we picked up a discount voucher from someone nearby, worth looking out for, there's an art place opposite that has some really interesting political US pieces in it, worth a look if you have to wait. Prague is easy to get around (and cheap!), we did a couple of walking tours, used Sandemans iirc, one we paid for after the walk (on a whatever you think it's worth basis) and one we paid for up front, both were excellent. We were going to visit Lidice (not far away) but I got a bit of man flu and wimped out. Journey to the airport is simple and cheap using the underground and a bus (only need 1 ticket). Stayed Airbnb in both places, I'd highly recommend the Bratislava one but not the Prague one to be honest, if you fancy Bratislava let me know and I'll give you the details of where we stayed. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions or want more detail

Yes, we saw the river trip, train was a lot cheaper and more convenient time wise for us, trains are very frequent, there's a lot of Slovakians commute it on a daily basis. Might do the river trip if we go back at some point.

Off and on with ur ticket when you want.then on headphones in and just listen as your told about a place when you ride past it.

Ah ok, probably my fault to be fair, rarely go to one place, usually try and travel around a bit. For Vienna I'd still look into staying in Bratislava and travelling to Vienna as and when I fancied, Bratislava is a lovely place anyway, cracking free entertainment on when we were there in the square and a bar or two. Didn't see any red buses in Prague but I wouldn't have been looking to be fair, we just joined on a free walking tour, much to the confusion of the guide who couldn't understand how he'd gained punters He turned out to be the best tour guide we've had, he was a baby at the time of the protests apparently, incredibly knowledgeable about Prague, called Phillipe, well worth wandering around with if you can't find any bus tours. Edit - just looked on airbnb for Bratislava digs and there's some absolutely cracking places for under £50 a night and most are a lot cheaper, can't remember what we paid but I remember thinking it was a bargain. Even if you decide to stay in Vienna a day trip to Bratislava would be worth it imo.

Great. Weve now used one in Rome and Budapest. My friend also used one in Madrid. Just ride around get off when you want. The last day in Rome we wanted a rest from all the walking so we just sat on Headphonds in and that was it until we really had seen all we could got off and had a couple of beers. At Vatican we paid 45 euro for a tour guide also paid for one at Collaseum not as expensive but it was worth the money in both cases in our opinion. Didnt have to queue and as you can imagine they were long because of so many tourists especially to get into Vatican. We walked straight in gave us all a device and some headphones and you can then listen and have a guide that knows everything and goes through all the history taking you the various parts in decent order.

Cape Town - go now before the place turns into Zimbabwe and the rand is cheap. Amazing city, great people fantastic food and drink, just don't do a Ray Parlour.
Seattle - Microsoft and Boeing tow. Most of it seems to be built through their money. Again amazing buildings, great location, plenty to see and do. Tip if you stop in The Edgewater Hotel, a freight railway runs past about 20m away, don't expect much sleep.
Vancouver - JUST DO IT.

I haven't been to Valencia since I went there whilst interailing in 1989! Now, whilst it was a long time ago, it didn't do a great deal for me(train station was impressive)Sell it to me & I may revisit it... Ive been back to Valencia twice since we played there, the national day festival in October with the Christians and Moors parade was excellent. The 9km park which was the old river, lots of new cycle routes and the beach is fantastic, some great restaurants there and in the city centre, a peaceful botanical gardens to escape to for a quiet hour.

I had a great night in Darlington last night, a good meal in a Greek restaurant called Santorini, couple of after meal ouzos with the owner/chef, then an open air show about the suffragites, quite deep and powerful.

The riverbed story is quite interesting. In summer it would dry up and the marshes would breed mosquitos which would do their best to kill the population. In winter the river would flood and do it's best to kill the population. The solution was to divert the river up the coast leaving the most magnificent piece of park in the middle of an ancient city.

I went to Rome last year for my 40th and I absolutely loved it. I am a bit of a history buff and I do like a bit of renaissance art so it was perfect for me. We've booked to go Berlin next month so I'm really looking forward to that.
