I went to Rome last year for my 40th and I absolutely loved it. I am a bit of a history buff and I do like a bit of renaissance art so it was perfect for me. We've booked to go Berlin next month so I'm really looking forward to that. Did it a few years back. If you like ur beer you will be in for a treat. I love animals so I thought it was good when we went Berlin Zoo. Did the usual stuff Checkpoint Charlie Brandenburg gate Reichstag. Christmas markets were just starting when we went. We flew into 1 of 2 airports. Think they have since merged into one big one. Nice place to go though you should have fun.

Not yet, the new airport is very delayed. www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/news/berlin-new-airport-delayed-again/And is a bit of national scandal over there. It's also even further out than the other two, so not ideal. Checkpoint Charlie is a bit dull/touristy nowadays. If you went when a East German tank was hovering about it's all a bit tame now. The Mauerpark and BreslauerStrasse is a lot more interesting and the TV tower is always good visit. Like all large cities there's far more to do than a Easyjet weekend away will accommodate.

Luxembourg is also on my list. Have you been to Krakow? Excellent place, got a good recommend for digs there. Krakow is one of tbe best weekend breaks in Europe in my opinion. If anyone wants to earn brownie points with their better half then this is the place for 3-4 days. Auschwitz. Salt Mines. And in town you have: Wavel Castle. Jewish Quarter at Kazimiertz Largest medieval square in Europe Not to mention lots of hip and trendy bars and good food at reasonable prices. Better than Prague in my opinion.

Probably right about it being better than Prague, I really enjoyed it, found a place called Cafe Philo on the last night, don't know if you've been, well worth popping in, met some interesting characters in there. Only downside about it was the stag do's (mainly UK obviously) but unfortunately we had to be there over a weekend and couldn't totally avoid that aspect of it.

I have mentioned ive just had 10 days in Italy for my brothers wedding. Cortona was beautiful. Ive spent the last 4 days seeing Rome. Im not the greatest of travelled people. However it has gone to the Top of my list. It was just magnificent. From the Trevyi Fountain to the Collaseum and Sistine Chapel. Michaelangelo spending for years painting that ceiling almost on his back just marvelous. To think you go to another country aswell with a population of 800. (Vatican) Then Wed morning seeing the Pope as he gives his mid week message was special. The food fantastic traffic a bit crazy. Stunning buildings round every Corner. Grazie Italy So ive started a thread to talk about the places you visit good or bad. I thought the Basilica Papale di Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome was a geat place to explore, hardly any tourists there either www.google.com/search?q=Basilica+Papale+di+Santa+Maria+Maggiore&client=firefox-b&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjm5Omau9bdAhUFKsAKHUVIATcQ_AUIDygC&biw=1600&bih=774

I need Advice. I'm a complete novice when it comes to London. Only visited a few times.
I will attending Wembeley for the foo fighters on Sat 3rd Sept.
We are staying in Watford then will be heading into London. What's the best way to pay for getting around on the Tube. Will probably make a day of it. Before heading to the concert.
Somthing else strange I can't seem to book train tickets yet via trainline.com to get down there from this way.
Thanks for advice.

If your tickets end up being worth more than a day pass they'll limit your cost to the day pass.

I just have my Contactless Bank Card mate. was thinking day pass also. You can use that! If you do a lot of journeys they'll cap your spend at no more than a day pass price. You don't have to do anything except remember to tap in and out. Much as we shit on London TfL are pretty good in my experience.

Absolutely tap in/out with bank cards. HOWEVER if you are going with kids apply now for children's oyster cards as a way better cheaper option than the day travel pass kids rates . TFL are really good but their webpage explaining the different rates and tickets requires a flipping degree to comprehend IMO. if you're planning on going more regularly , consider getting Oysters yourself ..have a great time, Geddy and Alex from Rush are on at Foos gig so very jealous

Bit random but …… somewhere quite unusual to visit away from the usual Dubrovnik for Croatia is Zadar …. Further north, has its own airport, quaint, not so commercial (yet!) beautiful marble paving stones all over the old town, great day trips available such as ‘bear watching in the woods’, just a nice viable cheap (ish) option

Random US places: Madison, Wisconsin and Fort Collins, Colorado.
Walkable centres, loads of interesting breweries. Small so only worth one night if you're just drinking but Ft Collins is near climbing/skiing/mountain biking and Madison has loads of lake and river things to do.

One interesting thing about DC that I don’t see mentioned much.
Apart from a couple of private museums (Bible, Spy) all of the museums in town are free. The Air and Space in town is spectacular (there are two now the one by the airport is the Udvar Hazy) Great Nation History (not as good as London but terribly interesting) Great art galleries and easily to amble round the Mall and take in the monuments.
As a capital that was designated there really was no great industrial/port status (Baltimore was the port) so the city is not only green and tree friendly but a star in its own right for Cherry Blossom Festival. Georgetown is walkable, next to the Potomac and chock full of good bars and places to eat. Adams Morgan for the night life. DuPont Circle too.
The Kennedy Center is fascinating. There are free tours of the building. Lots of lush, lush air con for the dog days of summer and a free show (The Millenium Stage) at 6 pm every night. The free show can be fascinatingly eclectic. Literally, one night Randy Newman the next might be four singing park rangers from Utah. Show is actually broadcast every evening. Three camera shoot!
Mostly walkable. The Zoo is great (I am biased, my fave zoo is Naples Fl) and just a hop on the Metro. The zoo isn’t free.
If anyone would like any more information or, in any way, help, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Another ‘off piste’ place was Montenegro, from Dubrovnik airport you get a transfer South, quite a few small seaside resorts, one was a spa town with guys selling mud they’d sourced from various deposits on the beaches which you smeared all over you for their ‘therapeutic qualities’. Boat trips to places like Kotor where cruise ships visit but all ‘cheap as chips’ with most hospitality workers speaking reasonable English.

I've booked for the London marathon weekend in October Friday - Monday, but got them direct off Avanti By a single and then go to Reading on the Sunday to watch Stoke, and get a train back from there

Of all the cities I've seen Rome and New York are the best . They both make modern London look pathetic.

I'm a huge fan of London despite its many grotty bits as grew up there , some gems round the world for all sorts of reasons, NY, Detroit has bundles of character , love Munich Cologne, Bucharest but a huge favourite is Vancouver, just a wonderful urban space right on the ocean and some amazing open spaces on the periphery.

Agree that London is a fab city, hugely (I feel) due to the myriad ways of travelling around via its transport infrastructure. However, something I always recommend to people who don’t know our capital v.well is www.walks.com OK it’s more expensive than ‘free’ guided companies where you do a walking tour and then tip the guide at the end, but on the walks network there is a daily schedule of maybe eight walks, all themed (eg Dickens, Jack the Ripper, Harry Potter etc etc) and because the guides are mainly ex teachers or actors/musicians in need of pocket money they are wonderfully informative as well as entertaining.

Been to London a couple of times these last few months, love the place, wish I'd spent more time there sober in the past when I lived closer, so much to see, over 170 museums for a start, some of them amongst the best in the world and free! Still, the more people that think it's shit the better, might get less crowded 2nd or 3rd most visited city in the world depending on which list you look at, probably near the top of the dream place to visit for hundreds of millions of people throughout the world and it's virtually on our doorstep.
