I've been to Wilmington, Cape Fear and Wrightsville beach area of NC, very nice. Was in Chicago last year, going again later this year, I'm in Porto at the moment and was just talking in the hotel bar to two yanks from Chicago, last leg of their 2 week tour of Portugal in a hire car, Saudi it was very scary for them all those tight roads in little towns I'm definitely going back to Chicago. Just need to fit it in. I'd go for a week each year, money no object, and be happy just mooching around. Think we’ve spoke about this before but I’ve actually booked it now. Got flights to NY from a Thursday to a week Tuesday, so 11 nights, end of September into October. Planning on spending 2 nights in NY and then get the train to Boston to spend the weekend. I’ll head to Chicago for the 2nd weekend, do you reckon Thursday to Monday will be enough? We were thinking about driving between Boston and Chicago.

I don't know if I'd drive personally, I'd see it as a waste of time, unless time was no object.

Not sure if there is anything historical in between or if you will just end up staying just off the interstate in a chain hotel eating from a chain restaurant. I like Chicago but clearly not on the same scale as others do. Boston is my favourite US city but v.similar to UK cities. NYC is a bit 'meh' for me. Been a few times but 4-5 days for a first visit is plenty.

Interesting thread. I’m not overly well travelled. Still quite young but hope to become more well travelled as time goes on. My issue is I just get overwhelmed with choice and then just end up not going to as many places as I should. Or just taking the easy option and going all inclusive somewhere like Gran Canaria for a week (which is where I am now). I want to do everything and it makes choosing really difficult! How do people tend to choose the places they go?How do people find travelling with young kids as well? For me particularly looking back I always wonder why I picked Nepal to spend 6 months as really the plan was just to go somewhere interesting to volunteer for a few months for experience teaching then get into the qualification so could get into teaching asap - the volunteer book had loads of places I'd wanted to go like Chile, Costa Rica, Ethiopia, Mongolia, Ghana where I thought I would have preferred to go. It wasn't until the days leading up to finally biting the bullet and booking where realised I could afford to go Nepal for 6 months as there was a sale on rather than 2-4 months in the others so chose there with absolutely no idea what to expect. Genuinely landed in Kathmandu in a jumper and thick boots packing a massive coat and inners despite having no intention of trekking - absolutely no clue it's typically 30 degrees in the Kathmandu valley Apr-Sept and massively humid. So basically chose Nepal via being an ignorant tight arse really! Completely glad I absolutely winged it though as always wonder how things would have panned out if had chosen somewhere else or come home early.
