Been to London a couple of times these last few months, love the place, wish I'd spent more time there sober in the past when I lived closer, so much to see, over 170 museums for a start, some of them amongst the best in the world and free! Still, the more people that think it's shit the better, might get less crowded 2nd or 3rd most visited city in the world depending on which list you look at, probably near the top of the dream place to visit for hundreds of millions of people throughout the world and it's virtually on our doorstep. Very true and aside from the popular attractions, which are probably best avoided to be fair simply by virtue of being over-run, there are loads of off-the-beaten-track type places to visit that are fantastic. On my next trip I want to check out Dennis Severs House, sounds a strange and interesting oasis of history in a big modern metropolis: dennissevershouse.co.uk/There are lots of little places like this to find in London. Also, while we're in the UK, a big mention to Edinburgh. Loads to see and do up there in what is probably Britain's most attractive city. I keep meaning to get over to Northern Ireland to see what Belfast has to offer. Perhaps Oatcakers who've been can recommend it (or not!).

I'll take a look at that house, cheers

Soane was an architect in 1700s and early 1800s (designed the bank.of England among many others ) and a renowned antiquities and art collector and his house is very special, many of his collected items and some super design elements in the property. Can highly recommend

Morocco is one of my favourite countries- very civilised, cheap, friendly, easy, safe and always interesting. The oasis towns like Ait Benhaddou, Skoura and Ouazazate are as exotic and far removed from Europe as you can get whilst being so close. Tangiers old town is wonderful and hassle free, Marrakesh and Fez are unmissable but can be a bit of a hassle. Great place to go in winter.

I’m lucky enough to visit a lot of European cities through work. Some of my favourites are Madrid, Cologne, Munich, Düsseldorf, Lisbon, Vienna. Helsinki is a crazy place, unlike any other city I’ve been to. Wonderfully weird. Recently went to San Diego which was fantastic.
Not really been many cities on holiday. Sydney I enjoyed, Singapore I hated.
I just love Germany personally, great city centres and great people.
Off to Budapest next month, on a long weekend city break this time, looks promising. Anyone been and have any recommendations?

Outdoor baths/sauna complex thing, think it's called the Wedding Cake, worth a visit. Loads to do really.

Bit random but …… somewhere quite unusual to visit away from the usual Dubrovnik for Croatia is Zadar …. Further north, has its own airport, quaint, not so commercial (yet!) beautiful marble paving stones all over the old town, great day trips available such as ‘bear watching in the woods’, just a nice viable cheap (ish) option Been to Zadar a few times with the military - its alright. Recommend Pula in Croatia. Saw 2cellos in the open Pula arena. Great city to earn some brownie points with the Mrs.

And for a capital city it's not overly expensive I read a book once on Scandinavians and what I remember about Finland was (a) they don’t do small talk/waste words so even people who have known each other all their lives will just say “hi” and (b) Helsinki being the quietest capital city the author had ever been to, said that the city centre on a Saturday afternoon has the empty atmosphere of Sunday morning. Is that how you found it?

Totally agree +1 By far the best city in the world. So much to see and do in London and it has a vibrant pub scene. Always try to spend a couple of days there when I am back in the UK.

Is that how you found it? Can't speak to Helsinki but my work trip in Finnish Lapland was a bit of a culture shock. Maybe 40-50 people in the canteen in the morning and it was utterly silent apart from the odd clatter of spoon on cup. Daytime us Brits were out working in the countryside. Nighttime the locals got drunk and rowdy with sauna and karaoke. I think it's a bit like how Brits are quieter than Americans during the day but then we get drunk and louder at night. The Finns were like that times 100.

Is that how you found it? Not sure about the day time as was always working but at night Helsinki is absolutely rocking (literally), rock music is huge there and most pubs are rock themed or playing rock music. Things like fashion and decor, it’s completely unique to me to anywhere else I’ve been to and I’ve been to the other Scandinavian countries. The women are besotted with us English, if they hear you talking they will come and start a conversation almost starstruck. It’s extremely expensive, so much so there are regular night time helicopter rides to Tallin and back as it’s cheaper to do that than have a night out in Helsinki.

Beware of bars/clubs that are free, they charge an exit fee with big bouncers demanding the money. The ruin bars are something different. hellojetlag.com/budapest-ruin-bars/Why did you hate Singapore ?

I’m sure it’s a fantastic place but I couldn’t enjoy it due to the conditions

People literally go for a kip on the floor, did it myself in fact. Another thing is if you want to go to a bar or restaurant with air conditioning the prices Sky rocket and it seems as though absolutely everyone smokes! Vaping in public is a criminal offence.

any idea what's going on here I'm confused. Sat 3rd Sun 4th Sept. no Strikes currently planned for that day. It's been like that for weeks, tried to book trains to Euston for the 4th. Driving instead now, got car parking booked for 3days at Hanger Lane (not far from the M1) for about a tenner, not bad really. Tube into the City on the central line.

Ended up drinking with an international group because hardly any locals speak English though.

Got a lot of love for Moscow, Mumbai, Cape Town, Seoul, Athens, Paris, Kathmandu, Napoli, Fort De France, Accra, Christchurch (NZ)... Oh and good old Lichfield, Staffordshire.
London is a total dump in comparison. Love the odd trip to the city for business but it's mostly a total dive.
