Why on earth do we need to segregate supporters?

We could have an LGBT or gay supporters group. We could also have one for women another for senior citizens and another for supporters from the towns of Stoke and Fenton. I suppose clubs for left-handed supporters and the tea drinkers might also be possible. Alternatively we could just have one universal group of people who support Stoke....maybe call us the 'Stoke City Supporters'. Radical...perhaps, but in some ways it seems less divisive!

Does everything need an LGBT group?
Surely everyone goes to the game to support their team, that's the only common interest needed, your race, age, sex, sexual preference is irrelevant.

I mean I couldn't really care who sits next to me at the match as long as you're not a complete idiot.
Your colour, age, sex or anything else wouldn't even cross my mind.
Well unless you're a black lesbian in her 60s with ginger hair... then I'll probably move seats.

Why is one required? There is a supporters club so why do you need a gay supporters club or, by implication, does that mean the existing supporters club is straight or whatever the term is. Its rediculous and don't the LGBT fraternity realise that they are themselves bringing on division and inequality by having these rediculous movements. What next....a gender identity disorder supporters club. Not being flippant or homophobic just stating that most people now accept others regardless of ethnicity, religious views, sexual orientation etc providing it's not rammed down the throats of those who think differently or creates division and hatred amongst communities.

My sister is gay, she never goes on any LGBT rallies etc or Gay Pride ventures, as in her words 'I just want to be part of the community and my private life is exactly that private'. I totally agree with her and she also said why have Gay Pride you guys she said never have Heterosexual Pride.
I really don't care if the supporter next too me is a 6 foot body building tranny, if he/she is a decent person that is good for me

I would like to clarify that my original post in this thread was in no way a call for an LGBT supporters club to be established, or a suggestion that we are in some way backward for not having one. I just thought it was a good article and found it interesting that we are now in a significant minority in not having one.
I subscribe to the commonly held view here that as long as we're all Stoke fans and aren't being unpleasant to each other there's no need for further segregation.
However, I have clearly hit on a sensitive subject. If I had created a thread suggesting there should be a new regional supporters club, or a new club for young or older fans, or fans with a disability, would it have prompted the same response?

When they went to the concourse I said to my old fella if they come back with a rucksack I'm off but apart from being a homophobic sexist xenophobe I'm a nice guy.

I don't get what is wrong in just being a fan of a club? Do we need to separate people into supporters clubs? What next, the Stoke City Protestant Supporters Club? The Stoke City Official Illiterate Supporters Group Sponsered By BenjaminBiscuit?

We've really missed an opportunity in having a fourth kit done up in bright pink for all the shirtlifters. Both of them would have bought a top, surely? Who'd have thought Frankie Boyle was a Stoke fan!

I'm disgusted at the crass insensitivity of the OP.
LGBT is sooooooo 2012.
It's now LGBTQIA. I apologise on 'they's' behalf to our QIA fans.

Isn't the reason for their being a need for LGBT groups revealed very plainly in the third paragraph?
"You're from a town full of gays and we hope you all die of Aids."

It's all good and well saying there's no need for LGBT supporters groups and I can see why people are saying it just causes more divisions. However, I assume they provide a safe space for LGBT fans where they don't have to worry about homophobic abuse which is all too common at football matches.

Agree it's an interesting read. I see Brighton also don't have an LGBT group and surely that's the model to follow ? I thought everyone as a supporter is of equal status ? We have just had an LGBT month at work where people can pledge to be an 'Ally' of our LGBT colleagues - really ? Oh and you get a rainbow lanyard if you sign up. Think it's quite bizarre ! Equality for all - especially Stokies in Bognor as I feel I'm in a minority group of 1 !!!

Just not necessary.
As said above, it is segregation that is not needed and it is a backwards step.
Homophobic chanting will not stop, if their is an LGBTQIA supporters flag draped from a stand.
The chants that get directed at mainly Brighton fans, are football fans playing on stereotypes - its what happens. Just like singing 'Where's my car stereo'? to Scousers.

Like most people at Stoke games, I am a heterosexual male. And like most, I couldn't care less whether the person in the seat next to me is male, female, black, white, straight, gay or whatever, as long as they're not being a twat and they're a Stokie.
However I do wonder how many people who quickly say, "We don't need an LGBT supporters group, it only serves to enforce barriers between gay and straight fans" do so because it's easier than admitting that the idea of a gay Stoke fans club makes them uncomfortable.
If I suggested a group was founded for OAP Stokies which older fans could use to meet and socialise with others with similar life experience and interests to themselves, and use to make sure that older people at matches were well-looked after, I can pretty safely say that not one single person would say it is a bad idea, and that it would only build boundaries between fans of different ages.
I'm playing devil's advocate, but it's food for thought.
