For all this 'don't care if people are gay' stuff, there seems to be a lot of unhappiness on here with any group being set up. What are people's issues with it honestly? As for the 'rammed down our throats' stuff, jesus fucking christ A bloke I know through work is a gay man or a raging homo as he describes himself, he's just opened a bar one of the lads who I work with asked him if it was a gay bar he looked shocked and said it wasn't as it would be full of queers then and who would want that. He explained that in his opinion you put a group of people together who feel prejudiced against and it just increases the prejudice they receive and what they feel towards others, he prefers the natural laugh and general chat with all genders and if somebody doesn't like him because he's gay thenthey weren't worth knowing anyway. In a way it's the same as football fans in a way sat in the stadium Saturday I will loathe and despise all things Arsenal but then when it's over I will go home and Sunday chat with my neighbour who is an Arsenal fan (surprisingly not a twat and doesn't hate stoke because he lives here after moving from London we are now his local team) and joke and get on. there fans wouldnt be sitting in one place though. It would just be a small group, campaigning on issues.

When I moved to London in 1972 we had a gay bloke in our drinking group , good fun . He introduced us straight guys to the Vauxhall Tavern . Great night out

Wouldn't having a gay supporters club be discriminatory in itself given that it would exclude non-gay supporters? We are clearly a novel club where we have a totally exclusive supporters club. Support Stoke City and you are in. It doesn't matter if you are male, female, young, old, straight, gay, black, white or anything else. If you are a Stokie, you are a Stokie. Nothing else really matters.

When the sport itself is intrinsically homophobic, I can still see every need for a dedicated group and am completely unsure as to what harm it is causing anyone anyway?

It's all good and well saying there's no need for LGBT supporters groups and I can see why people are saying it just causes more divisions. However, I assume they provide a safe space for LGBT fans where they don't have to worry about homophobic abuse which is all too common at football matches. Speaking as a gay person - I have never felt unsafe at a football match because of my sexuality. In fact I have actually felt more intimidated by 'Ginger' abuse - because everyone can see that I am Ginger, whilst some idiot is stood near me abusing a ginger player. Sounds funny I know - but that is my experience. Blame Kitson for the gingerisms.😁

The rest of my post is more of a general response to the thread rather than to you Dave, but what's clear is that there's a misunderstanding about the purpose these groups serve. They're not about separating the supporter base into gay and straight- they're a way for people who might be affected by the same issue to try and resolve whatever problems might be affecting them because they are, in some way, a minority. It's all very well for white, heterosexual men (who are the overwhelming majority of the fanbase) to say 'well, we don't need one of these groups', but who are we to make that judgement? We can't. The only people who can decide whether an LGBT group is needed are those people who would be eligible to join or form it. The fact we haven't got such a group is hopefully a product of there being no requests from gay supporters to form one, again hopefuly because no-one feels the need.

Sheikh, there was a gay season ticket holder in Block 13 for a couple of seasons. He had a spare ticket that he seemed to lend to boyfriends or his dad. Nobody nearby ever appeared bothered. They were just Stoke fans like everyone else.

If they want to form their own supporters group that is fine by me mate. Each to their own and all that. If they are a Stokie, they are a Stokie. I don't care a jot for their sexuality, nationality, colour of skin, age, gender or anything else.

I think you mistake Homophobic for Masculine and you assume it's intrinsically homophobic most people have risen above that gutter level now.
My daughter is a lesbian I've known since she was 14 she told me in her own time when she was 18. She has been with her partner who I love like another daughter since they were 15 and now they are 25 they fight just like straight couples, there is no difference, they do not make a song and dance about it or dress or act in a strange way or talk with a funny voice they just live. It has not held them back in their careers or stopped them from doing or going anywhere they want to. Right pair of globetrotters is what they are living the life that her mother and I always dreamed that she would do.
I'm fat ,bald and toothless so would you create a safe space for me as I can tell you I don't half get some abuse for it.(Especially from the wife)
You have to learn to deal with what you are, whatever that is, Segregation only draws attention to things others would not notice if they had not been labelled.
We do not need to make safe spaces and areas , we need to make ALL areas safe.

The game itself is homophobic. The fact there hasn't been one gay footballer in Premier League history lays testament to that! In that context I can fully understand why some might feel that groups like this are necessary. There's still plenty of dressing room and terrace 'bantz' on the rainbow laces day, lets not pretend that football is a beacon of tolerance on or off the pitch. It never has been and never will be. I do recognise your story though and you generally find these days that most people couldn't give a toss about sexuality but I still can't fathom why, whether these groups are born out of a sense of community, protection, celebration or protest, what the problem is?
