Having masterminded a stupendous home-turf victory over mighty Denmark Gareth Southgate has surely cemented his place as one of Englands greatest managers. Should we contrive to defeat Italy tomorrow then that life-long football fanatic and political opportunist Boris Johnson will no doubt feel compelled to recommend him for a well-deserved knighthood.

All this Knighthood bollocks has gotten out of hand in the last few years! I’ve always been quite optimistic that one day I’ll be awarded with an MBE/OBE/Knighthood etc. 🤡 I got shortlisted a number of years ago for an internal award and jokingly told my extremely gullible daughter that the awards ceremony was in London and if I was successful I’d get to be presented with the award by the queen, I left it at that. Many months later her really posh friend from London came to visit us and she said to me “I hear you’re coming down to London soon for an awards ceremony and you’ll get to meet the queen” I honestly hadn’t got the foggiest idea what she was on about, obviously forgot and never in a million years thought my daughter would have believed me, obviously had and had told all her mates.

All this Knighthood bollocks has gotten out of hand in the last few years! Totally agree - it's similar to the way that England caps were handed out almost randomly. Alf Ramsey was knighted for his "great services to football" in 1967. So I think we can expect Gareth Southgate to get his Sir-ship in the 2022 honours list if we win tomorrow. We also shouldn't forget the no doubt near future knighthoods for Sir Harry Kane, and Sir Raheem Stirling ! The rest of the team won't get a look in. Much the same as the '66 team where Bobby Charlton was knighted in 1994, and Geoff Hurst in 2004, both for services to the game, and the rest of the '66 team didn't get a look in, including our Gordon. I think times have changed since then, certainly not for the better, so any knighthoods for Kane and/or Sterling will probably be soon after their retirement from the game.

All this Knighthood bollocks has gotten out of hand in the last few years! I agree, but if England do win then he should get it. My problem has always been the no marks they give awards to either through political connections or because it’s trendy to do so. Proper awards for the scientist who developed the AZ vaccine are what it should be all about. A mate of mine got a BEM for volunteer services to a search and rescue team for thirty years of being called out in all weathers to find missing people and save their lives. These are the types of things the awards system should be about together with major sporting achievement which I think could be argued if England win it, but only if they win it.

He absolutely should be in comparison to others but also as a great achievement. I do agree they hand them out like Cup A Soup samples in supermarkets at times but would be deserved,

Why so people moan about footballers getting it? Cricket players got it when won the ashes and World Cup, rugby players did, Lewis Hamilton and Andy Murray have, yet when people mention footballers or managers they get defensive.

Imho,no sportsman should be knighted but they are handed out like confetti nowadays. I'll tell you who should be knighted, the paramedics who saved Christian Eriksen's life...now they are heroes.

Handed out like Cup-a-Soup samples in supermarkets? Handed out like confetti?! I can confirm I have had neither handed out to me in all the time I've been in a supermarket (twice weekly), or a church (not that often).

I agree but they are elite level sports people. Like I say the other sports elite athletes are getting them so why not footballers? It's the same with footballers pay, other sportsmen get paid the same if not more but footballers are usually the ones who get all the flack for it.

And football by far and away the most watched sport globally. I guess team sport over say individual sports maybe not recognised as much perhaps. No reason why people in sport shouldn't be knighted any more than say musicians or singers. As for the paramedics, I think foreigners can receive honorary awards can't they? They've been honoured by FIFA which is great.

Win or lose the final 'Sir Gareth' is a nailed on certainty.
'Services to a harmonious multi-ethnic Britain' will be his epitaph.

He’s done a brilliant job in galvanising the nation and he’s clearly a very decent bloke who the players love.
He’s a bang average manager though who needs to be replaced by someone who can take the shackles off this side. We’ve got some of the most exciting attacking talent in the world but he’s shit scared of making a game open and trying to outscore the opposition.
How has Saka managed to find himself ahead of Grealish and Sancho in this side?

Would love the FA to have the balls to sack him.
Well move him upstairs and sort the culture out.
Get a manager in who can get this attacking group of players actually playing attacking football.

I must admit the 2 subs be brought on in the 120th minute in order to take penalties won't go down in history as his finest moment

I must admit the 2 subs be brought on in the 120th minute in order to take penalties won't go down in history as his finest moment Nothing like brining on cold, inexperienced and weak minded youngsters to take massive penos. Mind you Henderson and Walker were taken off 🤨 I'd rather either of them take a peno than Rashford a notorious bottler in penos and a 19yr old. He just imposed his weakness in the moment onto those poor kids.
