They used them at the ground yesterday, and you still have to give your card to someone sat next to the machine and they swipe it for you. It's not like any of the ones I've used at away games. Don't see the point really.

So wait... you pass a card to a bloke who then swipes it? Well what a fucking cock up that is. I thought the whole point of a swipe card system was to make the ticket taker guys redundant. You invest a large amount of money in an automated system, that ultimately pays for itself once you've laid off god knows how many staff as a result.
Instead... we invest in a system, then keep the guys it is designed to replace. Genius.

Don't see the point really. Quite possible that they used yesterday as a "dry run" for the new system and that when it gets used next season we will swipe the cards ourselves. That's my theory anyway.

As Lakeland say surely it was a test to make sure it went smoothly, it's a new system so would be silly to not have backup around to make sure all is ok.
I fully expect it to be automated with only a couple of staff around in case there is an issue on match day.

The 'check-in' staff will gradually disappear as the system proves to be reliable.
With the current voucher system the club know how many folks attend by counting them all up (nightmare) but they don't know WHO did or did not attend. I guess there are advantages (admission times/peaks, marketing, etc.) in having this additional info...

That data is massive if used correctly!

That data is massive if used correctly! There's a big flaw in that plan then. We're talking Stoke's marketing department, hardly cutting edge...

A lot will depend on the quality of the system. If they adopt the same approach as they did with the tannoy system then expect trouble. I've been to the COMS a few times and theirs is a bar code reader. They do still have almost as many people around as there would be turnstile operators. Their attendance is almost double ours and I've only seen a problem happen once but it did go "tits up" pretty quickly.

Man City ran operators to swipe tickets for you when it first started at Eastlands.

The card system will end up using facial recognition software, so when a friend goes in your place, there will be a surcharge. Just a thought on things to, maybe come

I hope they aren't swipe cards with a magnetic strip on the back. They can take half a dozen attempts to swipe properly, if at all.
I reckon we'll be using a barcode system like everyone else. The season ticket will have a barcode on, similar to the current membership cards (I'm not sure if gold members got one of these), so you can put the card into a little slot containing the scanner. Anyone with a paper match ticket can then put the barcode on their ticket into the same slot.
For anyone who goes away games (or Wembley if I remember right) this shouldn't be too tricky.
Apparently, though, even though Chelsea have the same barcode slots as everyone else, they also have a touch system for their season tickets, which works in a similar way to the Oyster cards on the tube.

The problem won't be the turnstile it will be the fan using it have u seen some of our lot they make mr bean look like Steve Jobs you will have bank cards, library cards and all sorts going in upside down and back to front before they finally get there ST in the right way round on top of that there number of stewards has increased year on year outside the ground so I fully expect to get searched at least twice every week they might as well get them Walk in x ray jobbies like in total recall for the amount of them they employ

Dont be niaive! The whole reason for these cards is the retail sales on the back of them. It's Quidco for clubs! www.teamcard.co.uk

Good idea, plenty of scope to smooth the operations side of it. Can see card swipers lasting more than a season before it becomes self-sufficient.
