He was actually an ok right back. Am I imagining him playing at RB at home to Man City once? Might've been an FA Cup replay and we won in extra time? Certain Kitson and Tuncay scored. I think it was the league game in the same week. Faye got sent off in the second half so he moved to full back.

It was a good use of what he was good at and tbh he played some football there too. Which I don’t think he did much of centrally. Anyway, yeah let’s hope he’s a better coach than he was a player

His efforts alongside others kept us comfortably in the Premier league. For that he has my respect He was bought to replace Whelan and never could. And Whelan really was just above average. Is it true that Dean Whitehead was signed as Glen Whelan’s “replacement” despite being 2 years older? Whelan was here 2007/08 to 2016/17 Whitehead 2009/10 to 2012/13 In the four seasons they were here together: GW PL games: 25(8) 33 14(15) 29 27(3) 30 31(1) 32 DW PL games: 33(3) 36, 31(6) 37, 24(9) 33 12(14) 26 197(59) 256 PL appearances between them in those four seasons: GW 97(27) 124 DW 100(32) 132 TP judged both as being effective enough to contribute to our stay in the PL…. Looks like he was right…

Started 84% PL games in his first two seasons and 2 in every 3 on average in his 4 years here. Only 20 games out of 152 where he wasn’t involved at all.

As the Oatcake’s own footballing expert (Bayern) concludes an awful professional footballer with about 230 premiership games in a total of over 500 professional appearances to his name. You can’t argue about it. He’s still mourning the loss of his love child was it to the 2nd tier of the Belgian League?

Quite the achievement in 10 years. Tbh have we had one since relegation? Ie do a good job in this league? Burger has flirted with such mythical status.

Regardless of what Bayern thinks a limited footballer is, Whitehead made over 300 top flight appearances you don't do that without having a top level of ability.
To put it in perspective he made 600+ Professional appearances whilst Bayern has made 600+ posts calling him very average

Whitehead was a terrible footballer despite his top flight appearances, he had a great engine but no composure. His party piece which was a constant in his time at Stoke, was to win the ball and then immediately lose it again in a more dangerous position.
….. and yes he did have the odd good game and always gave his all.

Well which ones out of Olofinjana, Diao, Faye, Palacios, Arismendi, Sidwell, Tonge, Soares, van Ginkel, Cameron are you leaping to the defence of? After that you’ve got Zonzi, Whelan and Delap which are the ones he means, then Charlie Adam (I fucking loved him but he was hardly without his critics), Joe Allen who will be forever linked with our execrable decline…. Affelay I suppose you could make a case for but he hardly played really. It’s an entirely uncontroversial point, look beyond the username for once

I long for the days when we fielded shit midfielders like those who made us Premier League fixtures. So yeah it is attention seeking bollocks. As per usual.

I know TP was good but that’s verging on alchemy. If we’re talking relative to the top 4 then yes all our midfielders were crap. If we’re talking relative to what has followed then even Dean Whitehead looks like Roy Keane.

People worrying about Whitehead's coaching abilities based on his playing days, are presumably terrified about the head coach's skills, given he was barely good enough to play for his local Perro & Pato.

I'd be tempted to put Mama Sidibe in good midfielders too.
'Everyone' slagged him because of his scoring record but he spent mush of his time busting a gut chasing the ball in midfield or chasing lost causes and batlling to hold the ball up. Perhaps that's why we got by for 10 years with only 3 midfielders that did a good job.

Afellay most will agree with you. I like Ireland but overall he barely played, had too many bad games and was underused. He didn’t work out here. Lawrence was a winger not a central midfielder. Adam was generally awful but scored the odd cracker.

Apart from if you’re paranoid about agendas and other such shit. That Diao was thrown in there says it all. Afellay most would say was good so I’ll add him as a 4th. But even Adam was argued about something rotten by lots of fans. He was never consistent. And again I associate him with TP losing it.
