His efforts alongside others kept us comfortably in the Premier league. For that he has my respect He was bought to replace Whelan and never could. And Whelan really was just above average. I think Whelan under Hughes was much better than bang average. Whitehead was a good pro but not much of a player like you say. Doesn't necessarily mean he will be a shit coach though, just as a great player doesn't mean great coach. He seems highly thought of with the people who have worked with him anyway. |

I’m with Bayern on this one, Whitehead was bang average at best, and we spent about £5m on him if I recall correctly, some deal for Sunderland. Average I can happily go with, and I wouldn't argue that we overpaid either. That's a lot different than being shit though. The bloke ran his bollocks off for us every week. Players like him deserve a bit more credit and respect IMO. Totally fair, I do respect him for the effort he put in, like so many others at that time, and that is what kept us up. I just don’t want to see a return to that type of football though. |
