*LINK TO POLL** oatcakefanzine.proboards.com/thread/308533/player-seasonPresumably announced before the game tomorrow? Just trying to get a sense of who's in the shake-up as it's another in a long line of seasons where there is not exactly a runaway favourite. Don't suppose you can really give it to the likes of Pearson (12 games) or Hoever (11 games), but there's no rule against it. 2017 Lee Grant 2018 Joe Allen 2019 Jack Butland 2020 James McClean 2021 Nick Powell 2022 Jacob Brown 2023: ??

I forget what years we’ve been back in the championship.
Did Allen win the last prem season and Butland the first champ season?!
How did that happen?

Only Grant actually deserves a 'player of the year' accolade from that list. Maybe McLean too although in that particular season I think Clucas should have won it with a number of very important goals and double figures from midfield. How on earth did Butland ever win one in those years? From 2017 onwards he's been dreadful. This season is another tough one with no obvious consistent season long candidate. Maybe Pearson for his instant impact because I think without him we'd be very much still in the relegation battle. Of the players who have played all season, maybe Fox has been the most consistent? Maybe Laurent, although first half of the season he was out injured for too long. And I rule Sterling out for the same reason. Smallbone was poor in the first half of the season.

Butland’s blooper reel was stunning that season but he had a good month as usually happens and sways the vote.
It’s a pointless award.

My vote goes to Wilmot for this season. If we'd continued our good form from a few weeks ago, I think Campbell and Laurent would've been more involved, and I would've gone for one of those two.

Butland was good in our post-relegation season. He prevented a few more goals than the average Championship goalkeeper but made one or two bad bloopers that led to goals if I remember rightly. It was a time when any individual mistake by one of our players seemed to lead to a goal conceded.

Picking someone who has played well all season is impossible. Of those in the team at the close of the season, I'd say Laurent.

Looks like I voted for Etebo in the 19 season! I can’t even remember him playing for us that season!

Copying from another post, it has to be Brown for me. He's massively underrated.
Player of the Season
As one final note, I'm just going to look at our individual players to work out who should win our player of the season award. I'll use a really quick and lazy metric: which player has the biggest net difference between expected goals scored and conceded when playing vs when not playing? Basically, for every player you look at our expected goals difference per 90 minutes when they are on the pitch compared to when they are off it. As a minimum qualifier, a player has to have appeared for a minimum of 20% of the total minutes this season.
The top five are:
1) Jacob Brown (+0.72 expected goals better off per game)
2) Josh Laurent (+0.53 expected goals better off per game)
3) Dujon Sterling (+0.51 expected goals better off per game)
4) Ben Pearson (+0.36 expected goals better off per game)
5) Ki-Jana Hoever (+0.3 expected goals better off per game)

I thought Wilmot might win it. It'd be a surprise if he didn't win the bulk of them, with Laurent winning maybe a couple of the regional supporters clubs ones?
1 Wilmot 25 2 Laurent 17 3 Campbell 6 4 Pearson 5 5 Smallbone, Fox 3

As has been stated it would be very hard to pick one of the loan players given their amount of matches. Also, as stated, consistency is a keen component in factoring in the correct decision. Therefore there is only one real choice.

He’s been a bit shit. It should be another nail in the coffin for this award. I agree. If I was a member of that playing squad and Ben Wilmot had won player of the season in my team, I'd retire.
