It’s all about opinions though. I think you must watch him with rose coloured glasses on. No I realise a flair player and wingers for that matter drift in and out of the game and some games don’t turn up at all. I do expect more good games than bad. He does frustrate me at times yes but all in all he’s a decent player but a player who is overrated by some. I don’t watch him with rose tinted glasses, I watch the actual game and his contribution - the goals he’s regularly scored and the chances he’s regularly created. Again, Tachyon’s Sentinel piece here backs that up www.stokesentinelCheers .co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/stoke-city-nick-powell-contract-7029699.amp Cheers for the link. I’ll have a look when I get chance

I'm not a WUM. And I don't think they are, I was just saying a lot of Stoke fans don't know a good footballer if one smacked them in the face. There's some Stoke fans don't know a footballer, let alone a good footballer!

I would describe his behaviour on the pitch - going down and staying down, whinging when he doesn't get the fouls he thinks he deserves (some valid, some not), getting wound up and letting it affect his game are all hallmarks of a mardarse. He's the sort of player who gets targeted because it pays off. And its fun to wind up a mardarse. He's still a good player. But I don't like him. Because in my opinion he's a mardarse. And I know a mardarse when I see one. It's patently obvious he's not a mard arse It is not patently obvious at all - it's a matter of observation and interpretation. What he does on the pitch is an observable matter - and he does go down more than most players (because he gets targeted), he doesn't get back up and crack on (he stays down and whinges about being fouled) and he clearly gets wound up when players rough him up (which is why they do it). If you don't see that you are not watching the game and choosing to ignore the way he behaves on the pitch. Arguing about this is fair game because what goes on on the pitch can be observed and measured - the behaviour I describe either happens or it doesn't. And it happens - it's just conveniently ignored who think Powell can do no wrong. The fact that I interpret Powell's behaviour as that of a mardarse is because to me that behaviour is that of a mardarse which is a matter of interpretation of the term "mardarse". Others have observed the same behaviour and have interpreted it as Powell being a shithouse. To me Robert Huth was a shithouse and to me Powell is a mardarse. In this case it's a matter of how you interpret mardarse and shithouse which is fair game for an argument. The thing I picked up Bayern on was that he said not enough people like Powell. It isn't up to Bayern to tell me or anyone else who we can and cannot like - that is purely a matter of opinion. What Bayern did (which is part of his technique for never admitting he's wrong) is to change the focus of the argument from where he is demonstrably wrong (ie I should like Powell) to one where there is legitimate debate (i.e. Powell's behaviour on the pitch and the meaning of the term mardarse). I have seen Powell go down and stay down and whinge about being fouled on many occasions. I believe this behaviour can be interpreted as that of a mardarse. As a result I don't particularly like Powell (but I do recognise he's a good player and want him in the squad). The underlying issue is the tendency for everything on here to be black or white - players are either god's gift or irredeemably shit when in reality they are somewhere in between. The eulogising of Powell is a case in point - it's blasphemy to point out the flaws in his game and a sin not to like him. Good player. Bit of a mararse. Don't particularly like him. Quite happy to burn in hell for having an opinion that the clerics of the Church of Saint Nick have deemed heretical.

I think not liking him is one thing - as you say it's subjective, that stuff bothers some people more than others. I think the real head scratcher is when people (and there are some on this thread, not referring to you) don't rate him. That seems bizarre to me given his obvious and demonstrable contribution since Janaury 2020.

But to overlook his contribution and importance to the team is just plain wrong. He IMO remains our best player and if played as a genuine number ten is one of the best in the division. He's a shithouse ala Jon Walters and I love him for it. He makes things happen. Mardarse ? I ain't having it

I wouldn’t build a team around anyone. I’d build a squad of quality players. It’s you who’s football knowledge is lacking. 😜 Played more than you’ve had hot dinners bud.

When he doesn't get the free kick (which happens lots) and stays lying prone for ages then gets up and is fine That doesn’t happen that often and never actually harms us. depends on how you define 'often' I would venture he has a good lie down in more games than he doesn't Would also venture when he does lie down he regularly doesn't get the free kick as such fail to see how a player lying prone (when nothing wrong with them) is advantageous, the opposite in fact > playing with ten men for 30 seconds+ or so sooner or later is going to bite us on the arse Reminds a bit of Biggins who was constantly & badly diving for penalties but never getting any would be much better if he had tried to score

He does get kicked about. I’m surprised that people would say he doesn’t. He also goes to ground and dives (cheats) a lot/makes more of some contact than I’m sure he feels (which is unsportsmanlike). I don’t like that aspect of Powell, in fact, I hate it. I do really like him as a crucial member of our team.

Agree he's a bit of a mardarse He's more than a a good player at this level though he's one of the best in the division, essential for Stoke He gets the shit kicked out of him. How is he a mardarse? I think your question has already been answered in the original post you are replying to. He does get kicked more than others but he also stays down and moans more than others. Being a mardarse isn't being kicked it's a player's reaction to being kicked. Quite often Powell stays down when he's not hurt but feels aggrieved leaving Stoke playing with 10 men until he decides to get on with it. He also goes down too easily to try to get a foul. Those are the actions of a mardarse. In the playground a mardarse is the child who always moans to the teacher about the way they are treated by other children over even minor things instead of getting on with sorting it themselves in a responsible way. Replace child with footballer and teacher with referee and you have Powell. Doesn't mean he's not the best footballer at the club nor that he's not kicked nor that I don't like him.

I don’t like seeing us do it. We do it plenty. The amount of times Powell will roll around like he’s been shot after being kicked on the shin (pad), hobble off to the side, then sprint back on is infuriating to me. I hate seeing that and I don’t know why you would advocate for us to cheat more. They’re grown men at the end of the day. They should carry themselves with more pride. It’s one of the reasons why it isn’t watched as much in the US. In my opinion, going down to contact when you could comfortably stay on your feet, is diving.

He does get kicked a lot and the opposition knows they can wind up. However, he generally stays under control which is to his credit. He does seem to stay down longer than most but I willing to give him the benefit of doubt and believe it’s either to make a point to the ref or he genuinely has a low pain threshold. He also gets injured often (he signed for Stoke while injured and it was a long time before he recovered sufficiently to be eligible). Therefore, staying down longer than most may also be based on the fear that it’s another bad injury. In my opinion he is only one or two premier league standard players left at Stoke and we’re lucky to have him. He showed he’s in a different class than the others when he came on in the second half last week. He can also play WELL in more than one position. Several of Stoke’s can play in more than position, but they can only play well in one of them.
