Was presuming it's Sawyers or Vrancic? Would explain delay re Vrancic Possible - If that's the case, he'd presumably go for Sawyers when he becomes available and say adios to Mario. But equally possible he's hit the required number of games to trigger the extra year, and it's just gone unmentioned. Time will tell - but I really can't see the point of having Powell, Sawyers AND Vrancic, when we need other types of midfielders. At the moment, we could very well end up with all three - but, at the same time, we could end up with none of them! Sawyers appears to have choice between Albion & Stoke (& probbaly others too) If he chooses not to come here then Vranic signs again?

I doubt Sawyers will even get the option of West Brom. I don't think they'll offer him anything. They seem to be looking elsewhere. And if we offer him anything, I think we'd be his favoured destination, whether that's sensible from us is another matter. If Vrancic has the extra year, I think it's because it's already been triggered. If we had the choice, I can't see us offering him an extra 12 months unless we were contractually obliged to, based on the way his season tapered out, with his 33rd birthday coming up next week

They've got until this week to decide whether to trigger the extra 12 months on his current deal, which will be massively more than he's worth in the current wage environment. He was quoted as saying he was an option or something like that, I think. Nothing definitive. Suppose they could offer him something on reduced terms - but it seems they're looking at people like Swift and Rothwell, so I'd be surprised.

Don't think he was quite that explicit. He made some polite noises about him and said it was a possibility.

If we're reluctant to just take the straightforward option of triggering Powell's extra 12 months, it sounds like we're having to watch the pennies, like the rest of the division. Maybe top Bosmans like Swift and Rothwell are a parachute club-only option? If the likes of Sheff Utd, Forest and WBA are in (and maybe the odd promoted club like Bournemouth?), hard to see us being that attractive anyway in that kind of race?

So you’re basing him being ‘increasingly injury prone’ entirely on this season, when his longest time out was due to a broken leg? Lots of smaller time outs in addition to the leg injury though. If we're reliant on him for a promotion challenge then we will struggle. Probably because it isn't that easy to come straight back from a big injury, there's always going to be other niggles as other parts of the body try to pick up the slack. To suggest he's injury prone because of this season is moronic, he's a hugely important player for us that's been unlucky this season that's all.

So the plan is pay double the going rate for a player whose appearance record for us is one in two and build our promotion push around him? Apart from pissing off the rest of the squad, putting us at risk of falling foul of FFP, employing a tactic that only works when a particular player with a shit attendance record is on the pitch and adopting a tactic honed in Sunday League football when having the opposition half pissed from the night before and the goalkeeper chucking up last night's kebab behind the goal doesn't tend to happen what can possibly go wrong? One in two? That's as daft as the pay him double comment 85 appearances out of a possible 138. Ok more than 1 in 2 but nowhere near enough to even consider building a team around - which is a terrible idea anyway at this level regardless of the player we are talking about.

Now that Powell has been retained, we will need to play him at centre forward, ... and sign up a specialist free kick taker. Every one else in defence.

The feeling that Nick Powell is now our most creative player and likely catalyst to us having any success, just demonstrates how far we have fallen in the last few years.

If Powell ends up playing well and being our 3rd/4th best player, we're in business. If Powell is your best player then you're not getting out of the championship.
Not because Powell isn't good, but he isn't good enough to carry a team. He needs at least 2 players to step up and feed off him, and he also needs to play 40 games

Baker should run him close and if Harry gets fit, there's no reason why he can't have a stellar season. And then there's our new 20 goal a season striker...
