Evil Dead Rise was the choice last night… I don’t often see horror movies at the cinema as I hate the sensation of being jump scared.
But I’m a fan of the classic movies like Elm Street, Halloween, Friday the 13th & the original Evil Dead trilogy (remake was crap).
This was a good addition to the original’s & had plenty of Easter Eggs to the originals but also plenty of gore. If you are a fan of horror or the ED movies it’s worth a watch.
There’s no link to the originals so it’s not like you need to catch up prior. 7/10

Frome best to least best:
The Banshees of Inisherin: fantastic. Film of the decade so far.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie: loved it.
Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves: enjoyed this too.
Happening: excellent French film based on a true story of a woman trying to get an abortion in the 1960s, when abortion was illegal. Included one of the toughest scenes I've watched, and it only showed the actor's face.
Thelma: good psycho thriller.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness: great fun.
Parallel Mothers: another excellent Spanish-language film starring Penélope Cruz.
Living: another good film.
Plane: ridiculous and enjoyable action film. There was a power cut at Vue, and we had to finish watching it another day.
Josee, the Tiger and the Fish: sweet anime.
Official Competition: Penélope Cruz again, this time playing an eccentric film director.
Surge: Ben Whishaw is great as a man having a breakdown and going on a bender around London.
Everything Everywhere All at Once: fine, but I don't get the hype. Mad films and multiverses are trendy, it seems.
Lamb: weird Icelandic film that dragged a bit.
Please Baby Please: pants after an intriguing start.

Watched a decent film the other day, not sure if anyone else has seen it. About a giant man eating Shark, Jaws I think it was called, recommend it 👌

Watched Tetris on Apple TV the other day and thought it was a very good watch. Recommend it. Plus if you've a PlayStation you get 3 months free trial.

Went to see John Wick 4 last night. If you are a fan of the previous movies then this is a must see, the action scenes are shot beautifully, one reminded me of a shooter video game. Nearly 3 hours long but goes pretty quick, and there is an additional end credit scene. Highly recommended & a stellar cast 8/10 The Warriors tribute did it for me. Wick 1 and 4 are the best. Have you seen they're attempting a series? I'm not a cinematic universe type person but I'd like to see the characters across these films expanded.

Yeh the series is based on the early days of the continental. There’s also a spin off movie involving a female character from JW3 (I think). Talking of spin off series, The Penguin series based on the Colin Farrells character in the latest Batman movie.. looks very good as well.

The Strays (Netflix) 5/10
A bit like a cross between a Jordan Peele film if he made one in the UK with a bit of Harlan Coben thrown in. Ends with a tame home invasion sequence

The Covenant on Amazon, a Guy Ritchie movie.
The best film I've seen in an awful long time, ramps up the tension expertly. Nothing cartoonist about it.
A serious film, about a serious subject, with a serious message.
Outstanding in my opinion.

Eagerly anticipated watching Disney + streaming the new Avatar movie.
So last night nice bottle of wine, snacks/nibbles, wife firmly told/agreed not to ask me stupid questions about the film and told not to complain about the volume level from the Sound bar. (Didn’t agree and moaned throughout)
Err, it’s pretty “Pants”...
Exactly the same as the last film but they now live by the sea,
Personally it’s three hours wasted and rate a generous 4/10

Smile
Much better than expected. I actually thought this was going to be a Blumhouse-style mess with crappy face filters and an Abercrombie & Fitch cast similar to Truth or Dare, but it was more similar to It Follows and Drag Me to Hell- and superior to those two as well. There are some creepy moments throughout and they don't overdo the smile aspect which makes it more effective when it happens. There's an unexpected nod to Alien 3 in one shot too, which I liked.
Watched Evil Dead Rise the day before and I actually preferred Smile, when I expected it to be the other way round.

Barbie - garbage Oppenheimer - fantastic
I’m going to stick my neck out here - Margot Robbie is overrated.
Cillian Murphy is excellent. For somebody who is so recognisable as both himself and as an iconic character (Tommy Shelby) that he has played, it was incredible how I completely forgot I was watching Cillian Murphy and was entirely convinced I was watching Robert Oppenheimer.
Barbie just felt like watching a load of actors doing a SNL sketch.

Oppenheimer is superb. Best I’ve seen in ages. Tip ( not a spoiler ). The colour sequences - all true. B and W - justifiable interpretation. No matter, it is astonishing and the last line is a killer. Go watch on big screen.

From best to worst of recent watches:
Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One I could be critical of a couple of things but when action is this much fun and such a spectacle, I just enjoy the ride. Looking forward to Part Two (and at least this said "Part One" in the title unlike Across the Spider-Verse.
Blindspotting Comedy crime drama with one of the most tense closing scenes I've seen.
Save the Cinema Feel-good film based on a true story about a Welsh cinema threatened with demolition in the 90s.
The Flash Enjoyable superhero watch.
My Neighbor Adolf Dark comedy about a Jewish guy who thinks Hitler isn't really dead and has moved in next door. Not sure if it's based on a true story, but it seemed plausible.
Where the Crawdads Sing Good mystery/romance.
The Lost City A real surprise - a very funny first half and decent second half. Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum were very funny and there was a great cameo.
Last Night in Soho A bit hit and miss but enjoyed it overall.
Chappie AI police robot goes rogue. Good film, good fun. Not sure why it got panned.
Brian and Charles Lonely inventor guy builds a robot. Funny opening and end but mostly dragged in between.
Across the Spider-Verse All over the place, seemed like it was trying too hard to be cool, I couldn't hear some of the dialogue (especially from the British punk guy) and just as things were getting interesting, it ended and was only part one. It seems I'm in the minority in finding this one boring.
I'll see Oppenheimer next weekend.

Saw all the Mission Impossible 3 up to Dead Reckoning last week, DR is my favourite so far in the franchise, might have something to do with Hayley Atwell 😉
Friday went to see Oppenheimer, I was a little bit underwhelmed during the movie, but probably the last hour was more interesting, loved the cameo of President Truman. Certainly if I had watched it at home, I would have become disinterested.
Looking forward to Dune part 2 but other than that not much else to get excited about.
Re Spider Man Across the spider verse, I fell asleep 5mins in and walked out before the end, as I didn’t have a clue what was going on lol.
