Watched DOWNFALL: The case against Boeing, last night on Netflix. It was an eyeopener about how corporate greed was prepared to kill hundreds of people to keep their stock market price high and bypass all safety regulations by skullduggery. I can't say I enjoyed it because of the content but it was an eye opener about how how crooks work. 1 1/2 hours but well worth a watch. OS. I don't remember which country (somewhere in Central Europe), but the government were going to ban cigarettes decades ago. One of the massive tobacco companies commissioned a study that showed the government made more money from taxes than was lost on healthcare for smoking-related issues. I think it even mentioned money was saved because more people died younger. The conclusion was the government would lose money if smoking was banned. Smoking of course, was not banned.

Went to see the latest Avatar (Way of The Water) last night, some of the visuals were stunning, but it felt like I was watching a PS5 game at times. There were some good scenes but thought it was ok nothing amazing.
Would I watch it again (especially at home)? I doubt it, 6/10 & mostly because of the 3D visuals.

The visuals were great but the narrative and execution was lazy, childish, and largely cringey. Not a film I could recommend (my mate told me he considered asking me if I wanted to leave after 30mins....of a 3h 20m film!) but I did enjoy seeing an alien reef in 3d. The film could've easily been edited down to 2h though and I suspect it would've been better for it. Even the aliens/alien world in avatar though is quite unimaginative. Everything there is just a version of something here (which might turn out to be how alien worlds mostly look due to convergent evolution) but it's always disappointing when creative depictions of intelligent aliens are so human. The Navi are basically just tall, blue native-americans. And then you have those floating islands which defy physics; which to me almost feels like cheap compensation for the lack of imagination otherwise, in that they just randomly throw in impossibilities to try to blow your mind that way... Contrast the navi with the species from arrival which were truly alien, both in appearance and means of communication. I get that avatar is a family film and arrival is targeted at adults, but I can't help comparing. Arrival is a seriously smart, beautiful film that I would recommend in a heartbeat. Basically independence day for the thinking man.

Not seen arrival so I’ll have to check it out, I think Amy Adams is in it? 😏

8/10: The Farewell is an excellent Chinese/American film about a culture clash between the Chinese and American-living side of the family. Lots of subtley including the humour. The cinematography was some of my favourite I've seen - loads of scenes and shots I would've loved to have called a photograph of mine.
Klaus, an animated Netfilx film, is a good Christmas film.
Happy Death Day a fun comedy horror.
The Life Ahead: an excellent Sophia Loren takes in a wayward kid.
A Whisker Away is a good anime with obvious Hayao Miyazaki inspirations.
7/10 I Am Mother a decent claustrophic sci-fi, kind of a cross between Moon and Ex Machina but certainly not as great as Moon.
I Don't Feel at Home in This World Anymore is an odd but interesting black crime comedy starring Elijah Wood.
The Young Offenders is a fun and occasionally moving comedy about two teens who cycle across Ireland to find a missing €7m bail of cocaine (based around the actual real-life event).
The Girls is a bit of an odd Swedish film about three women living their lives based on a play they're performing. As a feminist film, it must've been very ahead of its time in the 60s.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever didn't have anything to make it memorable but was enjoyable enough.
Okja is a mad South Korean/American film about a girl and a giant GM pig. More countries should take a leaf of out South Korean film-makers books.

I work in aerospace as a QM so i not only watched this I also downloaded the senate hearings into it to read, how Boeing have survived this without paying out billions I’m don’t know. I’m pretty sure there is a US military version of the same plane which they fitted more safety features on as price was no object and it was a system insisted on by the air force. Everything they did was to catch up with Airbus and it’s just thrown them further behind

Pinocchio on Netfilx is excellent. Watched it a couple of days ago... still find those kind of endings sad...like the snowman. That's not a spoiler alert. He doesn't melt.

It really is excellent. Series Three the final one airs in the new year. Seriously recommend it.

Does the big nosed wee bastard nick Geppetto's Irn Bru too the wooden rickety twat? Watched Glass Onion - it's like having a really good shag where it's going to make the top 10 list ever and on pulling out your expecting a big impressive finale only for it to dribble out your jap eye with a pfft before pooling in your pubes. Thought we were on for a modern masterpiece and a reworking of Agatha Christie's 'Ten little (insert racial slur)' but the end was like they aborted it half way through and came up with a right load of old bollocks instead.

Watched the 'Banshees of Innisherrin' on Disney Plus last night. Been looking forward to this for a while as I am a massive fan of 'In Bruges' also starring Brendan Gleeson & Colin Farrell.
The film itself is not one for fans of adventure/action thrillers but it's a great, albeit slow paced tale set on a remote island off the coast of Ireland in the 1920's.
The interaction between Gleeson & Farrell is as good as it was in 'In Bruges' & there are some fine supporting performances with plenty of laughs along the way.
Overall it was a very enjoyable way to spend a couple of hours in front of a roaring fire with a glass of Leffe in hand & I would definitely recommend it, especially for the older Stokies who appreciate the Gone Fishing/Detectorists type of programme !

I haven't seen the Banshees yet but it's definitely on my list. As well as the excellent In Bruges, he's also responsible for Seven Psychopaths and Three Billboards outside Ebbing Missouri, both of which are fantastic films.

I saw Violent Night, awful film & almost fell asleep during it. Randomly starts in Bristol then over to the US. I thought it was okay, and the Home Alone spoof provided laughs. Same. I grabbed a couple of beers with a mate before going in and we both enjoyed it because it knows it's being stupid.

Thankfully I went to watch it at the Festival Park Odeon, so I didn't pay through the nose. The visuals are amazing but it cannot save the film from it's clunky, confused storyline. I am being generous giving it 2/10.

Watched Glass Onion today after returning home for Christmas.
3 stars out of 5 for me.
Thought it was thoroughly entertaining for the first 3/4 then just got a bit daft. I’m also getting a bit bored of satire on the super wealthy. Succession started the trend a few years back and set a pretty high bar in terms of quality.

Avatar Way of the Water: it didn't need to be so long, but it looked spectacular, and the fight scenes added variety.

I watched the horror flick Barbarian on Saturday, started off well then just went silly in the second part. 5/10
I’m off to see Babylon on Friday, which I’m looking forward to seeing even if it is just over 3hrs long.

The Menu - a strange one. Seems to be a satire of pretentious restaurants and obsessive, Michelin star chasing chefs.
Felt like an episode of The Trip if it had been directed by Ari Aster (Midsommar)

Barbarian, more holes in the plot than Stoke's defence: Who built the tunnels? Did Andy Dufresne pop round? Why was that vagrant hanging about on his own if he knew a crazy, super strong inbred came out at night? Why didn't the creature attack anyone who stayed in the house- such as the owner or anyone else who rented? Where did she get her strength from if she was malnourished- or her ability to drop off a roof faster than someone pushed before her? Surely the police and authorities must have known something weird was happening there, so why ignore it- especially when the job interview girl approached them? It's not like all of this was happening in the middle of nowhere I get that you need to allow for internal logic but this was just daft!

The first half seemed creepy, but at that half way point, I fully agree to all of the above. The other thing as well if you saw the contents in the basement, even before the tunnel, you be long gone.

I went to see Babylon last night starting Margot Robbie, Brad Pitt, Diego Calva.
For just over 3hrs I enjoyed it, yeh it possibly could have been a little shorter. It seemed not to do well in the states and had poor box office sales.
But as a movie fan, I found it enjoyable, touching, funny in places. Robbie was off the charts as per usual. The opening is nuts lol. If you like the trailer, I recommend it. 7/10
