I watched The Context on BBC news last night, which is presented by the brilliant and personable Christian Frazer. He's a very clever lad and even though he's made his way to the top of his profession, he's always proud of his Burnley roots. Last night he was joking with the panel about his support for the club he loves - Burnley, and they got talking about a film called 'Bank of Dave', which is on Netflix. So last night I watched it. It was as good as Christian said it was and I absolutely loved it. It's about a successful bloke from Burnley, who is a real philanthropist, who decides to start his own bank. To do that he has to battle with 'The Banker Establishment' in london, who try to break him because they don't want 'bloody northerners' encroaching on established territory. The film is clever, witty, amusing, sometimes sad, and just down to earth lovely. It's also romantic in a very amusing way and you can't help but fall in love with the characters. I'll give it a good 9/10 and will definitely watch it again if I'm at a loose end. Highly recommended.
OS.

I thought it was a bit lame & really cheesy, the 20 something posh(ish)London banker being into Def Leppard was not believable, the posh Londoners were one dimensional still watched it mind/seen worse/didn't do any harm 6.5/ 10

Had it not used poetic licence it would have been like watching a documentary because the background story is actually true. OS.

Saint Maud 8/10
Dark British psychological horror. In essence- religion and mental illness are the same. I'm not giving anything away by saying the main character is as nutty as a fruitcake

Went to see Ant Man (Quantumania) last night..
Since Avengers Endgame, Marvel films have been poor, average or ok, including some of the tv shows.
I enjoyed the latest Ant Man, and it’s definitely the beginning of phase 5, if you are a fan of marvel comics & movies then I definitely recommend it. 7/10

BAFTAs tonight. Looking forward to tuning in, especially with Alison Hammond hosting. She’ll no doubt be a laugh going toe to toe with the good and the great of the industry.
Best Film - Everything Everywhere All At Once (Banshees for me) Best British Film - Banshees Best Actor - Colin Farrell (Paul Mescal for me) Best Actress - Cate Blanchett Supporting Actor - tough category this, Barry Keoghan was excellent, would be ace to see Ke Huy Quan win it, and I really loved Eddie Redmayne in The Good Nurse. Supporting Actress - Jamie Lee Curtis or Angela Bassett
Martin McDonagh will clean up the rest as he always does.

Not as good as his best stuff imo, but Gleeson and Farrell were as reliably good as always. Seven Psychopaths still the pick of the bunch for me. Barry Keoghan was excellent so I'd like to see him win. Watched The Whale recently too. Brendan Fraser of The Mummy fame playing a very different kind of role. Quite a claustrophobic film in a number of ways but good. Not a feel good film though.

Stoke-on-Trent got a mention in Martin McDonagh’s speech.
Apparently the donkey in Inisherin was from Stoke!

Last night I took the advantage of my limitless card and did a double bill.
First off Creed 3…. Sylvester Stallone has publicly fallen out with the producer over the rights to Rocky, so basically he’s hardly mentioned in the movie. It’s not a bad movie but personally I think it’s the weakest of Creed movies. If you are a fan, it’s a worth a big screen outing but I felt that Rocky was missed. 6/10
Film 2… Cocaine Bear, I wasn’t too bothered about going but as it’s not costing me anything extra I thought I’d see it. It’s daft and could easily be a straight to video release lol
Funny in parts and you have to leave your brain at home to enjoy it. Best thing about it (and Creed) was seeing the trailers for Scream 6, John Wick 4, Guardians etc 5/10.
Sad to hear about Tom Sizemore passing away, a fallen actor (drugs) but was awesome in True Romance.

Finally got round to watching the Elvis film. Really enjoyed it. Thought it got better as it went on and thought the Vegas stuff onwards was great (and very accurate)
7.5/10

Luther: The Fallen Sun You don't need to watch the series (although there are a few references). It's OK, they seemed to borrow elements from Hostel for the villain's motive. Personally just watch the series which did the same thing better with a fraction of the budget, more creepier villains and less plot holes.
Fall 2 girls climb a 2,000 foot radio tower (the equivalent of 2 Eiffel Towers stacked up) and get stuck. If you don't like heights (like me) you'll get a bit clammy

Watched Scream 6 last week.
Silly, funny and ridiculous ending. You either like the ‘franchise’ for what it is or you don’t I suppose.
It’s difficult because the original was really clever, and the others haven’t quite lived up to that. They are all still massively entertaining though in my eyes. Haven’t seen Scream 5 though mind you.
There was a few bits of Scream 6 I fundamentally thought were stupid, in terms of who and who didn’t get killed off.

Saw 65 the other night, it wasn’t awful but it could have been loads better than the movie that was realised.
The effects looked a little too CGI, definitely I wouldn’t go out my way to see it again. 4.5/10

Killers in both are a bit predictable but that might be part of it.

Don’t know how you couldn’t sit in the cinema and be entertained by it. They definitely should have been braver with killing people off. One character in particular got stabbed about twenty times and still managed to survive.

Two films I've watched recently that I'd recommend Call Jane, an excellent film about illegal abortion.
And
Where the Crawdads sing, another excellent film.

Kermode is a horror fan but I find he rarely goes into things with an open mind anymore and that his mind is made up before he's sat down. First Scream was excellent imo and breathed new life into the genre. Agree none of the sequels have been in the same league, but the new one is well done and has some really effective scenes.

The latest Scream is in parts really clever, as all of them try to be, in casting a look at the ironic 'rules' the sequels and franchises. It doesn't quite deliver on breaking its own rules which stopped prevented it from being great for me.

Went to see John Wick 4 last night. If you are a fan of the previous movies then this is a must see, the action scenes are shot beautifully, one reminded me of a shooter video game. Nearly 3 hours long but goes pretty quick, and there is an additional end credit scene.
Highly recommended & a stellar cast 8/10
