If hes money motivated, get him gone, and get another good midfielder in Footballer...money motivated....never!!!....wherever did you get that idea? Good job the rest of the squad couldn't care less about what they earn!!

GEL 🤣 Think you need to higher your standards Naaa I’m good thanks, I have pretty high standards of people, their work ethic and efficiency…. I just also like to give credit where it is due. So are you upset that we didn’t actually get relegated to L1 when he took over? You frustrated that last season we didn’t take the league by storm, win a cup final and start looking at the prem and Europe next season…..? Think you might need to get a bit realistic as to what and who we are and maybe lowers your champions league expectations…. 😉 Glad your good. My expectations are only a bit above yours. Don’t know where you get this idea that Stoke fans who want a bit more are wanting our team to get relegated. I know where we are at and it’s not in a great place but last year could have been better for a few reasons like negative team selections not playing a average cousins over a poor Mikel. Poor subs. Letting vokes take a pen when only been on field 5 mins the list goes on. MON is not a footballing genius he makes mistakes and doesn’t learn from them.

Seems to be reported as a free transfer, 1-yr deal.
It'll be interesting to see how we phrase the news on the official site.
Can only assume it must've still been open to him to opt out of the extra year here?

Didn't he just sign a new one year contract with us?? his contract extension was triggered, he appears to have changed his mind presumably being offered lots more $$£$£$£ It might just be that Mikel has decided that he is getting a bit old for the slog of a Championship season and somewhere the game is less intense and the weather a bit warmer might be a bit more to his liking.

This feels like one hell of a rebuild to me. It could take a while for everyone to gel again. Hmmmmm. If finishing 14th or lower is the result of a ‘gelled’ squad then I don’t think that’s a major concern. Maybe. Had hoped we might be aiming to do something next season but the amount of sales and cost slashing makes me think it’s more of a reset like someone else has said. I don’t mind if it works long term, but people are already (not me) moaning about MON. If he’s got to add another 10 players to his squad, it’s not a straightforward process to get them all integrated and playing. I know some of the wasters needed fucking off and we need to save money, but I don’t find it particularly encouraging.

What was I missing on those occasions where he was completely awol while we were getting done in midfield? I’d even suggest his best work was done in our attacking third and it was really surprising. Defensively he was awful on the whole. Needed to play with Cousins covering.

For 50 minutes of most games Mikel would look a class player, but then usually run totally out of gas. I can’t see that he would be any different when he is one year older. It doesn’t appear that his wages were astronomical, but will we miss him? It really depends what MO’n has in the way of plan B( if he had one at all)for the absence of Mikel. We finished 14th with him, so I’m not sure that we’d do any better keeping him; are we likely to be worse if he leaves- I reckon that we will be anywhere between 12th and 19th with what we currently have (and I seriously don’t expect Campbell to play before February 22, only because of the total lack of positive news we’ve heard!)

Superb vision and passing on form. Showed glimpses of a completely different class of player than anyone else we had. But his legs had gone and playing him so much was totally unsustainable.

At the end of the day, encouraging or not, we are where we are and it's all down to the decisions the club have made over the last 5 years or more. Trying to be cute in the PL. Keeping Hughes too long. Botching his replacement. Employing a no mark in the Championship and giving him a mega bounty. Asking an inexperienced manager from the lower leagues to sort it all out. We've spent huge money on utter shit and have gone through 5 managers since January 2018. I'd say as much as we deserve to be where we are, i'd go further and say some people at the top end of the club need the reality check that comes with it.

How many new midfielder's do you think we need now Mikel has gone?. Surely neither nor Clucas will leave now, although we need 'legs' in midfield now more than ever.

Can’t do a link but if you go on the mine site where it says retained list it says we activated the contract extension that was 1st of June. If he is not wanting it now and wants to go he can payback last months wage

“Although John triggered the second year of his contract, we always had an agreement in place whereby we would let him leave if a significant overseas opportunity came along.
“John is a fantastic professional and was a huge presence for us last season both on and off the field, particularly with the young players in our first-team squad.
“I really enjoyed working with him and would like to take this opportunity to thank him for his contribution and wish him every success for the future.”

Another one off the books.
This clear out should have happened the moment we dropped down.
For what it’s worth Mikel was crap, a long way past his heyday.

Get Besic in for a year as his replacement then This is a no-brainer surely. A strong and technical CDM like him is something we’ve been crying out for years. He’s only 28 and on a free. Get him in quick!!

As I've said earlier in this thread, letting Cousins go was a poor decision because now we've lost cover for his position if we fail to find a replacement or the replacement we sign turns out to be terrible.
