Poch laughed off suggestions that they’d need to sell Mbappe if they wanted to sign Messi Aye, potentially because otherwise Real could have their pants down with the price. It's football, someone saying something doesn't mean it's true.

Currently crying his eyes out in Barcelona exit press conference If it's so hard he could play for Barcelona and get a nominal fee. Or perhaps play for free. He's got more money than he'll ever need.

It’s a good point. If Barcelona mean that much to you, agree a salary that allows you to stay. It’s not like he’ll be struggling to pay his rent this month.

This. It's absolute bollocks. He's taken hundreds of millions in wages from that club. Put your money where your mouth is or stop blubbering and leave the tears to those who actually have something to cry about. He's talking about how his young family don't want to leave their home in Barcelona like he is being deported against his will.

I see he's blaming La Liga for forcing him out, just exactly what Barca want to try and force them to do a you turn.

"I love this club more than anything else in the world" *except one last pay cheque Why would he play for free? It’s stupid to suggest that he should. He was willing to take a 50% pay cut to stay. That shows love. Just as we all do, footballers have debts. I’m sure he has things like mortgages that are well within the cost of his salary. Why dip into savings to pay them off? Still, I think he’s a coward for going to PSG (if he does). It’s an easy team to win a league with and be able to say, “look I’ve done it elsewhere also”.

His 50% pay cut was from £500k to £250k per week and was for 5 year. It would still have left him as one of the highest paid players in the world. Hardly put him into the pauper class If he was that desperate to stay at Barcelona I am sure there would have reached a deal on a pitiful £100k per week over say 2 years.

PSG have booked the Eiffel Tower for Tuesday, sparking rumours that Lionel Messi's unveiling could take place in the heart of the French capital. PSG also used the landmark to confirm their signing of Neymar in 2017.

He’d already agreed to a wage cut of 50% and he couldn’t play for free, even if he wanted to, that’s how bad their accounts are. With or without his salary, their wage to turnover ratio is a disaster so he can’t be registered under any circumstance.

Maybe he has a financial plan for his future and the future of his children/grandchildren and while he loves his club, he understands he has one final contract and he should put himself and his family first? Can he not be upset that he’s leaving the club and city he’s called home for most of his life and yet still be level-headed enough to ensure the security of his and his family’s future? Shawcross was on 50-60k here for example, so 100k for one of the best of all time seems a bit crazy.

PSG also used the landmark to confirm their signing of Neymar in 2017. It's all pointing one way. Unfortunately Can you imagine the meltdown on here if the club received no fee for the world's greatest player. Barca have also fucked up big time to not get any fee to climb out of their financial hole. Even a 12 month contract last year with a buyout but they chose to run it down too. Even at his age he could have got them £100m they've made Tony Scholes look like Jeff Bezos so they blame La Liga.

The politics brinkmanship and greed behind the scenes are there for all to see. After the failed European league Real and Barca were left holding their cocks. They then chose to negotiate with La Liga and take a chunk of CVC investment. To say they couldn't keep Messi is just garbage. The gangsters running those two clubs are just plain liars. Joan Laporta stood by Florentino Perez and Super League over Lionel Messi. www.football-espana.net/2021/08/06/joan-laporta-super-league-messi

If I was worth hundreds of millions. If the club I loved wasn't in a position to give me what I wanted. If the thought of leaving reduced me to tears. If I knew that in retirement my earning potential would continue.... I'd play for free.

If I knew that in retirement my earning potential would continue.... I'd play for free. It’s nice to live in hypotheticals though isn’t it. I frequently like to consider myself as a candidate for martyrdom too, if only the conditions were there for me to achieve it. Martyrdom is one thing. Playing for one one of the world's biggest football clubs, idolised by millions, whilst living in a mansion is hardly an emblem of persecution

Just save us all the emotional crap and talk of his poor family being forced out of Barcelona. Save us the blaming of La Liga. He has earned 500 million in just the last 5 years in wages alone, probably the same again in endorsements, if it was so important for his family to stay in Barcelona he could have made it happen. He has decided that money is more important and that's his right. Make no mistake though, he has chosen the almighty dollar over his love for the club.

Messi couldn't sign for Barcelona even on minnimum wage. They've been prevented from registering new players by La Liga. They still have ages to trim their squad. If they don't they will also lose Aguero and Depay as they won't be able to register them. I'm guessing they will be registered by the time the La Liga season starts and Messi could have been too.

Agreed. Plus, even if he plays for free, he'll still be raking in millions every year with endorsements/sponsorships/social media etc. etc. anyway. Players at that level are not just earning their annual income from club wages nowadays.
