One of, if not the most ridiculous threads I have ever read on here. We had 10 years of Premiership football, that created memories that whole family’s of Stoke fans will treasure forever and you call it mediocre. I honestly hate to think where we would be without Coates. We would have probably just finished 10 mediocre seasons in the lower end of the Championship. Sack Pulis the fans said, they did. Sack Hughes the fans said, they did. Appoint Rowett the fans said, they did. Sack Rowett the fans said, they did. Why don't you think where we will be with Coates.... League 1 AGAIN under his ownership. He simply has to change his ways.

Seriously anybody who want the Coated family to sell obviously does not understand:
1. The money they have pumped into the club 2. Wigan's current situation 3. The role of a board , it does not manage the business.
Their only failure is not sacking Scholes and not supporting Pullis.
As a board you hire a CEO to run the business, Scholes has presided over the recruitment policy that has sent us from a FA cup final to looking squarely in the eyes of the old 3rd division.
Yes I am pissed off the Coate's family had not sent Scholes on his merry way and any player who was associated with the abysimal performance on Tuesday.
But
They are great owners of the club and great people for the city itself .
Don't forget the $10 million They gave to Stoke hospital.
I don't live in city no more , I live 12000 miles away but I am a Stoke at heart , come back every year to watch the boys play, watch them play on the stream every game and we could never have better owners.
We could have better and more committed players.
Sorry for the rant and the spelling and the bad grammar but I have had a few beers and it is 10pm here.

I can’t see what all the fuss is about...
There’s a well tested policy in place whereby we watch potential targets 3284 times and take a long hard look at his character long before we go anywhere near them, oh and he’s got to be better than what we have and provide competition.
In reality we totally rely on any old shit, put them on insane long term contracts, play them a few times before dropping them, then send them out on loan and “still” paying a large percentage of their insanely large salaries for the next 235 years, oh small matter we make the teams they go out on loan better (brilliant strategy)
I honestly don’t give a shit what Coates and his hobbit looking son do next

Also Pulis was backed and so was Hughes and the standard of football under the latter in his first 3 years was as good as we’ve ever seen. In my view it went wrong by keeping an increasingly disinterested Hughes beyond the 4th year and not looking wider than bog standard British managers for his replacement. Appointing Lambert was an absolute joke of a decision that compounded keeping with Hughes too long. We’d have more likely stayed in the Prem by keeping Hughes than going for someone like Lambert that’s how diabolical a decision it was! How Scholes has survived every other diabolical recruitment of players and managers since (up to MoN who I think is the only chink of light at the moment) is truly astounding! BM

BM I'm not sure they fully backed Pulis in the end. Seemed to me they put Carto ahead of Pulis which in my opinion was a catastrophic decision. I mean who has done more for the club when you look back at it. It all boils down to the fact the senior management has been over protected through blind loyalty for "the boys". Its not how a proper club is run and hence we are where we are. We need a full restructure upstairs and to start acting like a 21st century club instead of one stuck in the 90s.

It will be very interesting, if the unthinkable happens and we get relegated, what the board come out and say then, it would be hard to trot out the same stuff as they did when we got relegated from the premiership?. Surely..

I think our owners have done all they can in the best interest of the club. Unfortunately mistakes are made in football as in life in general. I still back our owners as I think they want the best for us, as they are supporters themselves, and they will take us back to the promised land again. I'm sure they will!

peter coates is stoke through and through he is hurting like the rest,i think the job is to big for johnathan coates he should take a place in the background somewhere. scholes as had it time at the club and wants outing. i would find a job for pulis he is stoke through and through, get all the high earners off the wage bill and start again. we will come back from the mess we are in,just get people in the club who no what we are all about. people on here have slated tony pulis in the past for me the guy did a fantastic job and we would not be in this position now with him in our club. you can say the football was shit, but all the big clubs feared comming, now even the likes of barnsley hull and luton dont,

Not until they get some proper people in upstairs to run the club. JC and TS can't hack it. 4 years of rapid decline proves it. If you can't see that now then you never will until perhaps we are dropping out of the football league. Then you might come to your senses, maybe.

So the mantra now is foreign ownership is bad because of Wigan?
For every 'Wigan', I raise you Peter Ridsdale or Karl Oyston. And I'm sure Wolves fans are pining for the Bhatti Brothers to come back and rescue them from those bloody Chinese!

I haven't said a word about foreign ownership, I want the Coates family to stay in charge! I really love us having local owners who care about the club, not people who just want to play with their money and back out as soon as things are looking bad. The Coates family every time for me!

Absurd to even think of any but the Coates' in charge.
We are so lucky to have them. 99% of other teams and their fans would jump at the chance to have local born billionaire fans as owners.

Wigan Athletic was sold to Hong Kong investors on 4th June. One month later the promised cash has not come into the club and it is in administration, and may be relegated. They’ve made many mistakes, but the Coates family has the financial means, the motivation, and as far as we know the desire to turn this nightmare period around. Be careful what you wish for! And Leicester was sold to far east investors whenever it was and ended up winning the prem It's pointless to cherry pick examples I like Denise coates , she is very welcome to carry on creating jobs in stoke and donating millions to the hospital. But whoever owns us , needs to rid us of JC and Scholes and put sensible people in charge . Leicester , Liverpool and Man city have done fine under foreign ownership , but they have done it by having better equipped people than JC and Scholes in charge .

Really are people questioning the Coates commitment?
They have invested their own money into our club with big signings of £20M +
Payed off managers who said they could do the job but later admitted they couldn’t.
The Coates family have and are good for the potters.
Don’t kick a gift horse in the mouth

Yet Burnley have a much more effective team than us , how can this be ! Could it be that they are run by better equipped people than JC and scholes ? Maybe ,it really is a help , to not have the entire organisation headed up by people who don't know how to run a football club ?

I fully agree. It doesn't however make them untouchable. And the fact remains they have done an appalling job of running the club for the last 4 years. What should have happened 4 years ago is that they admit JC isn't capable to do the job he has and TS needs replacing for someone better. And they should also have instilled a mission statement outlining a club identity. And I don't mean some pointless PR stunt email to fob the fans off with. I mean a proper internal 5 year plan put together by a proper director of football with proper modern ideas with whatever other specialist staff that were required. Their insistence of this jobs for the boys mentality is both damaging to the club and in turn insulting to the fans. Yes its their money and they've thrown plenty at it which makes it hard to fault them but the reality is the club exists because of the fans. Start remembering that please Stoke. They have thrown the money in all the wrong directions. Upstairs is where they need to begin.

In the best part of the century or so before Peter Coates gained control of the club, Stoke had spent a total of 1 (one) season in Division 3. Then consider that this will be the 3rd time that he has relegated us to Division 3 in his various tenures. Yes, that's 3 times. Let that sink in for a moment! It should be clear to everyone by now that he, his family and their sycophantic hangers on (Scholes etc.) have absolutely no fucking idea how to run a football club. They lucked their way into the PL, no doubt arrogantly thinking it was solely their genius that got us there. They've all been massively found out now and they have absolutely no idea how to arrest our decline. Stoke is just a hobby, a useful distraction from their main business interests, and will be discarded like an old train set as soon as John gets bored, or more when likely Denise calls time on the whole shit show. Given that he has the worst record of any Stoke chairman in our long and undistinguished history, it is beyond me why so many Stoke fans think we should bend the knee to "St. Peter" just because he once got us to the Top Flight...where we'd spent the majority of our time before he fucking showed up anyway. It's cringeworthy, servile, unambitious bollox. The Coates family are one of the richest club owners in the world, if they had any ambition, any magnificence in their souls, Stoke would be competing for cups and European places on a regular basis. Instead, we had a mediocre decade in the PL and departed without a fight and a reputation for being a horrible hoofball team that everyone was glad to see the back of. It will take decades for us to shake that reputation if indeed, we ever do. John seems a nice bloke TBF but he's fucking clueless and so out of his depth its scary. Peter, like many self made millionaires, is arrogant, condescending and thinks everyone with a penny less than him (i.e. our fans) is a peasant...he's basically Mr Burns without the laughs. I remember Coates MK1 (and his infamous Golden share) and how much he was despised by all Stoke fans as he went about stripping the club of its assets and its dignity. So go now please Peter, John et al, sell us to someone who has some ambition and enough nous to install experienced football people to run the club. I'll take my chance with the Chinese, Portuguese etc, basically anyone who has ambitions to be more than drab and mediocre. It might work out, it might not, but to me a roll of the dice now is preferable to the slow death of the club that we are seeing played out before our eyes. 1 x FA Cup final, 2 x promotions and 4 x relegations. A fucking piss poor show for a family of local multi-billionaires who profess to love the club and have owned it for the best part of 30 years. Time to fold your cards and find another hobby, preferably one where you actually know what you're doing. I actually laughed out loud at this.

So it's all Peter Coates' fault then. Nothing to do with successive managers, players, recruitment etc. It will all come out in the wash, but I suspect that there have been, and maybe continue to be issues with certain players (recent past and maybe residual issues hinted at by our manager). I think that M.O.N. has done a pretty decent job since he has come here. If we manage to avoid the drop I think we will be a much more competitive team next season. Now is not the time to make changes - least of all in terms of the ownership of the club.

In some respects their loyalty to useless senior employees is admirable i.e. JC and TS. In other respects its heart breaking and frustrating for the fans. They have the money. Stop wasting it on players and a new manager every 6 months and put the senior management structure in place first and give us a direction and an identity. Its like up specking your new motor to the hilt with all the latest gizmos and not bothering to put the bloody engine in. Moronic.
