The Sporting Director has a massive responsibility in terms of the clubs ambition and targets, we must appoint somebody with a philosophy for this role. Or somebody who knows what they are doing! That helps too

Best day of the transfer window so far IMO.
Now to get a decent replacement who actually knows the game.

Mick Harford to replace him? Good shout that.
What was the one Alan Nixon mentioned at the time Jones joined us, ex Arsenal bloke who we had ready or had discussions with at some point?

Forget messing around with Mick Hartford and suchlike, just spend the Dwight Gayle money on hoovering up Brentford's scouting system and algorithms.
It'll pay for itself inside 18 months.

Unless the role changes then it's unlikely we would attract the high calibre football savvy person we would want Scholes has far too much say over transfer & contract negotiations, until that responsibility is taken away from him the problem will persist

Jones laid down the law? It will be interesting to see if he’s replaced or the job is simply left vacant. Still think we should have someone in his “role” so to speak but interesting developments ahead. interesting that when TP thought we didn't need a mark cartwright ,no one would listen When Jones thinks we don't need a mark cartwright , they will listen
I would be interested to know , how much money those running the club spent on deciding ( eventually ) they agree with the TP and Jones
IF there ever was , ' a role ', it was probably what TP had in mind , when he wanted to bring in top class former England internationals like Gerry Francis and Peter Reid , for advice and a second opinion on transfer spending , coaching , team shape and game management .
I can genuinely understand why a TP or an NJ might want to listen to the opinion of Francis and Reid on all of the above .
But why on earth, would they be interested in Mark Cartwrights opinion , on any of it ?

Wonder who the next scapegoat for hire will be. His job is literally to put the right characters in front of the manager as options to sign - he has failed in that task miserably

Just Scholes left to pay for his sheer incompetence.
Best news that’s come out of this club for years.
I’d say shut the door on his way out but he’ll probably get wedged in the frame the fat bastard.

Well you don't have to have been a top level professional footballer to know the game inside our and perform in a Sporting/Technical Director role, there's myriad examples of successful Director's who have scarcely kicked a ball in their lives but know the makings of a good player, understand contextual stats and conduct thorough scouting, tactical appraisals etc Cartwright's problem is that he demonstrated next to non of this and in reality seemed to operate as nothing more than a middle man between Stoke and Beswicks. The former may not have been part of his role so maybe it's harsh to criticise him on it, but if it wasn't his role I genuinely don't know what he was meant to be doing here.

See ya Mark Funny that NJ mentions Cartwright's 'professionalism' - fans and colleagues seem to have very divergent views?

So we can finish mid table. And Brentford are the biggest spenders in the league so far this window. Brentford's system has allowed them to punch above their weight for the past few years, and if they are spending heavily now it's a result of selling players on for massive profits after picking them up for next to nothing. If they had a fraction more clout as a club they'd probably have kept hold of most of their best.

Is this the tide turning?
I've heard people in the game hinting at our 'internal corruption' - what that means is anyone's guess without the facts but personally I think this is great news

Plenty of clubs high and low in recent years succeeding with a manager who just manages. All depends on what you have around you, my guess is Jones is enthused and motivated enough to look after himself so needs less of the Philosophy part but second opinions with player targets etc.
