I’ve only just started watching the first series.
It’s very good isn’t it.
And you look at the players they had on paper and you wonder how they fucked it up.
Jonny Williams is a tremendous little footballer for instance.
Then you see Marc Wilson to the rescue and he can’t work a door.

I find it a real eye opener. Football is so fucked up. Oh and have you ever seen a more fragile footballer than Williams? How can someone so good at football be so lacking in confidence??! I found him fascinating.

I found him fascinating. Yeah he’s clearly not confident with his body at all. Just looked on wiki as to where he is now and it looks like he’s played most games for Charlton. I can’t say I knew he was there but I’m awful with this league. Just got to them appointing Coleman and they seem so optimistic bless ‘em.

Surely The Cup Winners Cup? Wasn't a thing then. Started in the 60s Sunderland won the cup in 73 wasn't it? Edit- Just Googled...lost 3-2 on aggregate to Sporting Lisbon in the 2nd round. I actually wanted us to sign Darron Gibson at one point but after seeing that you realise what an absolute piece of work he is

Would be interesting to see if this was Stoke and how much we would change our opinions on a few people

Gibson is clearly on the verge of having a proper drink problem and fair play to the fan for calling him out on that. But so far (only 4 in) their attitudes don't seem to be that bad. They just all seem thick.

There are definitely parallels with us but they’re on a fuck up level all of their own.

But I think we're closer than people like to imagine. But hopefully we've got lucky with O'Neil. It is interesting how much their owner isn't there and I think that is a big difference. If this was on Stoke, Coates would be on camera. Which is something I don't ordinarily like but it does show he cares.

Binged the second series last night / yesterday afternoon. Just staggered watching it. I can't believe the owner went from 1.5M to 3+1M for Will Grigg when his side kick (the bald bloke, forget his name) was telling him not to do it and his manager told him he wasn't worth it!
The other bloke, Methven, is a right piece of work isn't he? Proper old skool corporate bully boy, or how he may have been portrayed by the editing to be fair to him, with no ideas other than to play an Ibiza house track for the walk out music and heap piles of pressure onto his staff, with very few ideas himself.
I found the bit about ticketing to be well out of order at the end. Sunderland fans had turned up in their thousands and he's asking his staff how they can get more fans in through the door at the back end of the season, talking about almost guilt tripping them into going, with one of the poorest areas of the country having to fork out for two Wembley trips.
Shocking.

Thought Methven came across a bit of a prick but probably just what they needed. Looks like it'd been a bit of a holiday club with no targets and no accountability. The woman he had a pop at was asking for that IMO with her blase attitude.

Took me a good few minutes to realise it was him on the pitch when we played them away at the Valley back at the start of the season.. Too be fair we made him look far better than he was that day. A good player but never quite making the grade to push on & better himself. Abit in the Stephen Ireland mold to a lesser extent, Ireland had loads of promise & was the next best thing at Man City but soon fell away.

Would be interesting to see if this was Stoke and how much we would change our opinions on a few people I think we'd probably be more exasperated with Scholes than we are now whilst warming to him as a person

Shocking. Ive watched three episodes of the new series and the new owner and Charlie the prick are both real David Brent characters aren’t they.

So they've just furloughed their entire squad.
Which will go down well I would imagine.
And I know most people won't feel for them but they will have bills that they can afford on what they're paid which I would imagine is upward of 5k a week for most of them, probably more.
To go from that to 80% of £2500 a month is a massive difference and could be a disaster financially for some of them.
And yes I know lots more people will be far worse off but I feel sorry for them too.
And it's very shitty from the club and I would imagine only harbour negatvity.

Have not bothered to watch it. The club was rotten and rotting when they took on Niall Quinn as chairman. I thought that they were mad at the time, even though I realised that the idea was to win over the supporters who worshiped him and as they needed someone on board who actually understood the game!
Am and always was a great fan of Denis Smith but would have had a fit had we done the same with him.
Quinn did not even realise what (then manager) Roy Keane was up to and how few days a week he was at the club, apparently, never mind on the training ground!
When AFC Sunderland became a topic on here and I laid into them, I was criticised by a few on here who asked why I “ had it in for them”. Well now you know.

Not quite like that, they are topping up their wages in full so if they are on £8k per month then they are using the government to pay £2500 and they will top up by a further £5500 per month.
Not sure this is how the scheme was meant to be introduced to help loaded footballers

Truth is we see 90 mins a week and have very little idea of what actually goes on at a club. If we win everything's rosy, if we lose its doom and gloom.

i did love the conversation about the 200k cryo therapy chamber that was occasionally used by a coach for his bad back!
or the meeting where the boss man decided to use quicksilver by bellissima as the new walkout music and was loving his idea until that lad said no point doing that unless you put a new PA system in!

Just watched two more.
What a dick Rodwell is but I would have done the same but played tbh. That’s just out of order.
Jonny Williams seems a class act though but as foxy says, so wary of his body. But seems a lovely bloke.

It's even worse than that. The bloke with a bad back in the Cryotherapy chamber was not a coach, it was the previous CEO. Martin Bain!

Bain and Methven were like polar opposites. Bain came across as quite personable, the staff liked him but he appeared to be doing little to address the situation they were in. Methven came across as a twat who the staff didn't like but was at least trying to get the club out of the rut they were in. In Bain's defence it can't have been easy working for Ellis Short.

When you get to season 2 I think Luke O’Nien is actually the most genuinely likeable footballer I ever saw. Genuinely seems really decent.

Grabban didn’t but he was only there on loan and tbh he did better for himself. I can’t blame him for that. He did his job whilst he was there then got out because he could see what was coming. I think that’s fair. Didn’t realise how good his goalscoring record has been these last few years tbh. Can’t wait for series 2. We’ve just got past the January transfer window so should be close.

Martin Bain actually came across imo. Just think his hands were tied in a lot of cases.
The two Southern chancers seem like absolute arseholes.

This Will Grigg thing is weird. The manager said it was too much money but the Chairman signed him anyway! Why wasn’t there a Plan B on the deadline day?

Yeah it’s just mad isn’t it but I reckon it goes on a lot. And then the manager gets the blame. He’s just so naive the owner, he seems a lovely bloke but just a dreamer who’s not in the real world when it comes to what he’s owning.

This Will Grigg thing is weird. The manager said it was too much money but the Chairman signed him anyway! Why wasn’t there a Plan B on the deadline day? And not just the manager. Donald's football advisor and buddy Richard Hill who was sat with him at the time categorically told him not to bid higher but he still jumped from 1.25m to 3m. Unbelievable! That said I did quite like Donald, just couldn't be doing with Methven
