Currently watching the Netflix documentary Sunderland Til I Die. Well worth a watch.
It is scary how many parallels there are between us and them last season. Most of the same mistakes and false assumptions have been made. For example:
- a belief that retaining the nucleus of a failed Premier League side gives you the best chance of automatic promotion, but instead gives you mediocrity
- appointing an experienced Championship Manager (Grayson) based on middling results
- most starkly. a working class city feeling totally remote from the highly paid players on the pitch.
Etc. Etc.
Fortunately we won’t go down as they did, but we really appear to have done our best to follow their lead!

Not this stuff again ...How have we followed their lead?
They virtually pulled all their spending whereas we have backed the managers, it’s not the same scenario
It used to be Charlton now its Sunderland....whose next

They never even looked like getting out of it.

Are we now less confident that we wouldn’t follow suit??

I watched it last week, there are some worrying parallels.

Whereas the Leeds documentary on Amazon showed a club with a clear vision and purpose. I was particularly frustrated by the comparison between their recruitment and ours. They identified 4 particular type of players in key positions. Securing 3 and only missing out on Daniel James on transferdeadline due to Swansea not honouring the transfer - what a difference it would make if we had an owner with vision, a chief exec as professional and driven as theirs and a director of football who had the same level of knowledge and contacts.

That Charlie Methven is actually Barry Homeowner.
He's a walking Bob Mortimer character, what an absolute gimp the bloke is.

So far on this thread, Coleman has been described as a randy bastard and having shifty eyes. (I've not watched the programme yet but I do have Netflix). I always thought he looked a bit Indian, he could always get a part in a remake of 'It ain't half hot Mum'. Pretty sure one of his parents is Irish which makes it more confusing. Always seems a decent chap and came over well. As for Rodwell, agree is a prime example of a payer raking in money with little love for his club but his contract is down to sheer stupidity by Sunderland.

If they’d kept hold of Maja til the end of the season and risked him going on a free they may of got promoted. I’d of told the agent to do one and therefore they didn’t need to waste all that money on Griggs which would’ve saved money anyway.

Bloody hell £57k per week, the football world has gone mad. How did A french club afford those wages.

This is what I found bizarre, they were willing to let go a potential 25 goal season guy for about 1.5 who was scoring for fun yet then buy Grigg for 3 million who I'm sure was on a lot higher wage. I suppose the only risk is having player who isn't happy but didn't come across like that.

Just watched episode 3 and 4. Donald comes across alright but Methven an absolute tosser!
Could Tyrese become our Maja, albeit tied down to us? If so, the decision to tie him down to that contract could be the best business we've done in many a year

Methven has come in for a lot of stick since the series aired but I thought he was probably what the club needed off the field.
The place needed a gigantic kick up the arse.

I’m about half way through the first series. My main observation so far is that people in Sunderland bang on about being a ‘big’ club more than is healthy.
In my lifetime they’ve been out of the top flight more often than they’ve been in it.

Although Methven was obviously a bit (very) Brent and rubbed a few people up the wrong way, he did seem to know what he was doing and I thought him and Donald did at least have Sunderland’s best interests at heart.

I know not Stoke related at all other than a story of trying to survive in the Championship after a succession of managers! Amway doco is really well done - really recommend watching #nospoilers Thanks, I’m really enjoying it
