Wow! David Duckenfield has really opened a can of worms now. 26 years the Scousers have been baying for blood and claiming the Police were lying - Now he's finally admitted it I'd suggest he moves very far away because they're not gonna let it lie now! Old Duckers & his Porkie Pies

Old Duckers & his Porkie PiesIt's a can of worms in more ways than one. This is the Police we're talking about here (supposedly above the law in every which way), and if you are looking at it from a naive angle, I find the lies that were told to be completely incomprehensible. Where do you even start with it? Poor, poor families that have had to put up with so much over the years. Just imagine the anger that this is causing. It will be worse than the original hurt they felt and all of the years since combined. They must be totally inconsolable right now.

I suspect he panicked at the time realizing he had made the wrong decision so lied about it not expecting the consequences that followed. Once he had lied he couldn't retract and things took a turn for the worst outcome so he added lies to lies. Totally despicable to attempt to shift the blame and whilst he would have been rightly blamed at the time it would have been more honourable, to have continued the lie for all these years is truly disgusting.

His biggest mistake was not closing off the entrance to the middle pens. By all accounts, it was bedlam outside by the turnstiles, and given the panic and advice from officers on horseback in the middle of it all, it was understandable that the gate was opened. Unforgivable to then say the fans had kicked the gate through though.

This. Only question now is what comeback is there to him. He should be in jail.

Unforgivable to then say the fans had kicked the gate through though. The biggest mistake was putting Duckenfield in charge of the game in the first place and he admitted as much in his testimony yesterday. He'd never handled a big football match before and was completely inexperienced for the task in hand. The semi final had taken place at exactly the same stadium, with the two exact same clubs and their fans were at the same ends of the stadium, the year previously. The major difference on the day of the tragedy was how the game was policed ... The year before, barriers had been used in a police cordon to control the flow of supporters into the area outside of the Leppings Lane turnstiles, thus ensuring a crush didn't build up and when the central pens on the terrace became full, the police closed off access to them and directed incoming supporters to the emptier pens at the sides. Neither of these things happened under Duckenfield's watch. The police commander in charge the year before knew the stadium well and had overseen several semi finals previously.

If the reported quote of his apology is correct it is very strange. He is reported to have said that "it's arguably one of the biggest regrets of my life that I did not forsee where the fans would go when they came in through the gates"
What other regrets does he have that is the equivalent to the one that led to the death of 96 people?
We all make mistakes, happily very few will experience mistakes that have such dire consequences. It isn't making the mistake that is so appalling it is covering it up for 20 odd years.

Scape goat springs to mine. Hopefully not. The inquest has heard already about other contributing factors ......over selling of tickets, appalling ground conditions and the effect of fencing. Besides the coroners job isn't to apportion blame, only to establish facts of who died, how they died and when. The question of why they died is for criminal court if if goes that far.

Presumably if the British justice system don't prosecute him now, then somebody from Liverpool will instigate a private prosecution and he can hardly say something different in a criminal case now - what an utter scumbag.

The problem here is that there were many many factors coming into play that culminated in a perfect storm of deadly circumstance. There is no individual solely to blame and although I completely understand the desire to push this to an ultimate conclusion it would be plain wrong to helpmate blame for these deaths on a single individual.

He effectively admitted to lying 26 years ago, when he amended his statement after being caught out. If it hadn't been for CCTV, stewards and other more honest policeman contradicting his story, he'd have almost certainly stood by his statement. All he's admitted today, is that he's a corrupt bent copper who wasn't fit to do his job... Oh and that he's a coward, incapable of being honest until under oath.
Duckenfield has exploited legal loopholes for years since that day to avoid any kind of punishment. He's enjoyed a lucrative full police pension for 25 years, by exploiting such loopholes. The man is a menace, a villain and someone devoid of the integrity required to be a good policeman.
People like David Duckenfield deserve to be in jail. Hopefully justice will be served in that respect.

In the aftermath of the tragedy Duckenfield would have known about the many shortcomings that came together on that day to cause it. In the clamour to apportion blame, If he had admitted his errors he knew he would have been made the scapegoat for all the other authorities and would have been hung out to dry. During this inquest the jury have heard all the contributing factors and a clearer and more open picture of all the events prior to and after the tragedy has emerged. David Duckenfield has therefore decided that it is now time to admit to his mistakes and apologise to the families. He knows he will possibly get his come uppance in a future criminal court, but so will others who tried to cover up their mistakes. I don't condone his actions on the day of and since the tragedy. But I don't blame him for how he has conducted himself to avoid being made a scapegoat.

And people will use this latest news to try and strengthen their argument that the fans had nothing to do with events if that day. Duckenfield is scum but the hands of many liverpool fans are still dirty to this day.
