FILM: Step Brothers (15) 2/5 11:30 - 29-August-2008 Be the first reader to comment on this story.
THE biggest laugh in Adam McKay's comedy of escalating sibling rivalry comes before the opening credits roll. We are treated to one of George W. Bush's infamous turns of phrase, taken from a campaign speech in 2000, when he proudly declared, "Families is where our nation finds hope, where wings take dream." This unintentional verbal faux pas surpasses anything in McKay and Will Ferrell's script, which is as gleefully mean-spirited as it is unnecessarily foul-mouthed. The flimsy premise reunites Ferrell and John C Reilly, who co-starred in Talladega Nights: The Ballad Of Ricky Bobby, as 40-something men who possess the mental age of adolescents. Forced to live together, these two idiot savants – with the emphasis on idiot – bicker incessantly, threatening physical violence ("As soon as your eyes shut, I'm gonna punch you square in the face!") before realising the error of their ways. Brennan (Ferrell) is 40-going-on-14. He still lives at home with his mother Nancy (Mary Steenburgen) and openly nurtures resentment for his boorish younger brother Derek (Adam Scott), whose perfect family includes a blonde, beautiful wife (Kathryn Hahn) and two adorable, singing children. During a medical convention, Nancy meets Robert (Richard Jenkins), who has his own adult son at home – Dale (Reilly) – and the lonely 50-somethings embark on a whirlwind romance. Wedding bells peel and Nancy moves in with her new husband with disgruntled Brennan in tow. The new living arrangements pose a dilemma because, for the first time ever, Dale must share his bedroom. Sibling resentment boils over with Dale's cherished drum kit taking the brunt of the frustrations, but the stepbrothers unexpectedly discover common ground: favourite dinosaurs and their shared hatred of Derek. When Dale subsequently discovers his stepbrother's gift for singing ("You have the voice of an angel...it's like Fergie meets Jesus!"), they suddenly find their direction in life as a musical double-act. However, Derek mocks their efforts, waiting smugly for the pair to fall flat on their goofy faces. Step Brothers is just as scatological, messy and puerile as Anchorman and Talladega Nights, and will therefore delight audiences who lapped up Ferrell's buffoonery in those pictures. There's undeniably a spark between the leads and their energy, riffing off one another, powers the film through its many lulls to its shameless feelgood resolution. Laughs are in desperately short supply, though. If the lead characters were likeable, or their childish behaviour in any way comprehensible, then we might feel compelled to chuckle as Brennan exacts his revenge by wiping his sweaty lower portions on Dale's beloved drum kit. Instead, when a gang of pint-sized playground bullies beats the gruesome duo to a pulp, we strongly resist the urge to cheer. Strong language and sex references Press Association

Just-an-Ipswich-fan Posted 30/8/2008 09:27 #22446 Subject: OFFICIAL: Stoke Bid £3m For Walters
Manager
Posts: 1010
Location: Ipswich Yes, it has now been confirmed that Stoke have made an official bid of £3m fo Jon Walters, and Town have announced they are considering it this weekend.
However, it was rumoured yesterday, that Walters and his family were considering a move to Suffolk, which would end speculation about him wanting a move North to be with his family.
Derek Bowden, Cheif executive, has insisted that Walters has NOT handed in a transfer request, but this morning, reports in the North West are suggesting otherwise.
Walters is also believed to want the opportunity just to talk to Stoke, and see what happens from there.

i feel we base our game to much on his long throws like on Saturday every throw in within the final third bar 1/2 was a long throw am not saying dont do it as i think its a brillant weapon for us but id like to see us use a little bit more variety as we could catch them out with a quick short 1 every now and again especially if we bring in a winger who can cross it

this could be what was meant by him a while back. he said in an interview if he couldnt get a permit then we would send him over to a scandanvian team or european team for a year until we will be able reapply for a permit. Dont we already own him? but cant play him because of his failure to get a work permit?

From that last bit of info saying they have no concrete offers i think they have been trying to force us into making a bid as they have got no interest anywhere else and are getting itchy feet as they know they have got to move him on

Not to put a downer on things but have we even confirmed we are back in the market for him? As that report above seems to suggest that we have been in for him but now other clubs are in for him who have more chance of concluding the deal.
Dont get me wrong id love to sign the big man it would be a fantastic signing

That's the spirit - lets have a wip round and get the big man in ! I will be walking around with a yellow bucket on Saturday- if you can all put in a tenner than that would be much appreciated Let's go Zig-crazy! Knowles i was just about to post something similar to that, wasn't there a club what actually did that to buy a player some years back im sure i heard about it somewhere. Would show the club just how much we all want them to sign him and would maybe make them push the boat out a lil bit more to get him in
