Was looking through the full breakdown of the squad and their contract expiry dates (thanks Fuller Magic) and of those who are up this summer (excluding loans) I think there’s question marks over Stevens and Thompson.
Stevens has looked a very solid championship LB but is well past 30 and has a woeful injury record. Would we give him another year on reduced terms to you think? Perhaps he’s awful a final two year deal elsewhere?
Thompson I think has done enough to earn a short (two year) deal, reported on low wages and decent cover at this welcome.
Welcome thoughts, go on Stoke.

When he plays Stevens looks like an excellent back up left back However his injury record cannot be ignored I'll sit on the fence on that one we simply have to sign a bone fide decent left back
Thompson yes definitely give a new contract, he's actually improved this season

Thompson definitely deserves a new contract, he’s a versatile player to have around the squad but I’m not sure he’ll ever be a guaranteed starter. I think Stevens is too injury prone to justify a renewal but he was excellent yesterday.

I'd be happy if Thompson was given another 12 months tbh, in the hope he never has to play.
He can do a job every so often and as has been said is versatile enough.

Ideally you’d fuck both off in a heartbeat.
Stevens on a grand or two a week as back up isn’t bad though.
Same for Thompson I guess but he’s just a bit tragic isn’t he.

Vastly improved footballer and an excellent squad player. He’s also the lowest earner of all the first team squad members at £220,000pa (£4,231 pw), barely a living wage!

I’d keep both of them as back up.

Thompson is definitely worth another deal as a back-up.
Stevens is just too injury prone.

Definitely keep both. Thompson is a decent squad addition at defensive mid at this level, 2 year contract. Stevens good back up as a straight full back, we would not be in this position had stevens been fit the past 2 months, 12 month contract. We need proper first choice left back though.
Burger, Pearson, Thompson, Baker and (don’t bite my head off) Cundle, a good squad of defensive midfielders.
Need a proper playmaker in the team though.
Iversen is looking better and the defence starting to gel.
Hoever seems a different player since the rallying call last month.
Campbell, Johnson and (though looks bothered recently) Laurent need to be moved on.
The rest will come good under this regime next season.
I know we are not safe yet, but we won’t be going down now. 2 home draws, 1 win and 1 away draw we stay up!

Cheap + versatile (Thompson) + capable of 7+ ratings + good characters. Also, pre season will likely see a lot of new faces again so if we can keep 2 it'd help with the team atmosphere a bit. I'd keep them both.

Definitely renew Thompson.
No for Stevens. Just too injury prone. Need to sign 2 left backs in the Summer and give them both the chance to make the position their own.

Stevens is to old and to injury prone so no
Thompson i’d let go so he can drop down a league and play regularly

Stevens could only come in as a third choice left back. He’s good enough but never fit. He would need a contract that would reflect that.
I’d always give Thompson a contract. He’s a decent utility player who puts in the work and you need those at every level.

Thompson definitely. Stevens No. We can't keep signing injury prone players.

I like Stevens when fit, but as said in there lies the problem! He is way too injury prone to take the risk for another season in my opinion. Bring in two new left backs I say! Thompson for 5-6K per week would make sense for a couple of years, but he should only be back up as he already is of course!

Thompson is a good squad player. I wouldn't want him as a first team regular but as backup in several positions he won't let you down.
When fit Stevens is good enough to justify a place in the starting 11 - he's the most reliable defender on our books. Injuries and age are an issue but I'd give him another year, especially if we go for a young left back with potential who he could mentor and provide genuine competition in the starting 11.

The only reason to re-sign Thompson is if he’s on a deal that represents extraordinary value. He’s been here under 3 different managers and hasn’t ever been able to hold down a place in the first 11, he’s a league one player really.
I really like Stevens when he is fit but his injury record is abysmal. We need a proper non-injury prone left back as the main one. Would Stevens accept a pay as you play deal? I’m minded to say get rid and get two left backs in in the summer.

No room for sentiment.
Only sign players for starting 11.
Squad players should be those chomping at the bit to start fighting for starting 11.
Having so many "squad" players is one of our issues

Apparently spec savers have a new advert
Stoke fans on the oatcake saying don’t give Thomson 2 more years followed by a list of our best performances all,of which he has played in .
punch line of course
should have gone to spec savers.

Having so many "squad" players is one of our issues I'd describe Thompson as a utility player - if everyone is fit you probably wouldn't play him but his versatility makes him useful in the squad. You don't want a squad full of utility players but having one or two is useful. Personally I think Stevens is good enough to challenge for a first team spot on merit. The only issue for me is his injury record but for a year I'd take that chance providing we get someone who can also challenge for the first 11 slot.

For me Thompson a no braniner, good solid pro, good back up, well priced.
No hes not a automatic starter but id much prefer to paying him what hes on to be a utility player/backup than Pearson.
Stevens, depends what other options are out there, for his reported salary and his injury record I don't think we can afford to keep him, hes done nothing wrong id want to look at younger options.
