I'd prefer it not go ahead if its only a 3500 capacity, bit of a damp squib. You can get 1500 at Victoria Hall and regent, 2500 at Keele su.
Would want something around 10k mark like motoroint(Nottingham) first direct (Leeds) utilita arenas in brum, sheff and Newcastle.
Get some big name artists here, comedians, get the darts here, bloody robot wars. with N-U-L, S-O-T, and the moorlands, it's well over 500k population, build it and they will come. Just like plenty on here have travelled miles for a gig, other from further away would come here.

The equal pay and commonwealth games wouldn't have helped, but most councils are struggling. For now, the ones going bust are where something else has gone/been done wrong. But more and more will be dragged to destruction. Their statuary requirements are getting bigger each year, growing at a far higher rate than the money coming in. And it's gonna get worse in the following years, as more people live longer, especially people without the capital to fund their social care.

biggest but the other cockups add to nearly as much I wouldn't have bothered with the street signs but those savings wouldn't dent the £1 billion in settlements would they? It's a bit weird for a supposed finance explaining article to spend more time getting het up about "woke" street signs. Tbf the Mail might not be good at budgets but their outrage bait game is top notch. here's another 10 million

It should have been built by the Brit, akin to Bolton or MK. That way the cars parks are already there and access to the A50 is better. Maybe resurrect the train line/tram idea as well. Putting it in Hanley where theres already the Viccy hall and regent is pointless. It needs to go elsewhere to work.

People don't set foot in Hanley because there's bugger all there yeah, and tbh I don't think putting an arena in what even local people think is a dump will necessarily solve all the problems. It's about foundations, a lot of Hanley's problems are down to people's perceptions of it, which means they don't come and shop, less custom leads to shops closing, etc.

People coming to a football game are different to those going to a gig or concert. We saw the chaos when England women played at the ground last year - bus services couldn’t cope, people didn’t have a clue how to get there and the park & ride was shambolic. The majority of fans at football (home) know what’s happening, where to park and how to get in and out. I’d argue a larger proportion wouldn’t know if you put the arena there. Agree about Hanley though. Someone said earlier up about putting it in Stoke. It needs to be in the middle of a town/city, allowing for other local businesses to profit and grow from it alongside a proper travel infrastructure to get to it. Being able to easily walk to it from the train station or a tram line in place would be massively beneficial - one that runs late to allow for later finishes (which I appreciate you’ve suggested in your post). Was putting the Brit where we did the right idea ultimately? If it had stayed in Stoke and we’d revamped the whole area (including the old training pitch) I reckon we could’ve fitted an arena there as well. Transport infrastructure would need to be changed with the roads in and out to be changed but that could’ve helped save Stoke town centre more so than it is now. Maintains the easy access to the train station.

I agree if we had kept the ground in stoke it could have revamped the area. Even if we moved to the old Michelin site it would have been better plus plenty of land for a stadium, arena, pubs and shops nearby. Too little to late now though.

Maybe we should have had a sports village instead of distribution centres. I still miss the speedway, and although its dying a slow death in this country a new circuit could have been used for stock cars and banger racing as well.

I do still think it’s a bit sparse up there. If I were going somewhere for a concert/sports event I’d prefer to have a few more pubs closer by & it be easier to get to and from via public transport. Stokes a unique city in respect of being so linear and not having that central hub built out from. One option would be to focus on each town and give them something to focus on. E.g Hanley - cultural quarter for shopping and the theatre. Develop Stoke with this new potential arena and a few other newer developments that offer something to bring people in. Good shout again about e-sports - maybe a smaller venue initially. Longton, focus on the heritage of the city built around Gladstone and the culinary delight of Nigde Knock burslem down - instantly improves its value I’m struggling with Tunstall - do they still have a market? Fenton, build on the brown field sites and bring businesses in with its close proximity to the A50. Focus on technology developments linking with Keele and Staffs uni.

I think we have too many *places of interest* for what is ultimately a small city. Any money coming in will be swallowed up by Hanley, or on a project like Goods Yard. I think the idea is by improving Hanley, the benefits *should* trickle down across the city. After all, some of these towns are barely miles apart from each other. I think they need to focus on improving the centre of the city, from the train station to the potteries shopping centre to festival park to the university. And basics for the rest. I think if the football club was looking to move ground and was richer than the late 90s it would probably have seriously considered staying in Stoke town centre, and maybe knocking down those streets which lead up to the church area.

Compounded with the poor transport options, let’s face it if you’re going Hanley (& it’s not walkable) you’ve got to drive. The neglect in the other towns is laid out before for us, it wasn’t that long buildings were literally falling down in the middle of Longtons Main Street. Granted this was a private building but with no outward investment trickling through faceless property owners don’t see the value in maintaining their properties until the wider investment follows. And the most bizarre thing is that those properties could have accessed some funding for a facelift but chose not to. We have got lots of places to interest and they are all dotted about as you say. This is why I think a novel approach might actually be beneficial. There is still interest in the pottery industry and people do travel if you have a decent museum style attraction (Nottingham Castle is good for crime buffs and the Black Country museum for that pet of the industrial revolution). I don’t think we’ve done enough with Gladstone and that’s had further funding cut with a focus on driving it’s own income from commercial activities.

Unfortunately (right or wrong) the new council looks set to cancel all of these plans as it stares bankrupcy in the face.
unless central government of whatever persuasion give us the city mo ey then stoke on trent will just continue to get less and less attractive for any outside investment.
Very sad news

Rather than start a new thread I thought I'd revive this one. Many town and city centres are dying due to lack of investment, on-line shopping, insufficient housing for rent or sale, mortgages too expensive, high rates, reduced travel services, etc. Maybe this is the answer:- www.housingtoday.co.uk/news/asda-and-barratt-partner-for-1500-home-west-london-scheme/5129403.articleRegeneration of town centres by combined affordable housing and commerce has potential, at least Asda and Barratt think so. If we wait for government, local or national, to do anything it will be a long wait. The dead hand of bureaucracy kills enterprise. For such schemes to happen though government has to assist in terms of compulsory purchase to release real estate, planning permission, and financial incentives, such as allowing developers to get their money back quickly.

Interesting. However it will still require planning permission so the dead hand of bureaucracy will still have its impact. Our planning system is fucked. Doesn't work and holds this country back with everything. Its a fucking national disgrace to add to the very long list of national disgraces we have.

I wonder if the council have approached bet365 for help with the funding for an arena?
They’d seem a very logical choice for it give the sporting events that could go on in there if it was done right - darts, snooker, ice hockey, basketball, netball etc.
It just makes sense for it and to really make a go of it. Hanley needs more housing for sure as with more people living closer to more people will use it. But an arena would definitely add to the area and I think would be well used if it was done right.

I agree with all that apart from the location. Hanley is a dead duck and has had more than its fair share of investment and development. It's alien to me but given the focus of Staffs University on gaming, setting it up to present live eSports shows would be complimentary and possibly unique.

I am always a bit sceptical on things like this. Houses affordable to who ? The contract will probably go out to cheapest contractor, 'value engineering' will take place to cut corners, cheap materials will be used and it will probably look like a shithole in 10 years after it's built as the landlords wont invest in proper maintenance, it seems the British way of doing things to ensure as much profit goes to those with the most money already. Look to do a scheme like they do it places like Denmark, Sweden etc.
