You actually can. It takes a long time and a lot of patience, but it is possible to polish a turd. When reading this quote I've always thought that if you froze said turd and then used shoe polish or similar some sort of reflective surface could be quite easily achieved. Not that I'll be trying it.

They'd probably be better off reconstructing the entire pub from whatever the soundproof karaoke booth is made from....

It would of transformed the city centre with bars and restaurants shooting up around it and bringing people into the city centre in huge numbers
Sadly it’s always other cities who only see the benefits

I'll defend the council, on the basis these things need proper thinking through and it's probably not financially viable.
I think we (and often areas) assume that we are sleeping giants, with a bit of investment everyone will want to come here. People are longing to come to Stoke-on-Trent to watch a gig, they hate having to go to Manc or Brum etc type thinking. We've been hollowed out as a city, we need firm foundations before we start putting in trams/arenas.
I've seen "well they'll obviously get Darts played there" who says the PDC will just come here? Because of Phil Taylor? Their Premier League is being played in huge cities.
There's a world where the council gives money to an arena, it struggles to be financially viable and then they lose tens of millions on it. And I can imagine the reaction they'll get.

Why, what's happening (or not happening)?
I can't see anything in the Eddie Hall Chronicle

The most predictable thing to have happened, off the back of this week's threat of a Section 114.
In one sense, perhaps they're lucky they are not further down the line with it.
Building a not-needed £15m Car Park won't have helped. I wonder if the other Car Park they were planning (ooohhh, we love a good Car Park) will get cancelled as part of this?

yes , b/ham had the commonwealth games , look whats happened there. Lots of people went there and had a great time and spent lots of money ? The commonwealth games and the council going bankrupt aren't anything to do with each other, a historical payment for women who were underpaid is the biggest factor.

I reckon the Brum situation will be giving other councils the willynillies though, especially with the current state of everywhere (pot holes etc). I wonder how much money is wasted in planning things that never go ahead.

It absolutely boils my piss that so many locals together with those inhabiting places from the wonderful Staffordshire Moorlands to Hankelow of all places fall over themselves to put the boot in yet post anything negative about London and there's a positive stampede in defence of the place

I’m excited about the Goods Yard and big it up to everyone from outside the area. This levelling up bollocks for Hanley will die a death. It’s not hard to be negative about

It’s not hard to be negative about www.capitalandcentric.com/goods-yardI was having another look at this earlier. I can't wait to see it when it's finished. It's a shame about the arena. I always thought the proposed capacity for it was too small, but hoped it would help to regenerate the area with new shops, restaurants, street food etc. Maybe with the Goods Yard and more then that could become our city centre and get what I hoped Hanley would?

Reminds me of a smaller version of coal drops yard behind Kings cross in London, a great way of turning disused run down areas into vibrant areas www.kingscross.co.uk/coal-drops-yard

It was never going to happen. You could fill the Louvre with artists' impressions for the area over the years, that amount to naff all.
Some big money has been funnelled in getting all these commissioned.

That's not the way I read it. But if so, fair enough.

In truth, it was never going to happen was it? Another Tory Council pipe dream. I've always said, we missed the boat and should have built a 10,000 seat arena down in the Etruria Valley, brilliant location.

It's a bit weird for a supposed finance explaining article to spend more time getting het up about "woke" street signs. Tbf the Mail might not be good at budgets but their outrage bait game is top notch.
