I thought that they bought well in the summer, but he’s had a torrid time for much of this season.
Gives a replacement time to assess the squad before the window as well.

Sad for him as he’s a Villa fan and done a reasonable job but it’s probably the right call.

I actually don’t think they have bought well. Grealish made that side tick and he has not been properly replaced. Buendia is not being played in his best position, Watkins and Ings don’t really click as a partnership and Bailey has been very poor.

When they bought them this is what I would have expected: Bailey Buendia Watkins Ings No idea what he’s been doing mind.

This one seems the most ridiculous sacking of the recent bunch to me.
Villa have lost their most creative player by far, have important players injured and were only really thrashed by West Ham, but that after being down to 10-men for half the match. Another couple of wins, and they'll be looking like challengers for the European places again. I think success for them this season would be finishing a few points above the relegation places, which they seemed more than capable of doing under Smith despite the recent bad run.

They’ve spent a tonne of money in recent years, they shouldn’t be aiming for 17th place!

I know that they haven’t been playing well and that there’s a big difference between what’s on paper and what they do in reality, but all the signings to me screamed top 10 finishes. I don’t disagree with his sacking given the run of form, but I don’t think they’ll have to gut the squad to do well.

I didn't say 17th, though I didn't realise they were in the top 3 net spenders in Europe according to this: www.marca.com/en/football/premier-league/2021/08/05/610bc633e2704e14338b45d3.htmlI still think it seems a reactive sacking to the recent bad run.

Another good decision. They’ve been wanting to get rid of him for a while. A good decision for who ? The American who’s made a fortune by buying companies just to break them up ? So who will inherit the hot seat, a continental manager to provide the big name that all premier league clubs require only to be booted after 18 months. Pantomime season has started early and I only hope that Smith has the last laugh!

Watching the games though, they looked like they had no tactical plan whatsoever. Against Arsenal and West Ham they were wide open - Moyes set West Ham up with a fairly standard plan tp be organised and hit them on the break and they fell for it every time. He'd also started chopping and changing his teams and systems in a bit of a panic, which as we've seen from some of our managerial issues in recent years, is often a pretty bad sign that the gig is up.

A good decision for Villa, if it stops the rot and they get a manager who knows what to do with the expensive squad they've assembled.
