You been sniffing glue ? Never ever the " greatest player that"s ever walked the earth " You forgetting Pele ? He was better than Pele. Didn't need to count his goals in the schoolyard to prove how great he was Pele was the greatest goal scorer

For those who don’t realise how good he was ....he won the WC in 1986 with the equivalent of Charlton Athletic He was a magician with a football RIP Likewise Naples were no hopers before he signed for them but with him they were champions. BM

GOAT my arse. Just like Thierry Henry anyone who was prepared to cheat and brag about his cheating like he did can’t even be mentioned in the same breath as Sir Stan, Pele, Ronaldo, Messi etc. We often refer to Gordon Banks as the ‘great’ Gordon Banks and for me greatness needs to be measured by the man both on and off the field. Now by that measure, who is the greatest now? ... Maradona

Sat near to him at the Brit when we played Liverpool a few years ago, never seen anyone so uninterested in a game he buggered off at half time.

This thread is really interesting - is it a generational thing I wonder, people's disparate views of him?
For me, he's hands down the greatest player I've ever seen - Ronaldo and Messi may well be better 'people' and conduct themselves in a far better manner, but Christ, in terms of raw footballing ability they just can't hold a candle to Maradona - he was the complete player.

The key difference between Maradona and Messi/Ronaldo is the levels of protection footballers get these days. Look at the way Maradona was targeted and kicked from pillar to post game by game, and he just got back up and went again......

will never be forgiven for his hand of god and how he rubbed it in our faces including at the last worldcup or one before in Brazil maybe he was not a gentleman of the game like our Gordon was or Pele or countless other true greats i hope they do not attempt a minutes silence this weekend for the cheating shite hawk Couldn’t agree more. It’s indicative of how our society has become morally bankrupt and bereft of true, honest role models when we have when a drugs cheat spoken of so fondly and glowingly like he was some friendly uncle who made a minor error. Or maybe the replies in this thread are indicative of how society has become bereft of kindness, compassion and forgiveness.

I can never forgive him for the handball incident. I do however recognise his incredible talent. These maverick sports men that die early. Best, Maradona, Higgins (snooker) Ayrton Senna the list I'm sure is long, all with a gift and seemingly gone too soon. Anyone for Gazza going next?

He may have been a dickhead but he's the greatest player in my lifetime.
The documentary a few months back made for fantastic viewing. The way he was controlled by the mafia in Naples, you can see why he went off the rails. I certainly mellowed to him after watching that

Rest in Peace
As PP's have said, he basically signed for Stoke and then took us to 2 Premier League titles and the UEFA Cup
Huge, huge talent
Who is the GOAT is debatable, but you can't have the debate without Diego being worthy of serious consideration

He wasn't a drugs cheat. He enjoyed amphetamines. Totally different thing and how did it affect you that he was taking them. Led to his downfall, not yours. Good history is littered with people who didn't play by the rules to some degree and it wasn't the coke that made him play like that. If it was, I'm glad he took it. Role models are for people with no morals.

Why isn’t it possible to separate the two? Not to mention Messi being convicted of tax fraud.

An outstanding talent, you see some footballers and ask what all the fuss is about, not with DM. RIP Maradona. Posted it before (excuse the crap music - there's always the mute), but some of the skills are ridiculous.
I'll suppose I'll have to forgive the handball.

The best ever. No one else has ever been able to keep control of a ball under pressure like he did (Zidane maybe the closest in my lifetime). Won 2 Serie A, A UEFA cup and a world cup in teams that would have been absolutely nowhere without him.

Still to this day, I blame Peter Shilton for the hand of God goal. If the big pussy had done his job remotely close to how he should Maradonas hand would have been on the deck with the rest of his body.
