He wasn't a drugs cheat. He enjoyed amphetamines. Totally different thing and how did it affect you that he was taking them. Led to his downfall, not yours. Good history is littered with people who didn't play by the rules to some degree and it wasn't the coke that made him play like that. If it was, I'm glad he took it. Role models are for people with no morals.
Why the fuck was he so fat if he enjoyed amphets by the way they do affect performance. Coke's different. You can still eat well but it did affect his performace. He became worse the more he took it.

RIP
The Greatest I have seen. Had the pleasure of watching him at the age of 17. Footballing Genius.
Anybody who is naive enough to dismiss him as simply a cheat does not know Football.
He brought magic to the game.
I feel sorry for anyone who wouldn't be able to appreciate it.

Couldn’t agree more. It’s indicative of how our society has become morally bankrupt and bereft of true, honest role models when we have when a drugs cheat spoken of so fondly and glowingly like he was some friendly uncle who made a minor error.
He was banned for testing positive for ephedrine which is a performance enhancing stimulant as detailed by the World Anti Doping Agency, so I'm afraid he is indeed a drugs cheat. I’m not bothered about his downfall, but I don’t like cheats and doing it to this extent as it undermines sportsmanship and those who work damned hard just to compete on what is a supposedly level playing field.

I’m not sure how you can be a football fan and not pay due reverence and respect to one of the very few geniuses of the game. He was the best player of my time on the planet and is in a unique club of less than half a dozen players who come even close to the term genius.

How can he not be a drugs cheat if he enjoyed amphets Drug cheats take substances that give the muscles more energy and make blood cirulation more effective. I'm no doctor but there is a difference.

Anyone who cant appreciate Maradona as a genius footballer should just give up now. History is strewn with flawed geniuses. He's not the first or the last. Watching the film just reminded how truly amazing he was. I never saw anyone play the game to that level.

Most of his career he took drugs which were the very opposite of performance enhancing. He put loads of shit into his body which made his performances even more remarkable.

Fair point but he wasn't taking these in his prime, only when he started to go down hill which was probably due through the coke.

For me it wasn't the act of cheating that i cannot forgive him for, after all the ref and the liners must take some of the blame for that farce (how they thought a 5ft 4 stump could get above a 6ft goalkeeper and his hands without cheating is still beyond me), nope, it was him claiming it as the hand of god. That took being arrogant to another level.
He ruined a great day for me, I was down at Milton Keynes Bowl to see B.A.D. Dr & the Medics, lloyd Cole and the Waterboys. When Simple Minds came on a Kerr joked that England were already losing, so we said fuck you and left to find a pub with the match on. The rest was a massive downer. I haven't felt so sick about a football result since. People say they would have won anyway because he went on to score what i admit to being probably the best goal i have ever seen, but I maintain he wouldn't have scored that if he hadn't been gifted one four minutes earlier and therefore believed he was Jesus.

I'm no doctor but there is a difference. ..... back in the sixties & early seventies I think there were quite a few players who were taking them - maybe even given to them by the club doctor

As I've posted elsewhere, don't forget him giving it large at the last World Cup when Columbia scored against us. He had no time for England or the English.

I'm surprised at people saying Messi and Ronaldo would take his crown. Messi might be almost be as good, just doesnt have the mentality. Ronaldo might almost have the mentality but just isnt as good. Best player I've ever seen. And if Im honest, despite breaking my heart as a teenager, life is all richer for characters like him off the pitch. Legend in every way. Cheating tosser.
