For those who don’t realise how good he was ....he won the WC in 1986 with the equivalent of Charlton Athletic He was a magician with a football RIP Have Charlton ever been in the World Cup ! No but if maradona had signed for them they would have won it in 86 👍

The greatest my arse. Not even in the top 5, Ronaldo, Messi, Matthews and Pele above him easily, cheating wanker. Ronaldo still makes the top 5 despite your stringent ‘cheating wanker’ criteria I see...

What a sh*tty year..... The best player to lace on a pair of boots, imho. Strong as an ox,brazen, bullish, brilliant forging angles and opportunities that didn't seem to exist.Even when it came to cheating he was an iconoclast:not for Diego the sel-consciuous,apologetic sleight of hand of a shame faced Thierry Henry say,Maradona did it with confrontational braggadoco... A touch like Gazza after him, didn't possess the wisdom to surround himself with better people. That pic of him confroneed by a hist Belgium players must be one pf the most enduring football images I can recall. Flawed genius, football guerilla fighter, and yeah, something of a cheat, now raising a middle finger to FIFA from the heavens. RIP the greatest. 😢 Did they have a drugs testing programme when he played ? Yeah they asked him if his supply was any good and if so who could they buy Peruvian marching powder from

What I find amazing is that as good as he was, he probably never reached his full potential due to his "lifestyle"!

will never be forgiven for his hand of god and how he rubbed it in our faces including at the last worldcup or one before in Brazil maybe he was not a gentleman of the game like our Gordon was or Pele or countless other true greats i hope they do not attempt a minutes silence this weekend for the cheating shite hawk Couldn’t agree more. It’s indicative of how our society has become morally bankrupt and bereft of true, honest role models when we have when a drugs cheat spoken of so fondly and glowingly like he was some friendly uncle who made a minor error. Is it ‘indicative of a morally bankrupt society’ or is it just that it’s possible to marvel at the genius while deploring the excesses and the bad stuff?

Regardless of whether he was the greatest, the most skillful or the biggest cheat, he made generations of people sit up and take notice of just how beautiful, exciting and unpredictable football can be. Sport needs people like him every so often. RIP,Diego. A true legend.

I genuinely don't understand how anyone can argue that Messi, Ronaldo, anyone else is/are 'miles better'
Argument to be had who was the best - & the previous point re lack of footage about past greats is pertinent (how much footage is there of Matthews at his peak in the 30's?) of course & take on the disgust at the cheating & the drugs but for me there was no player better.
RIP

GOAT my arse. Just like Thierry Henry anyone who was prepared to cheat and brag about his cheating like he did can’t even be mentioned in the same breath as Sir Stan, Pele, Ronaldo, Messi etc. We often refer to Gordon Banks as the ‘great’ Gordon Banks and for me greatness needs to be measured by the man both on and off the field. Now by that measure, who is the greatest now?

Great yes....greatest no....and for me this image sums his "genius" up. Like Elvis when he was on his Vegas route and he was only going one way too "Say hello to my little friend!"

Superb and outrageously talented, drug fuelled, cheating footballer. To say he was the greatest of all time is certainly open to debate but on his day he was absolutely untouchable. He was certainly "one of the greatest" ever to play the game IMO. I was in Naples a couple of years ago and he still has godlike status and is revered with pictures of him everywhere in bars. RIP

Why isn’t it possible to separate the two?

Heart attack at 60 and a life abusing the beak. Almost certainly cocaine related, whether due to the historical abuse or current. I’m not sure how long ago it was, only a few years I think, I watched a video of him getting a baggie dropped off to him in the dugout. Troubled guy, but a genius.

Quite simply the greatest player that's ever walked the earth. RIP Diego x COVID still giving you hell then? As others have said he pretty much won the '86 World Cup on his own he was that good. In an era where players like him still had the living shit kicked out of them he was immense. I actually watched "Diego" again when I was in bed with Covid, fantastic watch.................
