I do think he would have kept us up ,but he still needed sacking but at the end of the season It's a sign of how bad things got that he didn't make it to the end of the season, Hughes wasn't solely to blame but we did seem to be going backwards in his final few seasons. |

Manager backs himself shocker. Thought it was a decent interview and coupled with the 'who else would do this job?' Quote points to things being pretty shitty behind the scenes. Rowett's subsequent comments seem to reflect this. I feel he was eventually sacked in a rush after Coventry as no one was lined up. From a strategic pov that was disastrous as time in the window was wasted.

The only way we would have stayed up is if he had been sacked before the season started. We could have possibly shown ambition by keeping Arnie and he would have been the difference. Anyway it’s all hindsight so we move on , rebuild and get promoted in May. It’s as easy as that

Plenty of issues above Hughes, but that squad should've been nowhere near relegation. There were easily 3 worse teams in the league.
The fact MH shat himself and refused to play football after one or two bad results completely ruined us as a club.
We were set up to play on the counter but with no defensive coaching.
We were set up to hoof to a front man with no mobile target man.
We were set up to have a mobile, buzzing midfield where only one of the players in midfield had legs.
We were set up to play with flying wing backs who overlap and deliver crosses, those two were Diouf and Pieters.
Prior to that, we set up to play counter attacking 4231 with fucking Joe Allen at number 10, while the only creative central player we have sits on a bench in Spain.
Fuck yourself Mark Hughes, this summer we should've been complaining about lack of quality investment and a poor 12th place finish. At worst, with the squad we had.
Because of you, we're talking about needing promotion again.

Although I think the most profoundly moronic thing anyone at the club could have done was to sack him at that exact point.
The window was our lifeline. The window was our saviour. Hughes needed to go at the end of November at the absolute latest to get a new guy in to decide who he wanted, or we needed to stick with Hughes and back him to see how he handled the window.
Exactly what we shouldn't have done, and exactly what we did, was sack him in the middle of the fucking window, wasting it completely, leaving those two gimboids to decide who we needed to sign and neglecting to bring in a bastard striker.
Although Hughes is a bell-wipe and it was his fault that we were in that situation in the first place, the arrogant, ill-disciplined, poorly-talented, procrastinating, excuse-making crust.

The issue was never sacking Hughes. The issue was about us having a replacement with good credentials to hit the ground running. We waited for 3 weeks and chose Lambert.
In hindsight would he have kept us up? With where we finished maybe just about. But it would have been papering over the cracks.....
