I wonder how old the OP is? I for one cant wait for this season to start. It's been a good 4/5 years since I've been this excited about an upcoming season. Year after year in the prem we scrambled for mid table finishes; its boring. God willing this season we can now mix it with the best in the league and actually have something to play for. The atmosphere at the stadia we will visit will be better and the feel good factor will hopefully return to the club.

I know one person is very happy being in the championship.
Nothing wrong with the process, just depends on what you want.
I'm pigsick at the thought of it though.

I have to get this off my chest. just being in this league is grim. last night's match was unwatchable. we have some horrible trip to Leeds a horrible place to visit followed by the mighty bees who will probably give us a lesson next Saturday. I hate everything about this league, it's utterly depressing and is @@@@ing me off. It's full of tin pot clubs with tin pot fans all who will be looking to get one over on us. and the CEO remains..... Arrogant insipid anti football rubbish.

Not sure why there's all this uproar? It is crap, it is of lower quality and that is not only demonstratable fact, it is literally the point of having a tiered league. There are tinpot clubs in this division. That's not to say there aren't in the Premier League either, but Reading, Wigan, Hull, Norwich? Fuck that for a laugh. I'm sure when the reality of half-empty stadiums and fuck all media coverage kicks in people will reverse this "Oh it's so jolly exciting" mentality. It's not exciting, everyone's the same level of wank. Yes, there are plenty of proper clubs here too (Derby, Forest, Wednesday, Preston, Leeds) who may arguably be bigger than us but they don't exactly set the pulse racing. People seem to forget that the point of football is to be the best you can be. The actual literal objective of the Championship is to get promoted out of it. If it's so good in the second tier, why bother trying to win promotion? Why not just aim for survival? In which case what's the point of it all? I tend to agree with most of your posts but I think you miss the point of the tirade. Most replies suggest it’s going to be a refreshing change to actually go out and try and win and hopefully use our “big fish in a small sea” situation, whether it’s founded or not,to our advantage. I’m excited about tomorrow,I hate Leeds with a passion and still bear the scars of going to school in the ‘70’s where 99% of my mates were Leeds even though they should have been ‘Udders fans. There’s massive clubs down there, you forgot the two Sheffield clubs....there’ll be great atmospheres and we may flourish again and rediscover our mojo.Whatever,it’s a new dawn but the old adage “it’s the hope that kills” still lurks in the dark recesses of my mind don’t you worry about that chief x

Football is as much about the journey to the top as it is about being there. So long as the club is looking forward and upward I'll be happy. Personally I feel pretty blessed that the side I support is in the top 44 in the country, because there are another 6000 odd clubs with fans who aren't so lucky as us. The very idea of complaining when your team is favourite to be Champions of the second highest division in the entire country is kind of sickening to me if I'm honest.

I wish this league had a few more 'tin pot' clubs, apart from the Big 6 in the Prem it reads far more like the great and the good of English football than the rest of the Prem does. The fixture list does not make for comfortable reading in any way shape or form. Yes there are more proper historic clubs in this league, with passionate supporters. The premier league is full of new money plastic clubs I have no respect for, like Bournemouth, Brighton for instance. Full respect to all the big clubs in this league, but really I'm sure we'd all rather be in the prem. Hopefully this is just a one season blip

Im like so excited. Always watched the lower league stuff during the ten years. Just love the honesty of the championship and efl etc. Loved the early years in the premier league but not when we became an also ran utterly depressingly moribund, so lets GO and win the championship and take premier league by storm next year!!!

……….and calling them "tin pot clubs" might even encourage them to want to get one over on us! This is the sort of arrogant shit that being in the "best league in the world" breeds ( remind me which league has won the Champions league the most over the last 10 years??) and it is so disrespectful to clubs with a great history such as Sheffield Wednesday and clubs that are BIGGER than us such as Villa.

Prior to last night, I must have unknowingly been consoling myself with memories of the Macari days.
Yes, reality certainly struck home last night whilst forcing myself to watch last night's game until the final whistle.
I sincerely hope that Messrs Coates and the rest of the club's management feel the same.
I'm a bit of a JCL actually, the first game I went to was in 1963. I mention that just to "head off" incoming smart arse replies.

The very idea of complaining when your team is favourite to be Champions of the second highest division in the entire country is kind of sickening to me if I'm honest. Definitely agree that it's about the journey rather than the destination because it just keeps going forever. My main issue is more that we've taken a backwards step, and an incredibly dangerous one too, because our future successes depend upon being able to rinse the TV money for all it's worth. We've sort of caught a break in that we've had some players commit when we weren't expecting them to, but be under no illusion that they'll be off next May if we don't get promoted, and then we're in a far trickier situation and with even less money to sort it out. You say that enjoyment is relative and to some extent I agree, but when we were in the third tier can you honestly say you didn't dream of being in the Premier League one day? Reaching an FA Cup Final, playing in Europe? Yes you can enjoy fucking Autoglass trophy wins and playoff victories but they didn't come close to the glitzy status of those other competitions. That's ultimately the crux of what I'm getting at. I'm not going to enjoy the season as much as I'd like because I will be shitting myself that we don't get promoted. This will be our best crack at it by far, and if we fail we could condemn ourselves to another 23 years or longer in the wilderness. I'd still have a season ticket. I'd still go away. But think of what that would do to your ambitions and expectations, you'd be dreaming, dreaming of a return to what has frankly been bread and butter for us for ten years. Give me a midtable Premier League scrap and a midtable Championship scrap and I know what I'd pick every single time. At least in the "boredom" of the Premier League you've got a squad with a fighting chance of winning the FA or League Cup as well, people tend not to think about that. There will be enjoyment to be had as there are in most seasons, it's certainly not the end of the world, but there's every chance it won't be a picnic in the sun, either. It's a fucking difficult league, and there's every chance we could get sucked into its suffocating grasp for years, so it needs to be treated with respect and caution. It doesn't mean it's not wank, because it it fucking dogshit, but that doesn't mean it's not tough and competitive.

Fairplay for giving such a thorough response, I'm really tired of people taking a differing opinion as some sort of personal attack. Anyways brown nosing you aside, I do think you make a fair point about how much our position hinges on finances. If we finish mid table this season it leaves the futures of so many of our players that have committed to give it a go with us in the air to say the least. While I don't disagree with much of what you said there, your initial point was really just lambasting the nature of the league itself. Concerns about our position with in it are much more valid, I really enjoy the Championship and being in it but the race against time of having to be promoted within x seasons because of parachute payments does make our situation a bit more precarious. I could enjoy watching football in any of the top four tiers, doesn't mean that's reflective of where I want us to be.

I’m looking forward to the season. The premier league was dross for us in recent years, too many tonkings off the big boys and poor starts every year giving us little chance of a decent season. It’ll be nice to be one of the favoured teams for a year or two, I hope we find our way back to the top tier of course but I intend to enjoy football again after a miserable few seasons.

Wigan are the quintessential wank club. Reading aren't far behind. Hull are up there. Norwich, Ipswich, all beige family clubs with no edge about them, no history. There are plenty of proper clubs too, and yes there are tinpot clubs in the Prem like Watford, but there's no reason to not call a shit club a shit club.
