As Bobby Martinez has shown, it's better to be lucky than good, I really hope Gareth is a lucky manager we can be bang avarage all tournament if it means we win it. So much so who'd bet against a Belgium - England Final?! Part 2 with actual first team squad members playing this time around!

I don't think it was tbh! Obviously it went in but only just and it should have been saved. They're all good if they go in - even Bryan Ruiz knows that. RLC was the obvious choice, Dier kills all momentum and he can't even foul properly. I disagree 😂 People used to say that about Walters and then he missed a load for the exact reasons I'd say they were shit. Bit different in this case mind but hopefully he doesn't have to take another one. Dier was bloody awful and really shouldn't be used again if we can help it.

I think a few people need to take a look at our abject failure since around the time Southgate was actually playing. That's how long we've been rotten. Look at the talent we wasted in the intervening 20 odd years under a variety of highly paid failures. Scandal after scandal, piss poor performances and no love for the badge. Give the bloke some credit for dragging us out of the footballing wilderness and in less than 2 years giving us something to cheer about. At 47 he's still learning his trade at this level but he has conducted himself immaculately in every situation in public. He's built his team on youth not experience. Committed to a style of play and picked on form not reputation. Pretty much united an entire country to care about national football again when some, me included, had thrown the towel in. We came into this tournament as a team for the Euros 2020 and we are still in it by the skin of our teeth while Germany, Argentina, Spain and Portugal are at home. You can't deny his passion for the badge he's tried to be progressive in his approach. England needed a plan and we have something to build on I think he has brought the FA kicking and screaming behind him. Whatever happens in this tournament he should be judged on a 4 year project. He deserves that after the cack that preceded him since about 1996. Great post. Southgate is a man with a plan, and it’s a long long time since we had that with England.

At least under Southgate you can see that the team looks to be proud to represent the country. It’s not his fault that we have zero creativity from our midfield and that only Pep can make Stirling look like a footballer. I think that given a choice between Dier and C. Adam you’d pick Adam every time because Dier lives up to his name, yet he scores the winning penalty? Southgate clearly has something about him at this level.

RLC was the obvious choice, Dier kills all momentum and he can't even foul properly. Can you begin to imagine the pressure on Eric Dier when he stepped up to take that penalty? My view, for what it's worth, is that those lads tonight deserve a medal! I have to say I thought they were done after the 1st half of extra time but they found a second wind from somewhere. The shit they had to put up with from the Colombians was ridiculous but for me, they thoroughly deserved the victory and to succeed in the penalty shoot out showed great courage and character. If there is any justice, Colombia should be retrospectively punished for their antics, e.g. disqualified from entry to the next World Cup. You only need to take such action once and I feel sure you would see fairer play being conducted going forward. That said, I still have the view that FIFA, and indeed all footballing governing bodies simply love controversy. It gets people talking and runs emotions high. Whatever they might claim, they are simply not interested in making sure that fair play prevails. Tonight, we got away with one because let's face it, if there was anything fair about football (even with VAR) Columbia would have had at least one man sent off tonight! Thankfully, the result went our way. Had Colombia won, I think you could once again suggest that the adages "Cheats never prosper" or even "Crime does not pay" are absolute bollocks - at least when it comes to football.

I like Southgate and am fully behind the bloke. However he got very lucky last night. His tactics nearly lost us the game. We were in full control, Colombia’s heads had gone and instead of killing them he changed it and weakened us. Rashford should have been on for sterling and loftus cheek for Ali. Colombia were wide open and were perfect to be picked off.

Not sure if the very low standard of football at the world cup counts as a plan? Maybe he is just lucky, but who doesn't want a lucky manager.

He is cool, calm and measured. He is proud to manage England and I for one as a disenchanted England fan thank him for his dedication and commitment to the team.
Would a Sam Allardyce England have prepared so well and come so far?

The thing is we have players who are yet to perform ala Lingard,Sterling, Ali and Rashford if they can get their heads together for the next two very winnable matches were in the final, it’s that easy.
As for our opposition in the final I can foresee France, who look very strong in the middle of the field, can we win it ??

After watching England over the years I would suggest one of the big differences is the fact that we have a young sqaud who are together and it would seem there are no clicks in the group and players calling the shots!

Jerusalem ["And did those feet in ancient time"] BY WILLIAM BLAKE
And did those feet in ancient time Walk upon Englands mountains green: And was the holy Lamb of God, On Englands pleasant pastures seen! And did the Countenance Divine, Shine forth upon our clouded hills? And was Jerusalem builded here, Among these dark Satanic Mills? Bring me my Bow of burning gold: Bring me my arrows of desire: Bring me my Spear: O clouds unfold! Bring me my Chariot of fire! I will not cease from Mental Fight, Nor shall my sword sleep in my hand: Till we have built Jerusalem, In Englands green & pleasant Land.
Source: Preface to Milton a Poem. (1810)
Do eeet for the lads and lassies!

Southgate is turning out to be the manager everyone wanted. From an FA perspective, he is one 'their men'; the press haven't yet decided to do a 'Gormless Gareth' hatchet job on him; the TV pundits like that he can string two sensible sentences together and the rest of us have a team that look like they are set up to do something.
...the caveat is that we have only beaten two poor teams, and while we may have won a penalty shoot-out for the first time at a world cup, we still haven't won a game in the knock-out stages of a competition since Agincourt. He isn't the messiah yet.

Whatever the rights of wrongs on who he picks and how we play he has achieved 2 things I can't remember for a very long time (possibly euro 96)
1 he has got a squad togetherness with no cliques
2 he has given us as England fans HOPE !

I knew the moment I saw him in a pizzeria in Harrogate in 2011 that he'd make a great England manager one day, even though I couldn't be arsed to speak to him.

His sub nearly cost us the game today. It was negative shite at it finest and isn't needed. Hopefully he learned. It so often happens when you put on a defensive midfielder to keep a one nil lead, He’s got away with one there like you say hope it’s lesson learned to keep the attacking pressure on

Just not sure we have the players to close the game down. Anyway, except for a few errors, Southgate is pretty much doing the best he can with what we've got. However, Vardy is almost totally ineffective and was fucked after only coming on late in the game.

Had a groin strain and is a doubt for Saturday, he was due to take the 5th penalty but declined saying he wasn't fit enough that's why Dier took it.

A nation united under the banner of three lions. The national team taking us into spring after a long winter of failures. Finally we can embrace our team. The team we all share. Then Bayern still finds something to whinge about.

There's plenty to whinge about. The biggest being we look toothless in open play. Kane had his best game ever in an England shirt last night though I thought. It was a proper centre forwards display.

Southgate is showing some balls with his decisions and he is not pandering to the armchair experts back here. I was absolutely bricking myself when Rashford stepped up. I thought it was a massive gamble, but it worked.
He's getting a little of the luck that has deserted us in the past. Their fourth penalty was the big slice we needed.

Just when you think even the person who moans about fucking everything couldn't moan at England winning a World Cup game...
Well done on your winning penalty Eric to put your nation through to the next round, but next time can you improve your technique as Bayern wasn't very happy with it. Never heard someone chat so much shit in my entire life.
