Apologies Fish. From the January that saw Shelvey etc arrive there was £76m(ish) spent by Ashley. It was poor English by me. I meanhave the money Ashley had given not Rafa had spent. Still a shit load of money. Ah, no worries. Yeah, we've spent a bit. Benitez is paying for the legacy of a broken transfer policy, hence the rather modest transfer spend this time round. £36m isn't a lot for a newly promoted side to spend, certainly not one with the financial muscle that we should be flexing. Put it this way, we had a £33m surplus after last summer's transfer business (£57m spent, £90m recouped...thanks Mr Levy), we spent nothing in January, made £17.5m this summer. We're not spending beyond our means, in fact by rights, Ashley should have loosened the purse strings a bit to permit Benitez to sign the players he thinks we need to cement safety. Even then, Benitez was identifying players like Willy Caballero, Tammy Abraham, Kenedy. None of those would exactly break the bank, but our inept directors couldn't even get that done. Mark my words, if we're in the relegation fight come January, Ashley will have to spend money to keep us up, and it will cost a lot more then than it would have done now (or January 2017, which should have been the plan).

So fish what is the feeling on Benitez and his constant threats to walk out? Good manager but he is a bit annoying with his constant moaning about lack of funds. Just get on with it and coach your team I say

With Fletcher as captain for Ryan he will be making us disciplined, we've got a good chance for all three points I feel. I'd be happy with a draw.

I think Stoke will be more expansive, more attacking than you are expecting I hope you do try and stretch the game, it'll make for a more interesting game. Have you been aiming for expansive football thus far? All I've seen is highlights and (mostly because of the opposition) you've not looked like an expansive team. If that's the case I'd expect you to have plenty of possession in your own half, and we'll aim to draw you out to hit you on the counter. Not a lighting fast striker charging into space left behind the back line, but an attack that tries to create an opportunity before your defence have reorganised. If, as I expect it will be, it's two teams happy enough permitting the opposition to have unthreatening possession, it'll be a bit of a stalemate. Settled, if at all, by a moment of quality, a set piece or a calamitous error. Well we have had some defending to do of course. At Everton although we were pretty toothless we did take the game to Everton. Even last week, despite what Jose said,no bus parking, attacked when we could. With three at the back danger is it ends up being a back five + two midfielders who stay back however I don't expect that most weeks. We won't be going gung ho but Shaqiri and pals will try to prove and stretch Newcastle.

Very naive as he is still better than any of our strikers I don't rate Joselu. I don't think he will cause us any problems. That's one of those comments that is likely to come back and haunt you

I can't even remember the last time Stoke lost a game. Our defence is absolutely impenetrable. No chance we're gonna get any bad injuries this season. Joselu is shite and our defence is absolutely guaranteed to keep a clean sheet, no chance does he get a goal.

I think that we are better than them. I hate Newcastle and their 'superior' fan base. Please can we pork them stupid. I work with a Toon fan and he is a shithead.

Looks like the new lads are doing their initiations tonight, going off Berahino's insta. Looks a good craic. Think Souta will be on the bench tomorrow

I'd definitely take a draw now if one was on offer . We are in a run of games where 1 point is very valuable until we get to Bournemouth at home and then the run to Xmas .

So pretty much the first half of the seasons fixtures then? We need 5 or 6 wins by the turn of the year so 4 from games 8 -12 Is perfectly logical given the first 8'

The blood will be pumping from the 1st minute so we will be up for it. It will certainty be a hard pulsating one for the entire 90mins. I'm guessing it will be better than the semi we had against Bolton when we gave them a good pounding.

Not the walk in the park some are suggesting. We'll do well to take anything from here. Newcastle will be in a positive mood, at home with joselu proving his worth. I expect a tough afternoon.
