Simple interpretation: We're playing 3 CBs and need to have 4 decent CBs to provide cover Oatcake Interpretation: Shawcross is in fact an alien who has impregnated Marc Muniesa as part of a master plan to take over the world in the form of diminutive Spanish defenders. Mark Hughes, part time Agent of Shield, has found out about the plan, has already shipped off Muniesa (now in the first bloom of pregnancy and a little weepy) and is looking to loan Shawcross to the Saturnalian Sentinels (currently based on the moon Titan while their home ground is extended) with a buy out clause of 1 million zinconblats. Isn't the interpretation more to do with our captain not having signed, or allegedly even shown, a new contract going into the last year of his current deal? The key word being allegedly.

I'm not putting all the blame on Stoke, but there clearly is 'a situation' www.dailystar.co.uk/sport/football/632424/Stoke-transfer-news-Ryan-Shawcross-new-contract"I spoke to Tony Scholes (CEO) at the end of last season and since then we've not spoken again. “But I've got another year so there's no massive rush. I'm here for another season so that's where we are at.” He added: "It's up to the club. I have a year left and I can only comment on what I've got.“If they want to make it longer then I'll be delighted. I've had a great time so far and I want that to continue. But there's got to be a contract there to me sign."
www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2017/08/23/football-transfer-news-rumours-former-dortmund-boss-thomas-tuchel/Ryan Shawcross is in the dark over his future after Stoke’s failure to open talks over a new contract. Shawcross has completed a decade of service in the Potteries but his current deal runs out next summer and negotiations are yet to start. Stoke insist they will begin contract talks soon but Shawcross is bemused by the delay and could leave next year as a free agent. Stoke are hoping to move out record £18 million signing Giannelli Imbula, Bojan and Philipp Wollscheid before the deadline

Fair enough. But if we were trying to offload him as the conspiracy theorists would have us believe, Shirley it would be in our interests to have extended his contract so we could get better money for him thus avoiding a N'zonzi scenario. I'm not denying there does appear to be a 'situation' I was arguing against the 2+2=5ers who see our interest in Wimmer and Engels spelling the end for Shawcross as opposed to simply a replacement for Wolly. I would be absolutely amazed if we hadn't even broached the contract issue with Ryan (bearing in mind the shit they got over zonz) but I accept this is Stoke City we're talking about. So they could all be right after all. 😢

I assume the initial talks between Scholes and Ryan resulted in a difference between what we want and he wants so maybe they decided to want until window shuts to negotiate as not being offered a contract is less of a story than him turning an offer down and won't alert other clubs to make offers.

He wants more money , we think we can get a better player for the same money. I don't particularly agree but if we wanted to offer him a new contract why the hell wouldn't we be talking to him.

The only thing I can think of is the length of contract on offer , this will be his last big contract and as a 30 year old ( in a month or so ) he will be looking for a 5 year deal , something the club may not want to offer .

I know you like permanent deals, rather than loans Bayern. But to call Zouma "A shite loanee from Chelsea" was a little silly. Another classic from your collection.😉...........😀 I wonder if Bayern called Shawcross "a shite loanee from Man U" when TP first signed him on loan ten years ago? It was probably whooooo? Like most people were.

Eh? I've never said that. I wouldn't play him because we don't own him, I've never bought his quality into it. You said Ryan is our best defender. That is questioning Zouma's ability if you ask me. "He's the best defender we own still though."

Rayn is very special to a lot of us as he has remained faithful to the club for almost 10 years! Today this is very rare and I must say I, and many of us, regard him as a very special player because of this. Such players should be rewarded with new contracts as long as they can be a vital part of the squad. In Ryan's case he is still only 29 and also still good enough to be one of the first names on the team sheet every week. When people write/wrote him off earlier in the season I think it's a lack of understanding of how vital such players are to a club like Stoke. Hopefully we will see him in our red and white stripes for at least another 4-5 years!

Now, if you want to spin that into "players we own" to dig yourself out of a hole that's fine although you most definitely included Zouma in that when you made the original comment because I took issue with you on it.

Christ, I can't remember what I did 10 minutes ago! I would in a back 4 though play Shawcross and BMI because they're a fantastic partnership over him. But also as I've said I'd play him in midfield in that situation.
