Unless he doesn't want to sign (which I'd be surprised and very disappointed about) I hope we aren't being overly complacent.
Just get him fucking signed up for Christ's sake!

It's all very worrying. I'd let any other player at the club leave before letting Ryan go.

Hard to tell but this is as likely to be Ryan's people playing hardball as anything else. There are likely to be a raft of bottom half PL clubs who would have an interest in such an experienced no-nonsense defender and as such they are going to be going all out for a big contract for their lad at such a significant time of his career. Ryan's an absolute club hero but in the end he's as subject to the usual modern day player demands as any other.

If for what ever reason he does not sign, he will walk with a free transfer next summer.
We cant sell him this summer as we don't have another centre half in the club other than the fool from Germany.
He is in the box seat to negotiate very hard because as stated on a previous thread he has plenty of admirers and we have no centre halves.

He is in the box seat to negotiate very hard because as stated on a previous thread he has plenty of admirers and we have no centre halves. I would hope we make him a perfectly reasonable offer given his years of service. If he doesn't sign, I really wouldn't want him to wind his time down with us and go for nothing. We'd have to take what we could. It all needs to be done quickly in order for us to get a replacement in (Maguire?). My feelings about Ryan are getting more ambivalent as each month passes. I'll happily see him remain, but wouldn't be distraught if he left as I think his best days are done. It's my personal opinion. As a member of the old guard his departure would be a wrench and of the other candidates who may be on their way (Whelan, Walters, Adam), the absence of our long-serving skipper would a be a tough one to take, but change is inevitable, it's just a matter of when.

it probably has less to do with money and more about contract length for both parties, I would imagine Ryan wants a longer contract to keep him safe into his mid thirties on a decent wage where as the club probably want a shorter contract. just offer the man what he wants.

Once again you've fucked up the quote function Jimmy. It really isn't that difficult mate! Differing opinions on Erik and Walters and fine. Both are crap and great in equal measure. Ryan, however, is an infinitely superior player to both and his qualities are evident to anyone with half a brain cell. A club like Stoke City cannot afford to be losing a player like Ryan Shawcross to a sideways move where we don't secure the transfer fee that his ability demands.

I'm having a bad day on the keyboard mate! We could have saved ourselves this angst and anguish by tying Ryan down a season earlier though. Who knows what we're offering or what he's asking for. If the worst happens, no-one will come out of this very well.

Ryan is a club legend, but anyone who doesn't think his best days are behind him is kidding himself. That bad back is looking fragile and a real hindrance to his ability to play at his best, and will probably only become more of an issue with each passing season.
Yes, I want him to stay, but he is not a "highest earner on a five year deal" material anymore. I hope a compromise can be found, as watching him play for another team now would be hard. Nevertheless, all players have their sell by date though, and his looks to be getting closer all the time. I just hope that, when such time comes, we deal with him with the respect his 10 years of wonderful service so richly deserves.

The problem Jezza is that his imperious form is taken for granted by so many. If another player plays OK, he gets 6/7 out of 10. If Ryan plays OK he get a 4/5 out of 10 and people say he's not the player he was. If another player plays well, he gets an 8/9 out of 10 whereas Ryan gets a 7. His imperious performances were taken as a given. Bruno is a fine example of that. He's been good and I like him but Ryan has been far superior to him across the course of a whole season yet people are falling over themselves to bash the club because Bruno hasn't signed yet whilst supporters had him in the running for POY. Those same people claim Ryan's powers are waning and that he would be no loss to the team. It is ridiculous. Stories of his demise are massively exaggerated. He's as important to us now as he's ever been, possibly even more so than ever. I hope he signs and signs quickly. His time to depart is at least another 3-4 years away.

Less than his imperious best is still bloody good and far better than the highly rated Bruno Martins Indi. He's still turned in some outstanding performances through the season where he's looked every inch as good as he's ever been. Like the rest of the team, he's turned in some uncharacteristically poor performances as well. I'm merely stating that Shawcross is seeming judged with higher expectation than other players as his outstanding performances have been taken for granted somewhat. How else do you explain that he doesn't have a single Player of the Year award to his name during our time in the Premier League?

The problem with even contemplating a Shawcross departure is the fact that we currently have no good defenders under contract apart from him, and pre-season starts in a month.
I get the argument he isn't the quite the absolute colossus he's been for much of our time in the Prem and, under normal circumstances, you could mount some kind of argument for a sale this summer if what he was asking for was hefty in terms of years or salary, but in these circumstances, it'd be a hell of a call.
You'd have to be more convinced than I am that he's in steep decline to leave yourselves open like that - but hard to know what the real story is without knowing what his agent is asking for.
If he's asking for some match-the-highest-earner clause (which he may or may not have at the moment) or another 4 or 5-yr deal, you could well understand some hesitation.
Fiddly one, and could be an interesting call if we are offered £7-8m for him in this situation and face the prospect of him walking next summer if he's disgruntled

I like Ryan , he is a good player
But for me the sensible concern about arnie not signing last year , ryan this year etc comes from hughes not playing our best young players
if he had players like sobhi , ngoy , Sweeney , verlinden Edwards etc playing in the league cup and some of them of (say 3 on the bench ) comming on when we go two nil down in the prem we might know if they are any good not .
Say we go two nil down in the prem and hughes puts on sobhi and Edwards ... what harm can it do ? we are already two nil down ...they are not going to be undoing the good work of the senior players and making us lose ... as its not happening and one or two of them need subbing off anyway .

It seems by no means certain, at this stage, that he will still be at the club when the season kicks off in August.

Really hope Bruno signs and that Ryan is staying as I think we finally have a pairing that is good enough for this league. In addition we need fullbacks who can do their jobs as well. I'm OK with Bards on the right side, but not Johnson who I think had a very ordinary season. Eric made too many silly mistakes this season so an upgrade in that position is certainly needed too.

To start the new season minus one Club legend would be understandable.
To start minus two Club legends would be questionable.
To start minus two Club legends and the most important player in our recent history would be relegatable.

It was about as useful as last month's Conservative election manifesto. Yeah. Clearly has nothing to say on the subject of note which is worrying. I think most clubs would worry if their captain was entering his final year with apparently no immediate desire to put pen to paper. It'll be interesting to see what would happen if we got a decent offer. Can't really see how we could afford to let him go under any circumstances with zero decent defenders on the books.
